Famous monuments around the world

I love online geography games where you have to find countries and capitals on a map. One of my favourite games is a game where you get a picture of a famous monument and then you have to click on the location on the map. I was able to find most of the monuments in Asia, but I didn’t recognize the bridge between Denmark and Sweden That is quite funny - I have seen the bridge in person, but I haven’t been to Asia yet. The game inspired to me look up some information about the famous monuments around the world, because there were several monuments in Africa and South Africa that I didn’t recognize.
What are the names of the famous monuments in your country? Did you visit them? Or would you like to visit them? If you had the chance to visit one monument in your own country and one monument in another country which monuments would you choose and why?

hello porcospino! this is a very interesting question...in this country, (usa) i would like to visit mount rushmore as it is in a part of the country where we have recently moved and it is featured quite prominently in one of my favorite films by alfred hitchcock, north by northwest...in another country, i know this is probably very ordinary, but i would like to visit paris and the eiffel tower!

I have seen pictures of Mount Rushmore. I think that it could be an interesting place to visit in person and I would include it in my US itinerary when I get the chance to visit the US. Unfortunately that isn't going to happen in the near future. I don't think that I have seen the Hitchcock film that you mentioned, what is the name of the film?
I have to been to Paris a couple of time and one of the first things that I visited in Paris was the Eiffel tower. I enjoyed the view from the top of the building and I took many pictures. This year I am going to visit the Eiffel again. When we return from Asia my husband are going to fly from Ho Chi Minh city to Paris and we have decided to spend one day in Paris before we return to Denmark. My husband has never visted the Eiffel tower, and he wants to visit if while we are in Paris.

I have travelled to many countries and all of them were package holidays.
The tour conductors do include a few monuments that one should see, like the Statue of Liberty in the US, The Windmills in Amsterdam, The Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, The Eiffel Tower in France, The Maneke Pis in Belgium (lol), The mini Holland in Rotterdam, ....and many many more.
How can I forget the Taj Mahal in my very own country!

This topic is all about monuments but I cannot resist telling you how exciting it is to just be there in any country for that matter and feel the soil of that place. I even picked up a mere sea shell from the Pacific ocean when I was on a cruise of the Bahamas with the Sovereign of the Seas - a fantastic memory and each time I look at the shell I go back there in the white sands along with my fellow travellers - as I said always a package tour.

In every country there are some places that you "must" see like the Eiffel tower in Paris or the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I don't usually buy a package tour, but I try to find some information about the famous places online and then I make my own itinerary. I might buy package tour to India, because it is easier than getting a visa as an individual traveler, and I would be able to visit Taj Mahal and some of the other places that I have only heard about or seen on pictures.
I have the same feelings as you when I visit another country. I think it is really exciting to visit another country and I think that any country has something to offer. It makes me really happy to explore a new place. On a packtage tour you have the chance to explore the another country with new friends and I think that it is great. I met one of my close friend on a package tour and we have been friends for 14 years. On the other hand I love the freedom that I have when I plan my own trips and I able to do the things that I want and I choose how how many days I want to spend at each place.

I prefer package tours because they take care of the nitty gritty - all the documents that are required, looking after us at the airports, clearing our luggage, putting us up in 5 star hotels. They do give us time to do our own thing. When I was holidaying in Australia for example some of us decided to skip the Great Ocean Road as it was tiring after having covered the penguin the previous day. We watched a movie in the room, had a luxurious bath, combed Melbourne by trams, did our shopping, ate at those cheap counters where one can pick anything under the sun but must not share with another and such funny things. I even wanted a horse carriage ride but somehow could not manage.

I want to visit Portugal! My husband has been to Portugal, and he told me that your country is beautful and interesting. I hope that we will get the chance to visit Portugal together one day. I would like to visit Madrid and Barcelona in Spain and visit some places in Portugal on the same trip. I looked up the places that you mentioned and both places look very beautiful.

