Pugsley

A friend of my daughter's offered us a Pug several weeks ago. My daughter has wanted a dog for a long time and a pug is one breed that is allowed in my home. Mind you, I prefer a basenji but we do like pugs, as well and since this one is free, I said okay we would take her.
Well, that was several weeks ago. In the meantime these people have vacillated back and forth several times. Yes they would give us the pug. No, the former owner wanted it. Yes, we could have her. No, they might just keep her. And so forth. I finally said forget it, I didn't need to be jerked back and forth like that. Either they were giving us the pug or they weren't and they needed to stop flipflopping like that.
So last night my daughter's friend called to say, yes, we could have the pug and could they bring her by today. Well, I said, it's Sunday and we'll be in church so now they are ostensibly bringing it by tomorrow. I'm at this point ready to just say forget it and keep the stupid dog but my daughter has her heart set on it.
So...what do you think of this? Would you still take the dog if someone did this to you? Would you ever do this to a prospective family for your pet? It has really driven me nuts, I can tell you that! These folks already struck me as flaky and this has just added to that image.

Hello alaskanray
I hope that all works out for your family getting the pug, as I can see that your daughter's heart is set on it.
I wouldn't act like your friends and keep flip flopping on my word, especially when there is a child involved. It just seems cruel.
If they do bring the dog by tomorrow, I would take it, but I would be clear that it was there to stay. Well, no, I simply would take it. My taking it would communicate that it is permanent. If they asked for it back, I would say it's too late for that. My daughter is in love with the pug, and the pug is now a part of our family. Thanks.
Peace.

Yeah, I don't understand people who would offer a pet and then flip-flop like that. When I offer a pet, I feel duty bound to keep my word. I hope we can make this work, too.

Well, our pug has arrived at last! She is quite the chubby little thing and almost followed the family out the door when they left. Of course, our cats are freaked out by this strange creature we have brought into our home.
Misty is on the front porch and refusing to enter the house. I don't know where Chester has gotten off to. Oh, well! The joys of motherhood!

Yah, Brie is finally here. Now we just have to get the cats to adjust and accept her presence in our home. Oh joy, Oh rapture!

Don'cha hate that? This is one of my pet peeves with people, the being unreliable. I like to know what to count on and what to expect. I hate when people keep me waiting when I'm giving them rides, too. I had an acquaintance one time who would ask for a ride to a dance, then keep me waiting for half an hour after I arrived at the appointed time. I mean, my time is precious to me, too, you know.

I always thought they were so cute! Still do, but I like softer fur on my dogs and can't stand to have one that barks so if and when we ever get a dog I think we'll opt for a basenji.

Glad you have it already, yes just make sure it's no more taking back
, it's gonna hurt more now that it's there and you are in love with it, it might also cause a permanent rift with the giver. I agree with you friend, make sure you really want to part with something before you offer to give it away to anybody otherwise it would affect your credibility.

Well, in a queer twist of events, it turned out that the trailer park we live in only allows two pets per resident. My daughter was bummed at first but once we returned the dog, she was glad...she decided she's a cat person, after all. The dog sheds a lot and was barking every time someone walked by or drove by. Drove me nuts. Oh, well. Someday we'll be out of the trailer park and can have all the animals we want...without worrying about bothering the neighbors.

Thanks, kiddo. I do hope that we can move out of the park soon. I'm afraid it's going to be a few years yet, though. Until then we'll just have to grin and bear it.
