Eating Habits

I have been struggling to lose 10lbs for a while now. Not a large amount, but it is a very stubborn 10lbs that wants to keep hanging around. However, I discovered something the other day that may be part of my problem. I eat when I'm not hungry sometimes. Not all the time, but under some circumstances I do and it is a hard habit to break.
For instance, I noticed that I sometimes eat when I'm bored, not because I'm hungry. Another thing I do is eat to be social. The other day I had already had my breakfast and morning coffee, which was more like brunch cause I'm a late sleeper, and I didn't plan on eating again before I went to work at 3pm. However, my husband had not eaten yet and suggested we go out for lunch before I had to go to work. I don't get much time with my husband as he works days, usually 8-4 and I work 3-11 evenings so I went out for lunch with him even though I wasn't hungry.
Do you eat when you're not hungry?

With the kind of lifestyle we all lead it is well nigh impossible to maintaain discipline when it comes to one's eating habits. But there is a solution. You have to, I repeat, you have to have regular exercise whether you break your eating rules or not. This will take care of whatever 'sins' you may have committed in this field. A walk every morning for about 20 minutes would all that would be required.
Good Luck Sue

Well if you eat out of boredom, then stop it. also don't eat at night just before bed. That will not help you. And what you eat is important also. Too many carbs are what puts the weight on you as well as sugar. And to help you lose weight quicker, walking or running or jogging will help. I prefer walking. If you eat three meals a day, and I don't mean lots and lots of food, you will be fine. I know it takes some time to start losing. And drink lots of water. That will help curb your appetite.

Lots of people that are eaters, as am I, eat from stress. You know, comfort food. But we do have to change out habits. Also when we do have a meal, we are not supposed to eat until we are full. In between meals try drinking some water, or some sugar free ice sea or lemonade. Or buy some sugar free ice pops. But do on over do it. My girl keeps complaining but she continues to eat the same way everyday and all night long. So while she gets fatter I will lose weight.

Yes, i do eat too, even when i am not hungry.
Like when my husband eats some snacks hours after dinner , i too would be tempted to eat even if i am a bit full yet.
Though i am already at 121 pounds from the 105 pounds i was since the Christmas season. Maybe it's because, i eat very much lesser rice and now that i am just at home for my 2 months leave at work, i don't take a snack. Just lots of water every now and then.

I have a good habit of eating, i think. I take 3 main meals a day only and just have meals at fixed time...no sooner or later. I think it is a reason why my weight is maintained for long time.
Sometime, if i feel hungry in the afternoon, i will drink milk but not much...because i don't want to give up my dinner.

I used to. But not anymore. I changed the way I eat. I cut out junk food which eliminates a surge in insulin. I learned it is those insulin drops that cause hunger. I never believed it until I cut out meat, because of the hormones and processed sugar.
The only kind of sugar I eat now is natural sugar in fruit. I have no more hunger spikes and crashes.

Right but a lot of this impulse eating is physical not psychological I learned. When we eat a lot of sugar there is an insulin spike then there is a crash. It might not be as much your fault as you seem to think. It might just be what you are eating. Try to cut down on your sugar.

It is a hard habit to break and I think a lot of people eat when they are bored! I try to eat 5 meals a day. Breakfast, lunch dinner and 2 healthy snacks. So far this year I have lost 35 pounds. I excercise 4 times a week and I am feeling good about myself! It was time for me to get healthy in life because I am good at yo-yo dieting where I lose 10 pounds slack off then gain 15 and so on... I needed to get healthy for me!

Congrats on losing the 35 lbs! I don't need to lose that much but I would definitely like to lose 10 or 15 lbs. I'm actually trying to cut down on the junk food by not buying as much of it. It's true, you do feel better about yourself when you accomplish you weight goal.

i have lost a bit of weight and if i am bored or a little hungry, i take a big drink of water first and that usually is enough. sometimes it is hard to get out of the idea of eating! its easy to do when you are watching tv, working on the computer or reading. i have hobbies to do when i feel bored so that stops me from eating.