I also adore online geography games like naming countries, locating countries and naming capital cities. I have a few listed on my laptop as favorites that I go on quite regularly. I know you are excited about your planned trip to Asia that you will go on later this year. It is lovely to know you are matching names to Asia's monuments. It was so funny when you didn't recognize a bridge between Denmark and Sweden.
If I had the chance to visit a monument in my home country I would choose Hadrian's Wall in the north of my home country. If I had to chance to visit a monument in another country it would have to be the Great Wall of China. Then I could compare and contrast both of these.
In my home country the most famous monuments Stone Henge which I haven't yet been to, Avebury Stone Circle which I have visited, Dover Castle on the White Cliffs of Dover, Deal Castle overlooking the beach, the Roman Walls in Chester and Hadrian's Wall which I have already mentioned.

I also play geography games regularly, and I think it is a great way to learn more about the different countries and their capitals and I have improved my knowledge about the different countries since I discovered the geography games. I like the ones where you have to place the countries on a map like a jigsaw puzzle, but the other games are interesting as well.
I have heard about Hadrian's Wall, but I have never been there. My husband's wants to visit Stonehedge when we go to the UK. The White Cliffs of Dover also sounds like an intesting place to visit. It is pity that we need a visa to get into China. I would like to include a visit to Beijing and the Great Wall of China in my trip to Asia, but I have decided to visit other first countries because I can visit them without a visa.

hi maximax8! i have always wanted to visit hadrian's wall as well..and i saw an interview with one of my favorite musicians sting whenever he released his christmas album a few years ago...he was in his home town, near hadrian's wall, and walked around and discussed his memories on the programme and sang in the pub and the church! i also have always been fascinated by stonehenge and my father-in-law and brother-in-law got to visit there a few summers ago, i wish we could have gone with them! they did bring us back some cool stonehenge t-shirts, however.

I love monuments, specially those big ones as they are key landmarks in any given city. Just breathtaking, the monuments themselves tells of a great history about it. If I had the money, I'd love to go to those famous monuments all over the world. We don't have such big monuments of landmarks like the big countries, but we do have a few of our own. We have the Rizal monument up north, The huge rock sculpture lion monument on the way to Baguio City which is one of my favorite huge monument and a few more all over the country. I haven't even seen our own monuments here. I wish. Our country is an archipelago of islands and its not that easy just to hop from one island to another. It's costly. hehehe.

Yes I have heard a lot about that little mermaid. I've seen it in some movies, it must be a wonderful place to visit. Yes you will love it here, and with the paychecks you get there in your country it should be cheap for you to go island hopping. I'm from Cebu, look me up when you plan to visit our nice little city. I'd be glad to show you and your husband around sometime.

I also love monuments and there are a lot of famous monuments around the world that I would like to visit Unfortunately I don't have the money to visit all of the places that I am interested in. It was interesting to hear about the monuments from the Philippines that you mentioned. I can imagine that it is expensive to go from island to island, that it is pity, I would love to go island hopping the Philippines one day. I want to visit Cebu, Bohol and some of the other places that I have heard about, but I also think that it could be interesting to visit some of the small and less wellknown islands. In my country we don't have many monuments or landmarks, but I have seen some of the monuments in Copenhagen like the little mermaid.

Pay checks in country are my high, but unfortunately the daily living expenses (food, transportation etc) are also high, and because of that the money that I am able to save up for travelling is limited. I haven't given up the idea of visiting Asia, but it will take me several years to save up for my trips. Thanks, I will let you know when we will get the chance to visit the Philippines We want to combine it will a trip to Malaysia and Indonesia and we plan on flying from Indonesia to Cebu. It is not going to happen in near future, but I think that it will be possible one day.

