Good Reason to Be Fat?

I think there are a lot of people in the world who are overweight because they eat the junk food that you can in practically every neighborhood called McDonalds, and I find that to be an unreasonable way to get fat. My mother is a great cook; I cannot live without the food she cooks, and she always seems to rediscover her ways of cooking. It's absolutely indescribable.
Aside from the usual stirfry that she can make, she skins potatoes, slices them into long threads of "potato-ey" goodness, and then cooks it; alongside, she adds these spices to make the potato spicy, and when she's done cooking it, It's enough to fill everyone up.
This afternoon, I had chicken livers; It was not a preference I had because I never liked the taste of Chicken Livers, but today I have a different change of thought. It's not all that bad. She added a couple of green peppers as well as a certain brown paste that made it spicy and made it taste a bit tangy as well.
Would you say this is a good reason to be overweight? I mean, being overweight is not good for your health, but if you're enjoying the good life and having decent food, doesn't that justify being overweight, compared to eating junk food?

I too am overweight, but i cant say it is from McDonalds or any of the other fast food outlets, although i do enjoy the occassional treat from these places.
I'm a chef by trade, or was until I studied and became a carer for the disabled. But food and cooking is in my blood....
I used to cook all the fancy cream based dishes from France, and Belgium. But my love of food has turned me more to the mediteranean and african style of cooking...they have an array of interesting herbs and spices we have never heard of and the food is delicious.
I am slowly losing weight as am going back to the healthy ways of cooking.
Personally, even though I too fell into the trap of rationalizing that being overweight was ok because i was a chef, I dont feel that way now.
No matter if you or your mother or who ever is a great cook, being overweight is not an excuse. As stated above it is bad for your health in so many ways as well as for your self esteem.
You can enjoy your food and not be overweight too

I don't think there's ever a good reason to be overweight. There are medical reasons I would say an overweight person has a good excuse for why they're overweight. I once knew a girl who'd had brain surgery and as a result her metabolism was completely screwed up. All she would eat were veggies and salads, but she still ballooned. That was a long time ago, I don't know if it ever righted itself.
I mean, it's good to eat food that you enjoy, but if it makes you gain weight it is typically not good for your body. It would be better to take it in moderation.

Well everyone's different. I'd rather be fit and healthy, free of the fatigue, back problems/joint problems, risk of heart disease or diabetes that being overweight causes. I'd rather be active, attractive, and able to run around and play with children. There are some things about living past 50 that scare me to be sure, but I want to live to see grandchildren and great-children if I can. I used to think that great-tasting food could make me happy, but great taste doesn't last long and it doesn't always help you in the long run. I'd rather live good and active for a long time then settle for enjoying temporary tastes.

Well yes, there is that. Eating in moderation does go into how I eat, but at the path you're going towards, I'm starting to ask whether dying because of enjoying food is a justifiable excuse to living for a very long time and eating the same junk food every day.
I'd kind of rather die of enjoying food; Maybe it's just me, but I bet Life would be difficult after the usual 30s-50s range, and I fear of living to be that old with so many disabilities as well as financial problems.

Woops, excuse myself; I sometimes have my hands work faster than my brain. I mean to say in that last sentence is that "I fear living to be that old with many disabilities and/or financial problems would be terrible compared to living life short and enjoying the good food.

Are you overweight? If you are, i think you should avoid potatoes as they add more calories. Start eating more of leafy vegs and fruits. Iam 60kgs and have athletic body. If even my belly starts to bulge a bit, i worry about it and do some push ups and belly exercise in my free time. Because once your belly comes out it is very hard to get it flat..like some of my friends say. I don't think junk food is the only reason.

My goodness, people and their assumptions :S
I'm not overweight, but I'm not holding a 6-pack on my stomach. Any suggestions on how to reduce stomach fat though? It's pushing out a bit, and I've already started to reduce proportions on how much I eat.

There is no good reason to be overweight due to health related problems, having say that, it is not any one choice to become overweight, it is mainly the problem of a person metabolism that resulted in overweight. When a person eat decent food, it is unlikely he will become overweight unless he eat non stop and in big quantity every time.

