User upper

What a wonderful user upper bread pudding is. It does not take long to do and uses only things most food cupboards contain anyway. My wife and I had to make some sandwiches for a small event. We decided the sandwiches were going to be smart with the crusts trimmed. This meant there were lots of crusts to be wasted or used, bread pudding used them up with a few wholesome additions.

I love bread pudding... Sometimes a loaf of bread can last for days in my house and no one would touch it as my kids only want fresh bread. Even if the bread is a bit stale, once we turn it into bread pudding, it will be gone almost as soon as it is out of the oven. Bread pudding is great at winter time as it is here now

Have you tried any of the many variations on the humble bread pudding, some add pecan nuts or marmalade.

Like the idea of using dates, do you chop them or keep whole. Date and walnut together sounds like it could be a good combination, can just imagine eating that right now. Great thing about bread pudding is quantities don't matter too much and lends itself to experimentation.

Yes, I have. Most of the time I only do simple ones with sultanas or dates since I'd only be using whatever ingredients I have at the time. I've found recipes for fancier ones which I'd love to try one of these days...

I wish my family liked bread pudding, but you are right, it is good to use up whatever we can rather than waste it. I like that you could make your sandwiches special and yet not waste the crusts. I would have put them in a food processor and ground them to crumbs for making things like meatloaf. I hate to waste food.

Bread pudding has lots of nutrition and it does not have to be overly sweet either.

The meatloaf idea is great also. The waste from making of the sandwiches was not that expensive and using it up with a pudding that is not over the top in terms of calories was great.

How true Gerty and so easy to vary by adding a few nuts. Almost a balanced meal.

Oh my word, that certainly takes me back. I think our bread and butter pudding is the same thing...a yummy dish AND a way of using up stale bread. It's winter here and you have given me an idea for something delicious over the weekend...one problem though...no stale bread.

Not quite the same thing but very nice and light served hot with custard or ice cream. Best if the bread is not stale.

I've never had bread pudding but love the idea of using the bread crusts like that instead of throwing them out. I've had rice pudding (which I love) but never bread pudding. How do you make it? I'd love to try it.

As we are not allowed to put recipes here I will send you a message but I can tell you that the basic recipe only uses bread, sultanas, milk, eggs, sugar and cinnamon. You can alter to suit yourself with additions such as vanilla and pecan nuts. Only drawback is the 45 - 60 minute cooking time. There are many exotic variations if you search using Mylot search.

Hi Telmesh, i never tried eating bread pudding yet. But, it sounds delicious to me. Maybe, i will give it a try in the future when i have lots of bread crusts left unused. By the way, can you share with me your bread pudding through pm? I would like to give it a try. And hope my family will like this new recipe.

Hope you have found the pm containing the recipe and will get the chance to try soon. Next time I do it I will try adding a few walnuts for a little twist.

Yeah, bread pudding is an excellent way to put extra crusts to good use . There actually another haven't tried it myself but I saw someone do it and it looked pretty easy , and he told me it was very easy I didn't actually see him make it but I made sort of a sweet snack by applying a little shortening to them and then coated with sugar and sizzled the whole thing on a pan or alternatively vegetable oil could be used in the whole process but that would change the taste to a great extent . If you have one of those crisp plates for a microwave using less fatty stuff if you're health conscious you could also use low calorie sugar. but it has to granulated because the uneven melting of the granules is creates a pleasant crisp.

Thanks for another idea. We use granulated sugar on the bread pudding for the last 10 minutes of cooking time for that sweet crunchy topping.
