Planting trees

India
June 10, 2012 3:01am CST
5th June was observed as World Environment day, I was in house of my friend in Sakhigopal, he was the guest of honor in a celebration of this day; we went to the meeting with him. We planted trees, a politician presided over the meeting, there were garlanding, cultural shows, video shootings etc, that will be shown in tv. I know this is just wastage of public money, no one will take care of the plants, they will die out. In 1973 I was serving as a lecturer in a college, on the foundation day of the college each lecturer and the Principal planted one tree; the college gardener took care of the plants. I had visited this college last in 2003, I was amazed to see this tree fully grown; well maintained and each tree has a board near it showing the name of the planter. So how you observed the ‘World Environment Day’? Have you ever taken part in tree plantation? What is your experience? Please share and comment on this. Thanks in advance. Prof.Dr. B.Saraf. PhD 10th June 2012.

For me every single day is a world environment day. I have a lush green garden, well maintained with trees, flowering plants, lawn, a bird bath, and a water fall. The kitchen waste is used for compost and that compost is used to fertilise my garden. The waste water from the bath, kitchen and wash basins is directed to trees.

hi, i think this planting trees is an adventure one, though i still never experience it,but i am hoping to experience it someday, its really good to plant trees so that it will return the beauty of our mother earth and nature.having many trees will surely lessen the floods and land slides.

hi professor, same as you, it is mostly tree planting and cleaning up of drainage canals and beaches. it was a very long time since i had a tree plated in my name, and that was a requirement for college graduation. i think the best way is seminars and educating the people on how best to preserve nature at its best and the rainforest. the politicians should avoid giving certificates to subdivision owners on tree cutting especially if the area is mountainous because that causes erosion and landslides. for people with lands, i encourage them to plant trees, if not fruit bearing trees. that way, they get fruit harvest in the future and preserves clean environment because trees helps eliminate carbon dioxide in the air. have a nice day. ann

It is the curse for our country sir. Most of the celebrations would lose the main theme for what it is celebrated. People just want a day to celebrate and they do it in the occasions came or they just make it. I never celebrated such one till now. But I have planted one plant in the roadside of our village and watered it till I could do it. Unfortunately nothing grown there as it has no safety later when I left there.
