My friend just had an operation for tonsillectomy and she told me that her doctor instruct her to eat as much ice cream as she wants just as long as the flavor is plain, meaning no nuts, chocolate bits, nor marshmallows allowed.
Apparently, ice cream can help heal the wounds caused by the operation that is why she is encouraged to indulge! It find it amazing that pleasurable food such as ice cream can do wonders aside from the usual happiness it can bring to a person who loves to eat ice cream

Hi Ladyhemingway,
The icecream does not really help heal after a tonsillectomy. The throat is very raw and sore and the icecream being so cold is soothing. It is one of the few things that a person can eat after having the tonsils removed. Broth, puddings, yogurts, applesauce etc are also good. The doctor gives a list of foods that can be eaten without irritating the throat after surgery and icecream is one of the ones on the list. It's not a medication.

Yes, I have heard of that!! I guess they "prescribe" ice cream as it's cold (good for healing wounds) and creamy - not abrasive to the throat after such a surgery. Sometimes they tell parents to give their little ones popsicles when they have a fever - to bring down the temperature. At least they will eat it because it's sweet and not get dehydrated - and cool down at the same time.

Really. This is a newer information.I thought that ice cream will worsen the things. And cool substance will increase the chance of tonsillitis?.Tonsillectomy is the surgery on the tonsils.right?.So how it is useful the curing of this.I am confused.I think it need some confirmation.

While this is true that it is not a medication rather than just a soft creamy food that can be swallowed without any problem after having such a surgery, it is a good thing to know. I heard this years ago in fact, when I was a child. I guess they still kind of "prescribe" it so it must work as an aide to help the healing process.

I've heard that before, I also have a classmate (not friend? LOL!) who had a surgery and had his tonsils removed when he was 7. Ice cream was what he had consumed the most after the operation because the doctor told him so. ^^ But before I met him I've heard that already, that consuming cold foods or drinks could help remedy tonsilitis or sore throat as long as the food/beverage is not too sweet.

Hello lady. I and my brother had our tonsils out almost sixty years ago. Ice cream was the only thing we could even thing of eating. It was soothing to a very raw throat. I'm almost two years older tan my brother and I was so mad at him because he could eat the ice cream the first day and my throat hurt to much for even ice cream. He just sat in the bed next to mine eating ice cream all day long. I wanted to hit him for that at the time.
The ice cream probably helped with the swelling of the surgery. I believe that a lot of surgeries have ice packs put on them to keep the swelling down and helps to stop any bleeding.

It is good for being able to swallow and keep the swelling down. She can enjoy it for a few days.

Being able to eat as much ice cream as I wanted, was the only good thing about my tonsillectomy!

hi ladyhemingway! this is fascinating news, and best wishes to your friend on her healthful recovery! as mental and emotional health is the psychoartist's career field, i would like to point out that ice cream could definitely be used as an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety aid!

I never really thought about them being restricted as to what type they can have. But I suppose it makes sense all those lil extra things in the ice cream could irritate an already irritated area.

Hello ladyhemingway
I hope that your friend is recovering nicely from her operation. I remember when I was a child I was jealous of my brothers because they had the tonsillectomy and got to eat all the ice cream they wanted, but I never had that surgery.
These days, I eat ice cream on a daily basis. I consider this to be a preventative medication.
