I'm a young 55 years old woman and I feel watching TV today is horrible experience. The Cable channels have nothing but garbage on. All of these stupid reality shows which will make your brain mush if you watch them. I can't believe that after all of these years the reality shows still keep popping up with more garbage. No need for any talent at all. The actresses and actors of yesteryear are problably roling in their graves. How can they continue to put on the Dance mom and Teen mom, tots and tiaras, the housewives from hell etc.... I don't understand how there can be so many stupid people out there watching these so call "shows." Do you admit to watching these horrible shows or are you like me and want smart quality TV back?

Hello lelin1123
I haven't had television in about five years. I haven't missed it, either. Every once in a while I'll be at someone's house, or in a public place with the television programming, and I see what they are watching and I'm just surprised that anyone finds this entertaining.
I usually watch the DVD movie or documentary.
Recently, I did start streaming video over my internet because I learned that there are lots of documentaries that I can see in this way.

I really hope that Puerto Rico gets Netflix soon. I use to have it when I lived in New Mexico. Its great to watch a movie at anytime especially with all the selections you can get.

I haven't missed it either. I rarely watch it. No channel flipping for me anymore. I put it on, watch what I want then either turn it off of switch to Netflix. Like right now, I'm on the computer but I'm watching a documentary on Susan Boyle over my shoulder on television. I would cancel my satellite t.v. if it wasn't for my kids.

Oh, the documentary is on Netflix, have you seen how many they have? Tons. I spend enough time on the computer my eyes couldn't take watching movies on it. I'm trying to get through at least two a day. Susan now then I'm going to watch one on John Lennon's killer, then one called for the bible tells me so.

Television quality has plummeted especially disgusting channels like adult swim. My kid was watching some guy eat a banana yesterday. Then they harassed some lady on the street in a frog suit. They were holding thought balloons above their heads like, "I don't wipe." This is funny? This get's someone paid? If I presented that to a channel as a premise I would have been thrown out and the cops would have been called.
This is why I got streaming television. I pay Netflix 7 bucks a month. They even have television shows on there I like, newer and older. I bought a streaming box which also has other things on it like Netflix. I wish I had all the years of my life back I spent watching commercials and junk. The only thing I watch is Doctor oz, the news, showtime, Stars and a few reality shows like Bethenny ever after.

Hello ForSouls1234
We use the HuluPlus instead of the Netflix. We signed up for it because it said that we could watch the new episodes of Mad Men the day after they aired. Alas, that ended up not being true. Netflix also doesn't offer this for that show, so we have just remained with HuluPlus. It has tons of documentaries and we are currently watching all of the episodes of Monk, in order.
We may try Netflix at some point, but for now we have more than enough to watch whenever we watch television.

Doesn't surprise me about it not being true. I checked that out and they didn't have anywhere near what Netflix does in my opinion. You should definitely check out Netflix someday, you can't see what they have until you become an actual member. Then you can browse.
Oh and I looked, they do have mad men available right now for streaming or mail D.v.d., this streams to your computer or your television. I doubt you can see the episode aired the night before anywhere on the computer unless someone tapes it and uploads it to you tube.

O.k. I looked again, they have seasons one to four of mad men. From 2007 to 2010. They add new stuff all the time and if they don't have the current ones they may not be available to license for D.V.D. yet. They also have Monk for streaming and disc by mail seasons one to eight.

Hi. I'm 10 years your junior and I totally understand what you mean!Back in the day, there were dramas, not nighttime so called soaps. There were comedies with messages, not so called sit coms. And , if you wanted some culture, PBS would air operas and plays . Plays , not just lame documentaries! You know why there has been a huge turn? Money and " taste" and the Key audience. back in the day the owners of the big 3 channels were like the Movie producers of old, independent thinkers who went by their gut. That is why All In The Family and Maude even made it on air. No suit these days would Ever ok the pilot. These days there is no one man on top. The channels are owner by corporations and there is a committee who try to decide what people want to see . And then they will give it to them. And back then it was certain time slots for groups. daytime for the housewife , early evening for family , later men and couples. That is why Soaps were on in the day, light comedies and quiz shows in the evening and then the heavy drams at 10pm. But that changed with Dallas and Dynasty. Two of my faves . But that is when soaps took over primetime. Then the reality show took off and here we are. I must confess I do have my faves of reality shows but do I think there are Way too many? Yes. See without any imagination at the top, Or the freedom to go for it, the suits will just keep copying and copying. I take solace in the History channel and BBC America and in movie channels.

Hey, I do have a life, lol! I see Jesrsy Shore For the drinking and having fun and the cute pranks they play , not the fighting. And Like a soap I have my favorite housewife so I watch for her. But I also will And Did watch The Hatfields and MCCoys mini series. And I will see documentaries too!So I'm well rounded, Lol. In shape and in my t.v. viewership!

