some thoughts on using the brown paper

Since June 01, here in our province plastic bags are already prohibited. Malls now use brown paper instead of plastic in wrapping dry goods. And they also encourage the customers to buy their ecobags.
One time when I was in the jeepney and it was raining, most some of the people who came from the mall has their purchases in the brown papers , wet from the rain and thus torn. It was really a big bother to be just carrying them in your arms. You have to have an ecobag to carry the purchases if it is more than 2 pieces.
It’s a good thing, I always have an ecobag in my bag whenever I go out, before its implementation.

Here in NYC they have not banned plastic bags but they are a sing people to use those canvas bags for groceries and other things. I think those bags are a good idea. But like you said, when it rains the contents get wet. They do have some bags where the inside is water proof. But they are also recycling plastic as well and making plastic bags out of recycled plastic. Which is also a good thing.

Plastic bags out of recycled plastic? Sorry, I get confused there ,inertia?
So you mean they will thaw those plastics and make them plastic bags again? Or reusing the plasticbags over and over again until they are torn and cannot be used anymore?

It is good for your province to implement the said usage of paper bags. Yes, there are some disadvantage especially when raining. It can be easily torn. This will give lesson to buyers to keep on having eco bags or other materials that can be used when shopping. this will help them edducate on how to save our environment even in a small way.

Though there's that disadvantage, the advantage is far greater in the long run for the province.
I hope through it, floods can be lessened already, of course with the help of the construction of better drainage system for the the different places.

You are right, Using paper in the long run will provide more advantage rather than disadvantage.
What I just want to point in this project, the brown paper must be coming from ecycled ones also because using vigin pulp in production of this type of paper will really cut ot of trees. Which in turn will result into floods also.

I think that's already thought of and being implemented , my friend.
The government is already running after those illegal loggers and i hope they give them stiffer penalty.

Ecobags are a great idea! I have several purchased from the store that were made from recycling plastic bottles. I love them, but they are difficult to wash so I plan to switch to canvas bags soon. They are more sturdy and have stronger seams, and they can easily be thrown into the washer.

The bags are very handy! You can carry so many things in them and reuse them over and over. They can hold more weight than the disposable bags also.

I am happy that people now are into using those Ecobags.
Imagine , seeing people on the streets now, carrying their own preferred color of ecobags. And some common people have them as their bag in going out.

Hi SimplyD
The malls here too have stopped using the plastic bags because of some government ruling. But this is not yet 100% implemented and they still give out plastic bags on some purchases of veggies etc.
If the other products are purchased, they expect you to have your own bags and in case you dont have, they sell you at much higher prices
We still use plastic bags as the paper bags are not much in circulation and the ones which are arent strong enough to carry bigger volumes. So we have a couple of Plastic Carry bags which are larger in size and also stronger. It will take a while before the better paper ones are available here and we would migrate from plastic to paper

Sad if that is the case sids. It would eventually be a failure after all.

Don't you have the ecobags there dis, which are biodegradable for the dry goods?
Well, i think wet products are being placed also in thin plastics. But it will also be eventually eradicated.
Yes, they sell the ecobags in higher price, because they know that one will buy them or else they have nothing to put on their various purchases.

Hello, Simplyd! Starting Sept 1, all business establishments in this city requires a non-plastic bag shopping. I know how bad these plastics have contributed to our environment as what we have seen in the previous Monsoon Rains that we have experienced. I guess the best solution is the use of the eco bags since it is stronger than paper bags. Now when you go malling, you have to tag along these eco bags coz you have to pay 2 pesos for every plastic bag.

It's good that finally Quezon City has already implemented that.
I am glad that here in our province, we have implemented it earlier.
Now people always have a folded bag in their working bags, in case they pass by the grocery.
It's hard if there are bottled goods and its place in a brown paper bag. You have to use two hands to carry it. So, ecobag comes in handy.

Here in my place I think the City goverment passed an ordinance to used brown paper instead of plastic bag, so even fast food restaurants needed to used brown paper now. I usually used ecobag when I go to grocery and market to avoid from using plastic bag and the same time if I used my ecobag I can earned double points from my loyalty card in the supermarket. Also ecobag is more durable that brown paper.

