I am 33 now, I know I am old but why I am afraid to cross the street or road with cars passing by. I wasn't like this when I was younger. there is no incident that traumatize me. this affects some situation that I need to do. I'd rather get a long ride than crossing the road to get to the exact PUV on my home, just as long as I don't cross the road. I can, on small streets and slow moving vehicles but not on highway like most people here do since there is no over or underpass. Why I feel scared when I am older now? i am also afraid to ride bicycle or single motor on roads.

Maybe because our reflexes are getting slower when we gets older. We are not as fast when we were younger. But for me that is ok, it will keep you safe. We better be careful all the time and avoid dangerous move like crossing on the street with vehicles moving fast. Let's just wait when there's only few or no vehicles passing before we cross, that is much wiser and safer decision.

I think it was just normal to be afraid of crossing a big street or in a high way. Maybe you are scared because old age can also mean you are not that fast moving anymore unlike on our younger years.
I had been hit by a car before so I become very careful when crossing the streets but not to the sense that I am too afraid to do it. Having someone to cross the road can also add up on courage of crossing.

It's your fear. All people have fears. But, it's a good thing that you're afraid because it will save you. There's nothing wrong if you're afraid. It's totally normal. One year ago, I'm also afraid of crossing the road when I'm riding a bicycle because I'm always conscious of what other people will say if I cause a traffic. LOL. yes, it's true. But then I conquer my fear and now I am confident every time I cross the street.

You feed your own fear. How? By not accepting it and also avoiding certain things you need or should or have to do. And since you do so you also have a lack of practise, and this will only underestimate your self esteem.
What I do find insulting is the fact you say: I am 33 now, I know I am old! 33 is not old you can start your life at that age. Many people get 90 years old or even older which means you only have lived 1/3 of your life. I think already given up on you since "you are old" is one of the worst things you can do.
I think crossing a highway is not necessary to survive. If it's really needed practise it (with someone else). Look very well, know how you walk (slow, faster) and before you cross observe the cars. How do they drive.
If it's not necessary to cross a highway you can also accept this from yourself and stop making an issue out of it. There is no reason to all of us to exactly do or like the same. This does not make you a better or worser or older person.
There are plenty of people who don't like to drive a motor, nothing wrong with that either. If you think bicycling might improve your life go practise that with help of someone else.
Only if you practise, face the problem you can get over it.
It sounds to me you are traumatized, perhaps nothing happened to you personally and you heard about accidents or you read about it in the news and you made this story yours. Work on it, fight it if necessary and stop feeding your own fear.

Ever since we all know that fear is only on our minds. When we tend to let that fear rule us.. that's the time we get to be affected of it. We usually get frightened in doing such action because we always think of the negative first to happen than positive.
Why not take risks now?? You're I think old enough. Or you can actually practice crossing streets with somebody first. Then afterwards, try to do it on your own.
As has been said, face your fear..

A friend of mine also afraid to cross the streets alone especially on roads that are really wide and lots of vehicles passing. She also go with the crowd and if alone, she will wait for other people to cross.Maybe afraid of somethings might happened if crossing it alone.

I afraid to cross the road too.Today my husband and I decided to go to the nearest mall to purchased some grocery items and since the mall was a few blocks away we decided to walk. It's too late when we discovered that the traffic lights was not working and most of the public and private vehicle are in hurry to pass by here in south super highway. Since its hard to cross the roads in this situation we decided to ride a jeepney even if it cost some money and take a few minutes before we could reach the mall.
I think we are scared about crossing the road because we are afraid to get hurt or worst get die just because of the negligence of some drivers.

Hello luisaR
Maybe it's because now that you are older, you are aware of all that can go wrong? When we're younger, ignorance can be bliss.
Why did the cow cross the road?
