It is a common thing to name streets, Roads and localities to name after great heroes of the past or National leaders of the Country through out the World!
This is basically done as a mark of respect and to remember those heroes forever in day to day lives of ours!
There is no need to say anything about Mahatma Gandhi as he remains a very well known figure throughout the World and his role in getting freedom for India is known to every one. His Non Violence and non co-operation movement has gained international acclaim today!
In India we have got many streets and Roads named after this great leader who is the Father of the Nation. We will find at least One Road named after this great leader in many big cities of India. Thus Mahatma Gandhi Road remains a popular road in almost all big cities of India. That is a nice thing and I appreciate this effort by the Government to remember this great leader!
But I feel very irritated and dejected when I see that the name of these Roads have been abbreviated to MG Road in almost all big cities! Nobody call these Roads as Mahatma Gandhi Road, instead they all call these roads as MG roads!
It is unfortunate to see the name of these roads as MG roads officially at many places. For that matter we have a Metro Railway station by name MG Road!
What is your take on such abbreviated names of the famous leaders used in our daily lives who has shed their blood for the country? Your opinion will be highly appreciated! Thanks !

Hullo Sir!
I am quite happy seeing the names of great elders like this. We do not refer to Mahatma Gandhi as Mr.MG. I am happy that his name is being remembered like this; it does not matter to me whether it is abbreviated or not.
I feel an indescribable sense of pride when I see such leaders’ names on important name boards and landmarks.

It happens anywhere I guess. Indonesia also names big roads in cities with past hero names. Luckily for us, none of them are abbreviated. If their names are too long, usually we just say the last name. Like: Panglima Besar Sudirman, we would say: PB Sudirman.
I understand your frustration...

In due respect with Mahatma Gandhi, the name is not too long to be abbreviated.
But- one of the famous road here in our country is also named from one great person and the name is too long to be pronounced if someone ask about it.
So, everyone decided to use acronym EDSA which measn
"Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue "

I really think that it is just saving money by putting a couple of letters on a sign other than an entire name. Of course, there could be a debate about whether or not using the names of famous people is a good idea. Perhaps if the place is respectable enough and does them credit then yes and it is just more memorable and easier to remember than some generic name.
Of course, there are just times where it is a lot easier for some people to remember the abbreviation than it is to remember the entire name. The same thing happens with Martin Luther King here in the United States in some areas, where its basically MLK this and MLK that. And sadly, some of the MLK places are not in the most respectable parts of town. But sadly what are you going to do?