It's kind of difficult to choose at times, because my friends sometimes influence me to buy something sweet, and I know for a fact that many of the things that are made by large corporations in America (like Hostess) put sugar by the pound into each of their snacks, but it's also very delicious.
I guess I peer pressured myself into buying it, but it very rarely happens. :S

I do not know what you mean by justify. As the long term results of obesity are the same if you got fat from McDonald's or from organic chicken livers from a farm with no added hormones. Same thing. Though you will get fatter if you eat a steady diet of fast food if you end up fat from eating anything bad your whole life you will suffer just as much.
Clogged arteries, blood clots from cholesterol, gout, leg tumors, and a ton of other obesity related illnesses do not ask questions. Does the philosophy of weight really matter? Does it really matter why you got fat? In a word, no. Same result. But it sounds to me like you by eating so much home made food with vegetables might not be as unhealthy as you think. You might just need to lose a few pounds. I doubt you are extremely obese.

No worries. The homemade food that we have don't always have meat or a "pound of lard" in each recipe. There's actually a lot of broccoli, spinach, and other chinese vegetables that is absolutely delicious, but what I mean to justify is whether homecooking is a good reason to justify being overweight; Overweight meaning a bit fat, but not the extent where the doctor explains that "X" person is obese.
Thanks.

Hello McCreeper and welcome to myLot. Eating at home or at a fast food place can make a person fat . There really isn't a good excuse or reason to be fat from either one. Over eating in both places will cause one to be fat. I remember back almost 40 years ago when the serving were much smaller than they are today. A large coke or sodas were about 12 oz and a regular size was 8 oz. Our dinner plates at home have gotten a lot bigger too. Any meal served at a regular restaurant are big enough to feed two or three people.
Your mother sounds like a good cook but it still doesn't justify for a person to be over weight.
Being over weight is so unhealthy and more so being uncomfortable. I see obese people and they look so miserable. Now I have my own struggles with weight so and when I gain some weight I find myself uncomfortable.

While its not a reason to be fat, unfortunately for those that are on a set minimum pension some fast food is cheaper than buying all the ingredients just to make it.
Personally your mother and I have a lot in common.
I have cooked most of my life and have always tweeked recipes and learned others with having a family.
I mainly will get a tea from McDonalds if I am going to be out and about in my car.
Maybe once a month I will get a cheeseburger. not a quarter pounder,or any of their other monstress sandwiches.
When I order, the people are TOLD and TAUGHT to upsell. if you order a sandwich then you gotta have fries. if you order fries you gotta have something to drink or a sandwich.
I worked at McD's.
It was all about selling to them. But even though selling the person purchasing is the one that has to take a step back and think what they are getting for that extra 50 cents to upsize.
I never do. I have to be really hungry to order a cheeseburger.
But other than that, McD's only knows me for their 1.00 tea.

lol, Mccreeper, That would be a "NO" as far as I am concern,
I am sure, based on your testimony, that your mom is a great
cook..but overweight is overweight.
.Do you think any one, being it another person or a doctor,
would be able to look at you and determine if you are overweight
from McDonalds or your Mom's cooking...
You can not justify overweight comparing McDonalds to home cooking.

I simply find it controversial because for the most part, I see a lot of "over-the-top" kind of overweight people, and I usually think that they are eating food at McDonalds, and when they reply back, most of them DO say it's from eating at "X" Fast food place.
I don't believe I'm considered obese, but I find it rather odd how some people can manage to let themselves go to a certain extent where over half of your composition is based off of the fat that you have took in.

You're being fat the right way! *Highfive*
But it is dangerous for your health, especially when you weigh over 100 kilo. I suggest you to go outside and do some sports maybe. One of the best things to do is to take your iPod, iPhone or whatever you use and go out and run! It's really easy to run when you're hearing music!
If you haven't done any sports or been out running or something like that I suggest that you start with running for 2 minutes then walk 2 minutes then run 2 minutes etc. This is really great with music since most songs are around 2 minutes and you can then change whenever the song changes!

Haha, no worries. I exercise a couple of times a week, but my exercise is not too vigorous. I guess I am a bit "plump" if you will, but not to the point where people would eyeball at me like I'm the Sear's Tower. :D
But thanks for your feedback. :)

Im not spoiling your discussion, yes sometimes being fat is "good", but I think being healthy is better.Yeah being fat is good because you can care less about the types of food you eat unlike those models whom I feel bad for they restrict themselves from eating sweets,it's not about the appearance,It's the health.Being overweight means you've been eating too much.Things that are "too much" is always bad.My mom is a great cook too,She cooks the best Filipino foods,I used to be fat when I was young but now im a young adult I choose to be fit and eat less.My mom gets upset whenever I leave some leftovers on my plate. But I choose to be healthy even if my mom cooks a lot for me.
