People Are No Longer Reading Enough.

It is a fact that many people, especially children, are not reading enough these days.Modern technology is the main cause of this. With television, cellphones and gaming being in the fore front of all this.Another cause could be that school teaching methods have changed drastically.Parents also have a responsibility of nurturing a love of reading in their children. In our community when I was a child, children were rebuked when found reading comic books, the well worn cliche being "Stop reading that rubbish or you will develop a bad way of speaking" this is a negative way of putting it as comics can be a springboard to reading other books. May I speak for myself, comics were the first type of reading matter that I started reading, it instilled in me a love of reading that is still with me today.I eventually graduated to reading text books of all kinds, historical, technical and many others. What I say to Parents,Teachers, and Guardians is,do not stop children from reading anything that is good, clean and harmless.Monitor them by all means, check that it is good material, and then encourage them to read.

That is really just the sad truth of it all to say the very least. I consider myself very blessed that my parents rather put a love of reading right into my mind at such a young age. You really do have to start children young in their love of reading and it is rather just something that can start. I started young and it rather kept reading.
The real problem is many children do not read, because many adults around them do not like to read. There are times where adults cannot properly encourage a love of reading in their children, because they are not going to really like to read. It is sad that many parents have to find that love of reading in themselves. It ends up being a vicious and never ending cycle.

Books are becoming less essential in today's society. Innovators are attempting to upload various works online for online reading but I'm afraid this will do nothing to increase the amount of literacy we have amongst people. I do not read myself, personally, I hate to get warm and snug and cuddle with a good book. Apparently, the people of today feel the same so I have no problem with the decline in book reading. I'm sorry but books suck.

i don't think that is necessarily true. both my daughters love reading. i started them reading at an early age and now that they are teenagers, they still love to read. it all depends on the parents. they need to instill a love of reading but if the parents don't like to read, then why would the child? my hubby hates reading which is too bad because he is missing out on so much. books can be magical!

The reality is that advancement in technology has affected the quality of modern education. Nowadays, there is every information that student need in the internet that most of them do not even take time to really comprehend what they find on the internet. The quality of education has been really compromised in certain ways.

Sometimes I also think about that. And then I see that they still like to read and write, even on the mobile and computer:)

I completely agree with you here, and I have to admit that I find it rather sad that there are so few people who are choosing to read these days. The worrying thing is that people are no longer encouraging their children to read, and this means that they're just not learning to love books in the same way as we might have done in the past. Schools should set reading as homework a lot more, as this means that the children have to do it and will hopefully learn that they can enjoy reading about unknown worlds that have been dreamed up in the minds of writers.

Yes my friend, i also noticed that with children. They are not into reading anymore, because they have their PSPs and other video games.
Like you, i love reading those comics also, specially the Tagalog ones. We would rent them everyday because we read those that are with "to be continued" My father would torn them all and our mother , who is the most lover of those comics would pay them all. And she would rent again and we will read it in our locked bedrooms. And also our father bought us English comics instead. We also loved them.
My love for reading helped me enrich my vocabulary in English and a lot of varied knowledge.
But now, it seems that i too, have no time to read anymore, because of Mylot and TV soaps.

It is a huge problem these days. When I was in school they encouraged it heavily, in some cases required it. I had such a love for reading. Lately I have been more focused on movies and tv. I think because it is easier and lazier. It definatly needs to be instilled in youth.

I agree, Jungle. o-o I, too, don't read as much as I used too :s When I read something, I'll read it at a normal pace, then skim through. (Most likely if something takes too long to read. Dx )