Yes, and people realized it too that using an ecobag is more durable and could accomodate a lot of purchases in one sling of the big bag on the shoulder.
So, i always make sure i have a folded ecobag in my bag, just in case.

It's really nice to know that people are beginning to think for the good of our Mother earth.
I hope all over the world, we should just use ecobags or biodegradable bags instead.

it is too bad that stores are using brown paper bags because they are killing trees to make them. i use a canvas or other type of shopping bags (they are plastic coated but can be used for several years before they wear out.) here in Canada, in the city where i live, they charge 5 cents per bag and by using canvas or the other type of bag, you are saving money and saving trees.

I really don't know where those brown papers comes from actually. If it does come from trees then it's not good.
So ecobags should really be used instead. So, you might as well have a small ecobag too.

It is very good thing.Nowadays plastic is becoming the cause for the environment pollution.Plastic is the major waste in the world now.Proper disposal of plastic is not possible though. So it is very important to control plastic. For that many other substitution are there.According to ease of use we can select the mode.

Yes, my friend. It seems that plastics are being used all over the world.
But with the floods becoming frequent everywhere, the plastics are now being given attention to be eradicated.
I really hope that someday every place will not be using plastic anymore.

I am not against the ecobag system, but from where the brown papers came from.
Here in metro cities, malls implemented every weekends that shoppers should bring their own ecobags or plastic bag.
That is better I guess, so everyone knows how to re-use plastic bags.
Eco bags are indeed good also but some eco bags are not durable :xxx

I am not sure if those brown papers are not from the tree pulps.
But i really hope they are not, because it would after all be also a cause for floods, because trees have to be cut down for the making of brown papers.

Hey there SIMPLYD,
Well i think we should stick with the eco-bags since we already do have some because it is more durable than paper bags so that we can avoid over need for cutting trees and making too many paper bags that doesn't last long, eco-bags are the answer.

That's true deo.
So we might as well two folded ecobags in our bags. The small and the big ones for small purchases and big purchases respectively.

hello Simplyd,
luckily i have never been in such situation before and your discussion served as an eye opener for me. i too will make it a point to include an Eco bag in my carrying whenever i go out for shopping. though i carry it most of the time but i never gave a thought that without carrying it, i could get trapped in such inconvenient situation. thank you dear

This is the reason why I love eco bags. Although they can be costly at times, it is way better than the brown paper bag especially when it is raining.

Correct, my friend. And you can actually sling them in your shoulders unlike the plastic bags.
You can buy different colors should you like. The same color as what you are wearing when you go to the mall. Still stylish ha?

I honor your province for implementing such a wonderful idea in order to conserve and help our environment. Maybe providing an ecobag to each person there for free would be another great step in order to expand furthermore that campaign for saving our environment.

Actually, this should have been implemented earlier last year. But because it is an ordinance, it has to pass some lots of meetings with the officials of each place here in our province.
But i am glad that it's finally implemented. Imagine a man carrying an ecobag colored red? Cute!

Here in india, they have banned use of the so called plastic bags too because the cause clogging of drains, cattle eat them and die too, only biodegradable plastic bags are allowed; but it is not observed strictly, by habit we don't carry cloth bags as we used to do while going for marketing, so one can still buy things in plastic bags..
thanks for information

That's good to know that you also practice the "no plastic" policy. Though, also in the we market, they still use those thin plastics only.
I really don't know if eventually they will require the biodegradable plastics.

Well ecobags is really helpful in so many ways.
Here in our place, using brown paper are implemented in most establishment. We it is eco-friendly indee but still some disadvantages like when buying a bit heavy stuffs that may cause of breaking the paper or sometimes buying wet or moist stuff that could also break the paper.Ecobags are still better.

So Ardoy, make it a habit to always have a folded eco-bag in your backpack. That way, should you decide that you pass by a grocery you have a ready durable ecobag to carry them all.
I always have one in my bag.
