With the rising cost of food trying to make a special meal once in awhile can get pretty costly. My husband and I are still often surprised when we go to the grocery store and see the high price of just hamburger meat. I told him we should seriously consider becoming vegetarians. The last few times I made some new recipes it was almost twenty dollars for all the ingredients. So we are going to have to wait a whole month before we make any other new recipes.

Isn't it horrible how before, when families had to choose between gas to fill the car to get to work, or food to live? I know I downgraded on the QUALITY and QUANTITY of food for a few years but it cost me my beautiful hair! :(

2ryanong I agree with you we really don't have a choice. We just have too do the best that we can and shop thrifty. We all have to eat and so when prices go up we have to do our best to adjust. It is hard especially when we know that our income has remained the same.

Being vegetarian doesnt really cut down on grocery too much. Fruits and veggies are expensive too. I used to be veggian but in recent years i have re-included fish and bird into my diet. Anyway its still considered vegetarian. I spent around $200. a mo. on grocery and thats just for one person.

Sorry i almost forgot to mention. I save recipes ona DVD and i call it the neverending cookbook. Because im always add to it. The recipes i get from different website. I only keep recipes that dont have what i say is 101 ingredients. And ingredients that i usually keep in the house. Simple easy recipes.

That's a good thing that you do by keeping a recipes on a dvd. Yeah the price of fruits and vegetables are a lot. I think if we did stop eating meat and focused more on salads we would save more money. As eating meat close to three times a day does add up. And if we bought Spinach at a good price we could stretch that. I think salads should become our staple. Now adding a lot of items to it can add up.

Jim and I went food shopping together recently and were shocked at some of the prices! They were running some really good sales (BOGO on pork chops, but a smaller pack was still $7!) and a lot of dollar deals, but we miss having our new Bottom Dollar nearby.
Were the ingredients only good for those meals, or can you use them for others? I know what you mean-I've been trying to rebuild my pantry since last November, when we lost power for three days. It gets expensive!

So was your meal worth it? What did you make?
Remember I told you about those pork chops I bought? They're smaller ones, and I can't remember the last time I ate pork chops. I started to remember how much I liked the ones my mom used to make for us as a kid, and said to Jim, "how about Shake N' Bake instead of bread crumbs?" and both of our mouths started watering at the prospect. We kept reminding one another on our way to the checkout lines.
We remembered them driving home. Doh! Now they're in the freezer until the next shopping trip where we actually remember to BUY the Shake N' Bake!

Yeah most of the ingredients were used for that one meal. The seasoning and things like that can be used for others but everything else was for that meal. We don't make meals like that very often. We need to stock up our pantry as well.

I would say that I nearly always feel I spend a lot of money on groceries these days. All food items seem to be going up and up since the recession and credit crunch, yet other things like electrical goods and non-essentials seem to be staying the same, and in some cases getting cheaper. So I guess that I prefer to regard one as balancing out against the other. I even remember my parents and grand parents complaining about rising prices, so it is something that always seem to be with us. _Derek

Yeah the price of food and other necessary things continue to rise. I couldn't imagine what it would be like if we had cable or satellite how much we would be spending each month on that. We try to be thrifty and use our money for what is really needed. A lot of the time that means sacrificing other things.

price rise for the groceries are unbearable , and we are getting which saturated by pesticides, and local authorities are not able to control the prices, middle man make the bulk of the profit

I completely agree with you. The majority of the food is saturated by pesticides. And to get organic or natural it cost even more food. So it is hard all the way around to eat healthy for a good price. It just continues to rise.

I can't believe how high the prices are. I am divorced so I only have one income coming in so its twice as hard to buy food for myself and my son. But I don't eat much due to a stomach disorder so I mostly buy for my son. I just wish the prices would go down.

I'm on the same page as you with wishing the prices would go down. It is really awful that they are so high. The prices of food and gas go up and yet our paychecks stay the same. It's just so backwards and that makes it hard to make ends meet.

Yes the price of groceries just keeps rising and rising! There are some ways to save money though. What do you normally eat? In my household we like to make multiserving meals like a big pot of seafood chowder, chicken soup, stew, or something like that and then we eat primarily that for days. When we make dinners most of the time I will put part of my dinner away for lunch the next day so no need to make another meal. We also make meals like roast or a double batch of pork chops or a chicken dish and then have that for dinner two days in a row. Those are some of the ways that we make the money we spend on food stretch. I am also dieting which means I have cut a lot of things out of my diet that we used to buy at the storeand Ii am not replacing them with other things just forgoing those things altogether.
You have to shop smart in order to save money. Use coupons, plan out your meals for the week including lunches for work (also a good use of a big pot of stew or chili) if you pack a lunch then you don't have to spend the money on fast food and you have more control over what you eat and how many calories are in it. Shop sales and buy some off name brands like store brands or national brand generics.

I think that making multiserving meals is a great way to save money. It helps when you make a pot of something that will last a lot more than one meal. Yeah I'm with you I'm always buying the store brand products and it is definitely a good thing to plan lunches that way you don't go and buy fast foods which cost a lot and is unhealthy. We usually don't eat McDonald's breakfast but since we both have such a busy morning and afternoon planned my husband decided to get us breakfast at McDonald's and it's crazy how much a meal with a basic sandwich, hashbrown, and coffee adds up to. I'm glad he was treating :).

i get depressed every time i go grocery shopping! the price of food has gone up substantially! i plan my meals for a week and pretty much only shop the sales but even still. we try to go meatless at least once a week (which is near impossible for my hubby who is a meat and potatoes type of guy.)