You are so right on all counts. I truly believe the guys in the suits have become so lazy with no imagination at all. They only care about the money they are making on the stupidity of people and their mindset. People who watch Jersey Shore or any of the Housewives shows to me have no life. They are watching a bunch of people treating each other so nasty. People drinking, getting drunk and fist fighting. Is that really entertainment? Not in my book.

Exactly, there are to many more reality shows then scripted shows. I don't mind the American Idol or Dancing with the Stars type shows. My problem is with the shows that just show a bunch of people acting like idiots and thinking its ok. Such as, Jersey Shore and all of the Housewives of anywhere. Then you have Dance Mom and Tots and tiara (i think thats the name of the show) which to me exploits little girls and its just so wrong on so many levels.

I agree with you. I miss the older shows that actually had substance and kept you hanging on. I do not watch reality shows of any kind. I usually keep on Netflix and Amazon Prime and watch the older classic movies.

Oh I love the old classics. That is when a movie was a movie. The talent was great and the story was so interesting. That is why I love TCM or AMC they show great old movies.

Oh, I'm with you. I always love my horror movies but it seems like in the summer I get craving for old nostalgia. I watched a lot of old movies this week since the weather warmed up, Tam Lin, The Bells of st Mary's, The trouble with Angels and a lot of Abbot and Costello. I even watched some Twilight Zone's last night before bed.
I am trying to introduce my son to the old comedic geniuses. His idea of humor is rather too ten year old, ugh like Family Guy. Now I like that show but I have to educate this kid to the greats.

I keep seeing the shows you mentioned among the shows available in our cable channel but I just don't watch them. Just be optimistic and look at the bright side, it's cable so there's more or less a hundred more channel to turn to when there are few garbage show currently airing. There's discovery, national geographic, to name a few.

I can never find much that is good to watch. Most of the shows are plain stupid. I don't know how they stay on.

I don't understand it either. There must be alot of people out there watching these stupid shows because if they weren't the shows would be cancelled. Meanwhile shows that have great scriptwriting and wonderful actors gets cancelled to put on garbage.

Lucky me, my television is only hooked up to a digital converter box. I would not watch that stuff even if I could get it.I agree that it is pretty mindless. I do like real shows, however. Things like "The Doctors" and things on the History Channel and HGTV

Yes the Doctors is a good show because you are learning from it. Also with the History Channel and HGTV you learn things so your mind is working. However, on the reality shows its all garbage and just people fighting, yelling, doing just horrible things to each other. Who needs to see that on TV. I won't waste a minute of my time on this. I don't really understand how the people would continue to watch it because if they weren't watching the shows they would have been canceled by now. So there must be alot of mindless lazy people laying around on their couches watching this stupidity.

I have found its easier to record what is on and watch when its a better time for me. For example, one poster mentioned Dr Oz, which is a well done show. You really can learn a lot while watching. I have seen a couple episodes of The Doctors, which is a talk show like Dr Oz.
You really can find quality shows on, but they tend to air when many people are working. Also I enjoy NCIS a top rated show, so many others are enjoying it also.

I love the Doctor Oz show but for some reason I don't get it here in Puerto Rico. You can learn something new in every show. I have to see if I can watch it online.

I don't watch any of them. Although I have cable, I only have the basic package which means just the regular networks and some local independent channels. I don't even get ESPN anymore although I do miss watching tennis on there. I like several of the shows that are on. Some of these are NCIS, The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Nikita, Bones, How I Met Your Mother, Revenge and several others. I don't even watch the reality shows that are on the regular networks.

I like NCIS and the Modern Family but these are good scripted shows. The reality shows are the ones that I think should be off the air for good.

I agree with you. I wondered when reality shows started why they even had an audience. I'll admit to one reality show--Extreme Makeover weight loss edition. I fast forward through most of it, stopping at the health and nutrition tips and seeing how the person is adjusting their attitude. It has really helped me in my battle with being overweight. Then I look at the ending results. I can watch the 2 hour show in about 15 minutes and I get knowledge and encouragement from it.
Other than that, I don't see the draw of the average reality show like Jersey Shore (my son loves it because they are so stupid) or Ozzy Osbourne's show if it's still on. I don't like to see people fight or cry or argue and I certainly don't want to be in on some of their emotionally intimate moments. I have enough strife in my life without indulging in someone else's.
I think we have a lot of voyeurs in this nation because people are so dissatisfied with their own lives and are too lazy to do anything about it so they watch others.

Wonderful response and so true on all counts. Extreme makeovers for me is not bad because its helping people to lose weight. I'm more upset with so call shows like Jersey Shore, The kardasians, Teen mom and all of the housewives of wherever. They are useless shows with no reason to be on TV in my opinion.

hehehe hello young old women,it was very nice to discuss with that kind of enthusiastic women, any thing if that have their positive points then obviously that having their negative points too,so if tv is helping us to gain something then obviously sometime that will waste our time too.