Hi, I have spent the best part of a year getting a stone off ,it is off and staying off.I used to be a comfort eater lonely eater. My husband works long hours and found myself bored sick and out would come the cakes ect.I was really strict with myself ,smaller dinner plates, eat slowly.Walk three times a week for an hour a time or more.Eat porridge instant is fine, make up with milk and stick in microwave for a few minutes, fills you up for ages.Stop buying biscuits and cakes if you don't have them you cannot eat them.Grace on fruit, oranges with open you up and clear your bowl. That will shift a few pounds a day, sounds terrible but it works.exercise when possible.Dance around the lounge, jig while you are doing the ironing, borrow someones dog, there are loads of ways without going to the gym.Working those hours cannot help.Walk and swing your arms like a soldier that is another way of shifting it,it won't go overnight but after two weeks you should see a difference.I hope this helps.Lastly drink lots of water then you watch it fall away.

I have been making an effort to drink more water as I know for a fact that I don't drink enough of it. I'm also trying to buy more fruit (apples) and less junk food. I even bought some instant oatmeal for breakfast and you're right. It does really fill you up. That's what I eat before going to work now and it keeps me from eating from work as well. I guess I just have to be more disciplined!

I am morbidly obese and I need to lose weight! I have had a weight problem all my life but as I have gottan older I really have put on wieght! I suffer from mild depression and an an emotional eater. I will sometimes eat when I am bored, feel depressed and working in a kitchen doesn't help either! Now I need to lose weight and get my weight under control. I recently found out I have acid reflux disease. So I have to change some of my eating habits! I have been slow to do it but I will sooner or later! Gave up deep fryed food, sodas, stopped going to eat food restruants, expect for Subway and most fried foods. I really need to stop eating tomatoes, tomato sauce and oj! Just realizing that will bothers me! To much acid! I need to give up chocalte but have not! Cut back on it only! Very hard to do! Losing wieght sucks and so does acid relux disease!

Oh, this is really one of the hard habit to break.
I am also having the same problem.
It's been months since I wanted to lose some weight.
I can't stop and avoid eating even if I am not hungry.
I am trying my best not to gain more weight- so I drink a lot of water whenever I can to avoid eating too much and to avoid eating when I am not hungry.

Hello my friend, Suebee!!!
The last 10 lbs are very frustrating! I have lost a good 15 or so in the past year, as I had started working out a lot more. I know how it feels like such a big deal, because I have about 10 or so more to go. I do not eat when I become bored. I try to find other things to keep me occupied.
I think that if you set a daily routines or plan things to do for yourself, it may help. Maybe oyu should join a gym class? I am currently taking yoga classes. Yesterday was my first experience and it felt amaing! If you cannot do this, maybe get out of the house to visit friends. Art also helps too.
I have a ton of exercise videos and I love riding my bike. The kids and I go for rides during the day. I see you work a lot, but maybe on your lunch break you can take a health shake with you and walk around the building during lunch. It's just another idea to get more exercise. I also read that chewing gum or eating fruit helps a lot.
Well, I wish you the best of luck my friend on losing those last 10 lbs! I applaud you for having a healthy goal set!

Hello Jen! Well, I am not actually trying to lose weight, just the extra 10lbs I put on in the past 2 years or so. It is difficult for me to get into a routine as I work shift work and my so-called routines do not exist. I do go to a gym class (Curves) and try to get there 3x a week. I also have a yoga dvd that I sometimes do at home but never on a regular basis.
The one routine that I do have is for my supper break. I live close enough that I can come home to have supper with my husband, and yes, I eat with him at that time whether I am hungry or not! Therein lies one of my mistakes I think.
I also have a hula hoop which I try to use on the days that I don't make it to they gym. I am actually not a bad weight for my height and age. I just find that I look so much nicer and feel better about myself if I am minus about 10lbs.

