What is that awful chemical taste?

So I got some white wheat bread the other week, and I don't like it but I'm not willing to waste food to throw it away. There is some kind of chemical after taste that I cannot identify. It's faint, but it's there. I can't stand that taste. It reminds me of the smell of biology class when we were dissecting dead animals. I'm not sure if it is the same chemical. I have a mental block right now and can't think of the chemical preservative. White wheat is not supposed to have preservatives in it. Has anyone else tasted that awful but faint taste I'm talking about here? If you have, what is it? Why does it have that awful taste? I've eaten this bread a few years ago and never noticed anything unusual. Have you noticed it?

Take it back. Even if it's not formaldehyde, if it tastes bad, it tastes bad. If it tastes bad, don't eat it.

Most groceries will cheerfully exchange or refund for food that tastes "off" as they want to keep their good reputation.

Another thing you could do is e mail the manufacturer and tell them about it. Describe the taste and tell them you live too far from the grocery to return it. Tell them you will not buy that product again.

We live a good ways to the store now that we moved. I'm just going to throw it out. I told my daughter that since we have other bread I'm going to throw it out. We have eaten a loaf and a half and it all tastes that faint bad taste.

The chemical you are thinking of is probably formaldehyde. I would take the bread back to the store and tell them it tasted bad. Maybe it got contaminated in the processing. It should not taste that way at all. I wonder if it could be something in the environment at your house? Hope you do not get sick from it.

Oh I agree with Gerty, and don't eat any more. Formaldehyde is not a good thing to ingest.

Even though it is not supposed to happen, sometimes things get contaminated while in storage.

We ate one loaf and part of another and that taste is there throughout. I told my daughter that I'm going to throw the rest of that loaf out. I'm not going to buy anymore. I've bought this bread before and it was fine. I thought it was just me but my daughter noticed it too. It's a faint taste. There isn't supposed to be any preservatives but I think there are.

I prefer to bake my own bread because of the preservatives that are included in ready to eat bread. Home made bread will begin to get dry after about 2 days, while bread from a store will keep quite well for up to 2 weeks or until it begins to spoil. I object to these additives, and wonder what they do to the human consumer? Scary isn't it?

That's a good idea. I might like to get a recipe off the Net and try baking some bread also. I wouldn't be very good at slicing it as good as it comes sliced from the store.. but it would be good.

I hope what you are tasting is not formaldehyde. Ugh! But it is definitely some kind of chemical to help preserve the bread. I don't buy any Kraft products because their is a nasty after taste. I haven't tasted the chemical in the bread and hope I don't. I do like my bread and rolls and such.

I think I would reccomend you read the label on the next one you buy. If it has chemicals I wouldn't buy it!

I don't know what it is, but that is what it reminds me of. It tastes something like what that smells like.. but just faint. It may be some other chemical but it is definitely a chemical taste. I'm tossing the bread. I have other white bread that isn't white wheat.. it's just plain white bread.

Oh, yuck. I haven't tried white wheat bread, but that doesn't sound appetizing at all. I wonder if there is something wrong with the batch that bread came from. Maybe you should contact the manufacturer and let them know about that awful aftertaste. I guess it's possible that an ingredient could cause it, but if you've had the same bread in the past I think there's probably something off about it. The store might refund the price if you bring it back to where you bought it.

It's not good. Both loaves I bought were like this. I've bought this kind of bread before and never noticed anything off about it, but this is really off.

You should stop eating it right now! Bread shouldn't taste of chemicals, you should go to the store and get your money back or atleast a new bread!

I called the manufacturer. They are sending someone to my home to pick up the bread and they are going to replace my bread with another bread I love which is honey wheat. They are bringing me a big goody bag. I'm glad I called them. They are going to take that bread to their lab to see what is wrong with the bread.

Hard to say what the taste was. It was probably from some part of the processing of the bread they over did it on something. Sadly though it says all natural many chemicals are naturally occurring but it's when they add it to things that they don't naturally occur in is when it can be a problem.

Well there's a numerous amount of things in cheaper breads that make it taste bad such as bleached flour, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, mono and diglycerides, and any other perservatives they may use. I can't really eat too much processed food because after avoiding it for so long now when I eat it I'm really sensitive to it and I end up feeling badly soon afterwards. My advice would be to read the ingredients list on the bread you're buying and if you can't identify something in the ingredients don't buy it.

This is not a cheap bread. It's a premium bread made by Nature's Own. I'm getting it replaced with another one if my favorite breads. They are coming tomorrow ir Monday to pick up the bad bread.

I know what you mean. That taste is there because the bread is starting to go bad. I would return the bread to the store and get my money back if I were you.

It was fresh bread... I mean it's not old bread. It wasn't day old bread or anything... but it tastes off. It's got a chemical taste.. not a moldy taste. I know what mold tastes like... I've bitten into moldy bread before it turned green before.. this isn't that. Anyway, I'm throwing it out. I can't afford to toss out food but it will be awhile before I can get to the store again.

Hi there. I had pretty much the same experience but it was the bunch of meat pies that I bought from a bakery that I have always gone to for my breads and pastries. I was so disappointed to have that after taste of the meat it self and it tasted like it was old and and so bitter. I didn't have a choice but to just throw the food away since I wasn't able to return it back that day. Those meat pies were supposed to be for my dinner and since I bought them a few minutes before the bakery closed, I didn't have the chance to complain about it and return them for a whole new bunch or at least get a refund. If you can still return those bread, do it soon rather than suffer an upset stomach for eating them and not getting your money's worth.

Hi back to ya! In my case, I don’t think it was due to spoilage. It’s a chemical taste. I need to call them and see what they say. I threw out the bread. I need to get it out and call the number. I’m sorry you had that happen with the meat pies. I like meat pies… like chicken pot pies and beef pot pies.

I've never tasted that before. We used to buy white bread all the time and I'd eat it with just butter and never noticed any weird after taste. I don't really know what the chemical is, but I don't think it's normal for bread to taste that way though.

This isn't plain white bread Courtknee. You have heard of White Wheat made by Nature's Own? Nature's Own is a great brand. I think tomorrow I will write the company. I may call the 800 number and talk to them. I ate the first loaf because I don't have food to waste. I have even eaten half of this second loaf. It's just a faint chemical taste. I've never noticed it before. It's not made me sick. It is just an off taste. I was going to toss the bread but I'm going to contact the company first.

They think it is either wild yeast or pre mold that I'm tasting. To me it tastes like a chemical.