For some reason I'm convinced I've seen the bridge but I can't think of when. Except maybe from a plane? I suppose I might have seen it when flying from Trondheim to Copenhagen.
Not quite sure what'd be the most famous monuments in Norway. There's the stave churches, I've seen only one and it is not as splendid as the big ones. I'd love to see them though. Then there's the National Monument in Oslo, which I had never heard about before walking straight into it with a group of friends :-)
I haven't seen the new opera house in Oslo yet, I'll probably go there in August. I've seen the Nidaros cathedral, biggest Medieval stone building in the Nordic country. As I can see it from the kitchen window it would have been a bit weird if I hadn't noticed it :-)
I'm sure there must be some other monuments here. Roads and bridges at least, although the last years we've been building mainly tunnels and they're not as impressive to look at!

I have never seen a stave church in person, I have only seen them on pictures. My husband visited Norway before we met and he saw some of the stave churches during his trip. I want to visit Oslo one day. The ferry from the north of Denmark is not close to my home as I live in south of Denmark, but I still think that it would be nice to catch the ferry from Hirtshals to Oslo one day. I have been to Norway, but I visited Bergen, and I have never been to Oslo. In which part of Norway is the Nidaros cathedral? (north/south etc) My husband and I have talked about going on a roadtrip in Norway and Sweden one day. A trip like that is my husband's big dream.

Nidaros cathedral is in Trondheim (but the church treasures are still in Denmark I believe, you scoundrels :-) ), so about one third to the north. 7-8 hours of driving from Oslo if you don't drive too fast and get horribly expensieve fines ;-)
I think there's a big stave church at Maihaugen open door museum in Oslo. I've never been there, never really been a tourist in Oslo 'cause I don't really like the place. Not quite sure how to say it in English, but it is a "stor by" but not a "storby". A big city but not a metropol? Hmm. It's just very spread out but doesn't have the things I want in a big city.
I'd like to drive through Norway and Sweden myself. I think that if you do it, you'd need some weeks. Then you could drive up through Norway, possibly do parts of the west and then go to Lofoten, cross the border up in the north and see Northern Sweden. I think the inner parts of middle Sweden is mainly spruce forest but the southern parts around the lakes are really nice. Been there once, would like to go back at some point.

Yes, I think that the games are interesting and they are a good way to learn more about the monuments around the world while we are having fun. I recognized the pictures of some of the monuments, but there were also a lot of monuments that I had never seen before, so I learned something new. I hope that I will get the chance to visit China one day. I am probably going to take a package tour, because it is easier than getting a visa as an individual traveller. Actually I have already found the package tour that I am interested in, but I don't have the money for it yet, I will have to wait.

As I have told you before I was ill when I visited Greece so I didn't manage to visit all of the places that I wanted to visit, but maybe next time I have only seen Persian and Arabic art on pictures, but I am sure that it will much more interesting to see some of those places in person.

Hello Porcospino
I was not aware of the online geography games that you mention here. This sounds like a lot of fun. I will be looking for something like this now that I am aware of it.
I have been to several monuments in my country, such as most of the monuments to the Civil War in the country in the late 1800's. I have been to Gettysburg, which is full of monuments, and too many other to mention.
I have been to most of the monuments, such as the Washington Monument, in the United States of America capital, Washington, D.C.
There is a famous monument called, Mount Rushmore, in South Dakota, USA, about 400 miles from where I live.
I cannot think of all the monuments, large, small, famous, infamous, and hardly known.

I like the geography games on a site called "Travel IQ challenge" or the geography games on Sheppard software, but there are many other kinds of online geography games. I think that games are fun and I have improved my knowledge about geography since I started playing the games. Sometimes my husband and I play the games together.
I have never been to the US, but I have seen pictures of Mount Rushmore. I would like to visit that monument as well as some of the other famous monuments in the US. A roadtrip in the US is one of my dreams, but it is not going to happen in the near future...

Thank you for providing me with these geography sites! That is very kind of you.
My brother is a Geographer, and I love hearing all the facts he seems to know about things all over the world. He has a shower curtain that is a map of the world, and it is surprising how accurate is this map on a shower curtain! I don't know why, but I am drawn to it.