Yes, I do o-o Most of the time, when I'm bored, I'll keep on eating on eating. xD I sometimes wonder why I eat when I'm not hungry and if it has something to do with being bored. I'll rarely eat again if there's delicious foods on the table. d:

Yes, eating when you are not hungry tends to make you fat.
Are you of the "thrifty" genotype by the way? About 45% of the general population is of this genotype, and they tend to put on weight more easily.
Have you heard of the ketogenic diet? Numerous scientific studies have shown that it is an effective way of losing weight, even without restricting calories (I know I will catch flak for this, but it is true. You cannot gain fat if your body is in "starvation" mode).

I have no idea if I am of the thrifty genotype. I've never heard of that before. I have heard of the ketogenic diet but I have never actually dieted to lose weight in my whole life. I have never been overweight and I think that's why carrying this extra little bit is so bothersome to me.

If you are conscious in not eating sweets and go for regular walks or do your exercises regularly, your weight will be under control. If you are past fifty you are bound to gain weight at this juncture. Eating when you are not hungry and skipping breakfast would add to your weight.

Well yes, I have tried to convince myself that my age has something to do with it. I am past 50 but also go the my exercise gym 3x a week. I am still at a healthy weight but just for myself I'd like to lose 10 pounds. It's definitely easier said than done!

I have learned since i also started to control my eating habits that being undisciplined contributes as to why i am also getting big... or gaining more. Like you when hubby eats i eat, now i still do that but i try my best to really moderate it, or if i eat with him, i try my best not to eat after wards.
when i am bored i also try my best not to eat when i know i am not hungry, i divert my attention to some other things, like i paint or read a book.
it is all in the mind my friend.

I have started doing the same thing. I still eat with hubby but tend to have smaller portions.
As for being bored, will if I read a book I eat while I'm reading! I agree with you though that it is all in the mind. Therefore I can change my habits and conquer these stubborn 10lbs.

Hi suebee
I have been told by my dietician that I should eat less than my capacity (in fact about 50% at a time) and have it many times a day
Wait, let me also mention that I am underweight (only 48 Kilos at 5 feet 11 inches and am 39 - that is why I keep telling I am a living skeleton) - and thins might have to do with my illness that I have since 2000.
Anyways, personally for your losing weight and eating many a times, I believe it is more about what you have on your menu rather than anything else. Also the personal metabolism and other medicines (if you take any) play a major role. Eating less and frequently might be a solution if your diet doesnt have a higher calorie intake and your metabolism uses those calories instead of saving them as fats for future use

Hi Suebee,
Yes, I sometimes eat when I'm not hungry. I understand eating in social situations because that's part of conforming to what everyone else is doing.
Eating can be a form of entertainment to keep people from being bored. I can sit in a theatre and watch a movie without popcorn and soda but those foods are part of the movie watching ritual for some folks.
Then there are people like me who have a family addiction to simple carbs. If we mess with our blood sugar sometimes we eat because we ride the glucose roller coaster where we never really feel balanced.
I've found that if I drink a lot of water, consume protein, healthy fat and complex carbs I feel best and I even begin to look healthier.

Well, I have been making a conscious effort to drink more water. I never used to like water so didn't drink it at all but concluded that I was dehydrated a lot of the time. Since I have started drinking water it has become my beverage of choice. Even when I go to a restaurant I order water to drink.
I totally agree with you on the movie theatre experience. I am one of those people who has to have popcorn as the smell of it drives me crazy if I don't. I am not even necessarily hungry, it's just part of what makes going to a theatre special. I don't eat popcorn if I watch a movie at home.

Hi friend, sad to hear about this and wish you to reduce the extra weight in the near soon. I am not interested in taking food while i am not hungry. Always i take the food while i am angry, as well as trying my best to reduce my weight and reduced it a little bit by taking salad in the break fast.
