To the future or the past?

The other day, I was asked, "If you can travel to the past or the future, which would you travel to?" And I answered the past. I wanted to travel to the past because I wanted to meet historical figures and up date them on how far their dreams have come. I wanted to let John Lennon know that the US has gone to war again, etc. But then, I realized, that.. I guess it's still early to tell how the story ends. I was also worried that if I went to the future, I'd only be depressed at how much the world is depleted and nature no longer existing. Then, I changed my mind.. because if I see how bad the world is in the future, I can come back and make changes so that it doesn't turn out that way. Also, my visit to the past can disrupt the course of things and the me now may not exist! Or if I go to the future, that caused the future to become depressing? Well, in conclusion, I'm glad I cannot travel to the past or the future. I'll just stay right where I am, haha! Thoughts?

I think I'd agree with you eventually. I would love to see history unfold firsthand and take a good look at the middle ages and the Renaissance. I think the historical figure that I would want to meet the most would actually be Joan of Arc because she fascinates me so much. But I would be afraid of altering the past in a bad way (and catching the plague! ). I wouldn't want to see the future because on many levels, I just don't want to know what the future holds. I'm afraid it might depress me.

I would be really torn. I would love to go back to victorian times but I think I would almost like to see the future more because then I could come back and tell my grandchildren what to look out for. I am glad I can't travel forward or back too because I would be so torn between the two.

Thank goodness huh? I would be afraid what ever I chose wouldn't be as exciting as the other.

I've read books where people time travel. Its actually my favorite science fiction subject.
I've seen where they do change the past, I've seldom seen a really reasonable take where they go to the future - unless it was someone coming from the past to the current time - done well.
I, personally, kind of have the same view of Anne McCaffrey in her Pern books, that they (the dragons with their riders and any passengers) can travel in time, but they can't change things.
Mine is more - that since you've traveled to the past, you did it anyway and so you were meant to be there....

I would travel to the past and the future. Why do one without the other? I would love to see of things have gotten worse or better in the future. Just because we have a preconceived notion that things are bad now and it will be worse in the future is not always true. It could be much better. I would love to go to the past to change some things that I have done and some choices I have made. That way my time now would be much better then it already is.

I think you are absolutely right. Though the discussion is one everyone has had with someone during there life, it keeps beeing af relevant topic. Have you read the book ''1984'' of George Orwell? It's wonderful! And i just wonna say - he made a mindtravel to what the future was in his eyes. He was surprisingly right - and wrong! That is so, so, So scary.
Travel to the past, travel to the future - how is it we tend to focus so much on these two, and forget the moment we have right here. Yesterday was historie, tomorrow is a dream - only the moment NOW is actually existing..

I know all the things that happened in the past and I don't know what will occur in the future. I would like to re-visit certain times I had in the past and my past trips to other countries. I would do my studies again, travel around the world which I did when I was twenty years old and have previous properties to live in again. Yes, really I will have to stay in the current year.

If I would travel in time, I'd go back to the past. I probably wouldn't want to travel to the past when I didn't exist yet. I'd mostly travel back in time and correct my past. It would be pretty cool to try and fix some of the problems, or update people back then on what's going on now. I wouldn't want to go back into the future because the future would be the effect of what we did in the past. I think I'd rather wait and be mildly surprised and find out what's in store for me, rather than try to live how I'm supposed to live so I can reach that future. Besides, what if whatever I do now ends up the same? And what if the outcome is something really bad? At least, if I went back to the past, I could do some things over, and I could live life the way I've wanted to live it. Although, that might change some things that I'm enjoying right now, so I'm not really keen on the idea of doing any major changes to my past.

The pictures of the past is so...interesting to me. I imagine if I could go to the past. But, I don't think I want to go there, cause every periods have some good and sad moments.

Same here, glad that time travels doesn't exist since if it does, making a change in the past may lead to a different present where somethings aren't the way it should be and can lead things to never exist. On the other side, traveling to the future will only cause you depression or maybe trauma if you have saw things that are at their worst like war, destroyed nature, and the likes. Just like the saying "Yesterday is history tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called present." We should be thankful what we have at present.

Past would be the best time to travel if I am given the chance. Not that I can meet historical things and more. I just want to see how the world looks like when there is still peace and unity among people. Unlike now that people are fighting for money, fame and many more things. But personally, I didn't chose the future for I am just excited on what tomorrow brings for me. :)
