Are you scared of the unknown?

We don't like what we don't understand. In fact, it scares us. –Villagers (Beauty and the Beast) True, isn't it? I was discussing this concept to my class earlier and after my class, I saw this line on Twitter immediately after that class. I was surprised because it seemed like a perfect coincidence. Many of us are afraid of the unknown. Many of us do not like what we do not understand. For example, the use of computers. Many who do not know how to use the computer and thus, do not also know the benefits of using computers, would definitely react negatively when their workplace would require the use of such. This is our experience in our workplace. When we were required to use computerized class records, many of the "senior" professors reacted "violently" and said that they preferred the manual system - yes, traditional system. In fact, during the orientation for the new system, many did not attend. Their very reason was that, they will stick to the old system. Others said, they do not know how to use the computer anyway so it's useless attending the orientation. Are you not comfortable with what you do not understand too? To some extent, are you scared of the unknown?

The unknown things in life make life interesting!! If I knew everything life would be boring and there would be nothing to discover. Some things are scary but that is just human nature. :)

It depends on what is the unknown about. If it is related to something like learning new things and broadening my knowledge, my answer is no. In fact I find it challenging to know the things which I still do not know. For example I don't limit my knowledge on the basic things about computer. My profession is not about computer but I always try to enhance my knowledge with it whenever it is possible for me. The reason why is I'd like to solve it on my own if it is within my capabilities. The example you gave only showed their resistance to learn new things because yes, they are so scared or not open to changes, doubtful about their ability to understand the new system. We sometimes get afraid because we do not have a deep understanding of the matter but if we gain knowledge we can lessen that feeling. Bomb squad are not as afraid as other people because they know what to do with the bomb and how to deactivate it.. so the key to avoid the feeling of being scared to the unknown is to gain knowledge. Yes sometimes I am scared of the unknown but if it is about learning, I am not.
