Is Ferdinand international career over?

After Cahill was ruled out of the Euro 2012, the natural replacement will be Ferdinand. However, Hodgson opt to call up Martin Kelly instead. While Hodgson had given "footballing reasons" for the snub, many have suspected that it is due to the on-going racist lawsuit with his younger brother, Anton. I tend to follow this line as I cannot fathom why would a manager opt for a young inexperience player for a big tournament, especially when the other senior defender, Terry, is standing on only one good leg. So, do you think the international career of Rio is over?

I actually do think so. I think as long as Roy is around, Rio's playing now looks very bleak. His not getting selected when Cahill got injured was a clear statement towards this. Of course, I think if England does miserably at the Euros, Roy would be replaced, but whoever follows him probably will still look for young legs rather then going back to Rio. So I do think this might be the end of the road for Rio. Cheers! Ram

It had seemed that way until Mr Hodgson texted Ferdinand to say that Ferdinand is still in his plan for the World Cup qualifying rounds. It seems to me that Mr Hodgson is bold but not decisive. The way he does will just hurt people deeper. I don't think Ferdinand should ever accept any call up again from Mr Hodgson for dignity reasons. Ferdinand should just announce his international retirement for non-footballing reasons.

I think the texting was more intended to reduce the impact of the gaffe of not selecting him for "Footballing Reasons" :). I am not convinced that Ferdinand is in his plans, until John Terry, Cahill and Lescott are all injured. Cheers! Ram

To lessen the impact by texting an insincere promise? I really can't see the logic of not selecting Ferdinand for a major tournament and yet still having him in Mr Hodgson's FUTURE plans. Mr Hodgson should just tell the world that Ferdinand is not his kind of player. We can accept that as he is the boss and he takes responsibility for his decisions. And England does have a few capable centre backs to choose from. I just feel that Mr Hodgson should have handled that announcement more diplomatically and truthfully.

It's hard to say whether Rio Ferdinand's international career is over; we can only wait. However, based on the way his agent was reported to have criticized Roy Hodgson for not considering Ferdinand as a replacement for the injured Cahill, we can say categorically that Rio Ferdinand is still interested in international assignment. One feels it's not write to speculate why Ferdinand was left out of England's squad for the Euro 2012 tournament. However, it's obvious that Ferdinand is aging and he is no longer at his best. Yes, age may mean maturity and valuable experience, but no player may play at high level for twenty years! How do we access the experience of a young player? How can a young player gain valuable experience if he is not given the opportunity to play at high level? Hodgson have his reasons for over-looking Ferdinand and, one feels, we should respect this. Remember, Hodgson will bear the consequence of the success or otherwise of England at the end of the day. I do not belong to the school of thought that assumes that the manager "snubbed" Ferdinand. Moreover, one does not see any connection between the racist law suit that involves Rio Ferdinand's brother, Anton and the non-selection of Rio Ferdinand.

I think that it is especially after the critisism his reprentative has given to Roy Hodgson. It did seem a strange decision to bring Kelly in though especially as he is a full back.

Rio Ferdinand is disappointed - Rio Ferdinand is disappointed for not being selected in The England squad to play in Euro 2012.
'Footballing reasons' my f.o.o.t! The reason that Hodgson used was still presentable when he announced his squad. But when Cahill was injured and he took in Kelly instead of Ferdinand, I lost my respect for the new England manager. Hodgson was decisive in not even including Ferdinand in the squad. He could have got Ferdinand in but not played him (Jagielka and Kelly won't expect to play). Terry and Cahill were his preferred centre back partnerships with Lescott as cover. With Jagielka and Jones in reserve, Hodgson could feel that he does not need Ferdinand. That is footballing reason. But when he took Kelly, it is obvious that it was more than football in his mind when he omitted Ferdinand. You don't take passengers and apprentices to a major tournament. You go there to win with the best players you can have. Kelly is not even a centre back. It would have made more sense if he took an extra striker to replace Cahill. The joke is that Hodgson still insists that Ferdinand is still very much in his mind in the coming World Cup qualifying matches. Again, it is for footballing reasons, I suppose.

The rationale of Hodgson not picking Ferdinand is pointing to the rift between Ferdinand and John Terry. Not picking Ferdinand might Hodgson un-doing. The importance of experience in competition like cannot be over-emphasized. Cahill space I believe should to Rio but since Hodgson is the boss, he thinks he know the job, we see how his decision will pay. However, I know that Rio form has dropped also as Manchester United are telling to slash his salary if he will stay in the club, but not withstanding, he see him better than Martin Kelly. Martin Kelly should be called when all necessary options have been exhausted. I still do not think that Ferdinand international career is over. Since English FA sometimes are not patient enough with coaches to deliver, Anton might be called up another coach if Hodgson do not deliver and a new man is brought to take the mantle. I believe Rio still has future internationally in his career