Lol yeah I understand. We use to eat meat all the time too. We are doing a lot better about that especially since the prices of meat has went up. I agree with you that even with taking advantage of the sales grocery shopping can still be pretty expensive. I try to shop for the store brand items and I usually still think I spent too much.

I think I have spend more than 50% of my income on groceries, including meals, food materials, fruits and many small thing needed in daily life.
Every time, it will not take a great money from my pocket, so I do not pay enough attention to it, but as I have to go shopping every three days, so the total spending on the groceries is very great at the end.
I think I have to make a list before shopping, and cut the unnecessary things of the list.

Yeah I agree with you it is necessary for us to make a list before we go. That helps us to keep from impulse buying and to buy the necessary things that we need. It's crazy how quickly things can add up when we go shopping for food. A lot of the time we may only buy a few things and it seems as if we have spent an arm and a leg.

Yeah sometimes I spend a lot of money on groceries depending on how frugal I'm feeling because I shop at whole foods stores a lot and some of their foods can be pretty expensive. I also buy all my food organic so they are a little bit more pricy than regular but I know it's worth it because they are better for your health and pesticide and GMO free. Just today though I spent over ninety dollars on groceries, I did get quite a bit of groceries though.
I eat a mainly vegetable diet so if that's all I buy I can usually get a lot of groceries for around fifty bucks but I've been buying a lot of fruit recently as well and things for smoothies since it's getting hotter out. Overall though I try not to worry too much about the money that I spend on food because it helps to make me healthy and we all need to be more willing to invest into our health.

Yeah I agree with you that buying organic food and shopping at whole food stores are expensive. I would love to be able to shop at those places more but until our income is more we are limited in buying those types of food. But I know that eating that way is so much better. Yeah it is definitely a good thing for us to invest in our health, we may think that it is costly now to buy food like that but it could very well save us a lot of money because of health reasons in the future.

I suppose that even though different countries have different economies, we have problems with groceries in my country too. I don`t know how much is the price of hamburger meat where you live: here it is around US$9 a kilo (about 2 pounds). But 2 pounds of hamburger go a long way. I make an awesome sauce for spaguetti with half a pound of meat. It serves 6 people at least. There are expensive ingredients though, and I don`t buy them often. I can make ends meet though, by using cheap ingredients when they are on sale.

Yeah it is definitely a good thing to search for the sales. I too cut out ingredients for recipes that I think are too costly or that I can do without. This way we can use that money for other essential items. It is best to stretch everything we have.

I can remember grocery shopping with my parents as a child. if someone spent $50 on their groceries i was astounded. That was huge and it was also an enormous amount of groceries too. Now $50 will hardly allow you to buy that kind of grocery list. Everything goes up and up in price. it has become so easy to spend a lot of money on groceries without even realizing it.

I completely agree with you. Fifty dollars today does not go far at all. It is sad to see how few of items you can get with that type of money. Especially when you striving to by foods that are healthy and not a lot of processed foods.

I know how you feel about spending a lot of money on groceries because most of our budget goes to food. We get food stamps, but sometimes it seems like it is never enough. It is hard to stretch 300 a month for five people. I try to not buy too much meat, but it is almost impossible. The prices of fresh vegatables and fruits are rediculously high. I have also noticed that meat goes on sale approximately every 12 weeks. There are not many coupons available because most stores do not accept online printed coupons and the Sunday Papers do not have as many coupons like they used to.

Yeah it would be hard to stretch that amount for five people. You are absolutely right on how ridiculously high fresh fruits and vegetables are. It's hard to be able to keep those types of food in the house because they are so expensive. It would be nice if the cheap unhealthy food was expensive and the healthy food cheap.

Every time when I'm at the grocery stores, I feel tense of the high prices of the commodities... Especially the basic needs that we consume in every day life... It's a must to buy our personal care for hygienic purposes... But in the mean while the food products also increases my tensity really increases.... but that's the reality beneath our every day life.. And our role to pursue is to strive harder to meet our basic needs.... just accept the reality in life that all have the capacity to change its either increase or to decrease just be ready always...

Yeah just buying the basic things to eat daily is costly. It does make us depressed each time we go shopping. We try to our best to be thrifty and to shop for the name brand items. The cost of everything is still really high.

I live alone so I don't need a whole lot. I have to mauintain my home though and I have 5 pets. I reckon I do OK but it needs a lot of organisation to stay within the budget.
These days I find I'm buying mostly generic branded stuff, items on sale and items reduced for quick sale.
I buy small amounts of fresh produce so it's not wasted and I bulk up where and when I can so I don't have to shop so often.
I've been able to cut back lots because I've change my eating habits in my attempt to lose weight. I'm doing OK but I have hit a plateau for a while now.

Certain weeks the grocery bill is one that tends to be the thing that tests the budget the most. There are times where it just happens that everything runs low in the same week so we have to pick and choose what needs to be purchases from the store. Obviously keeping an eye out for sales to pick up some of the stuff when it is on sale will be essential.
When time is of the essence and there are times where we need items, it can be rather hard. So there are weeks where the grocery bill can make me weep, as I reassess my strategy and rather wonder where I went wrong. Obviously, the best laid plans can often times go right out of focus and we will be unable to get everything in order as it should be.

Yeah I completely agree with you. Things can really get out of order when it comes to buying food. As the majority of us love to eat and we like to eat good things. Eating healthy in itself is expensive. It's amazing how cheap and fast, fast food can be. I think it should be vice versa.
