but when I try I become very anxious and mean.
I have those fake cigaretts now, and some nicotine gum. I have only four actual cigaretts left. I made a promise to myself I would not buy anymore. This is it. I'm going to quit.
I need some encouragment and some patience from my friends.

You can do it! It is easy!
The best way to stop is to just not buy them anymore and keep a promise to yourself that you will not buy them anymore. This is how I gave up many years ago in a previous life! I just stopped buying them. It did take me six months to get to the stage where I had my last one as I had a few smoker friends who I would grab a smoke off every now and then, but after a while this got less and less and by the time I had my last one, it had been about a month or more since I had had one and the taste was awful. I immediately felt sick. So that was it. I knew at tat point that I was done and would never have another one.
Every cell in your body will thank you for not smoking. It may be tough initially but you will begin to feel better than ever after a short time.

It has only been a few hours. gonna have a puff off my fake cig. just so I can think straight.
Is there anything I can eat or use to cleanse out the toxins so this is not so terrible?

My sister quit and she noticed benefits very soon afterwards, almost immediately! I will pray for your success! I know it's one of the hardest things to do but the benefits are enormous!

Up until 5/6 years ago, I was a seriously heavy smoker, I found it helped with my anxiety problems but I forced myself for to quit for 2 reasons. Firstly my mother had a heart attack & smoking around her was not an option, secondly, the cost, I simply can't afford it any more. I had been smoking heavily for 25 years so if I can quit I have every faith that you can too.
& look, you managed to drag me out of hiding :)

I hesitated to respond because I haven't quit yet but figured I'd throw in my two cents.
My nephew recently gave me The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr. You can get it, used, on Amazon for a penny. By the time I finished the book (it took me 2 weeks because I wasn't truly committed) I realized I could quit but just didn't want to yet. But since I've read it I sometimes go for hours without smoking and don't think about it. That's progress I didn't expect!
The book is basically self-hypnosis and if I truly wanted to quit I would after reading this book. I don't have the motivation I did when my son was expecting a child but I'll be motivated when the house sells. Then I'll go through the book again.
Does that make sense? I'm recommending a book that didn't work for me but I know will work for others! Anyway, you could try it and I'm sure that if you truly want to quit, you will when you read through it. And you're supposed to smoke while you read, don't stop till you finish the book!

Sure it sounds awful, but it's true! I never mind someone addressing reality.
One thing that I keep thinking about is a point he made in that book--that we are not addicted to nicotine. If we were, we wouldn't be able to sleep for hours every night without waking up with a craving every couple of hours. And if you think about your reactions when you don't smoke, you don't have physical symptoms but only mental symptoms. It's all in your head! Thinking about that point about addiction tells me that when I truly want to quit, I will. At least I know I'm not addicted to anything, I just have a bad habit that I can give up any time I want with minimal trouble.

bottom = your backside you didn't get my joke.
I will try to think of it as you describe, a mental habit. But my physical symptoms are really pretty bad right now.

All advice is welcome. And in a way, it did work cause you know when you are ready, you will be able!!
It is like any of the 12 step programs are I guess...you are only ready to quit when you hit bottom. I hit bottom because of how my health is. I want to very badly be around for my grandkids. You will find your 'bottom' soon, lol. That sound awful...

Hi Debra! Yes, me too. I'm a smoker who has tried to quit in the past a few times, but I'm still smoking. I started when I was 15, and I'm 28 now, so it's been 13 years. I can't believe it's been that long. I looked back at a previous post I made when I was trying to quit smoking for the Great American Smoke-Out--and that was 3 years ago!!! I really need to try to get serious to just bite the bullet and quit. My husband smokes, as does my sister and my mom and best friend. I literally feel surrounded by it, which makes it hard. I don't think I'm quite ready to, but I do need to do it.
Good luck, and maybe you can cheer me on when my time comes. You can do it!

Sorry, with all the downtime and glitches I never got your notice.
I'm down to about five cigs a day. It's been hard, I've had a few bad days where I smoked more than I had planned. But it is getting easier to say no when the urge comes. I stay busy, I've been snacking more. lol Gained a few pounds and my blood sugar has been nuts. But, I feel like the end is in sight.
How are you doing?

Hello Debra,
Happy for you to take this decision. I know it is tough to quit but its is not impossible till you have strong will power. I have seen people too who quit it and again start it.Hope you won't and will leave this habit once and for all.

if there is a will there is a way. Keep up with your goals and be mindful of the negative effects of smoking for your body. I believe you can do this. Also. Remember that if others can. You can also quit

I would like to share with you something. I do smoke too. But the good thing with me I know when to stop. I can say that I am not really hooked with smoking. I just love the feeling of being able to smoke after a full meal or when drinking. But other than that, I really don't like it especially when someone is smoking near me.

I am 32 and have been smoking since I was 15!! I quit for 3 months once and was too weak and went back to it. I only missed it when I was out having a few drinks. I just witnessed a family member passing away from cancer last week and that is going to be my motivation too quit again and this time FOR GOOD!! I have one more pack yet and then I am done. I just have to be strong when I am out having some drinks!

don't go out until you are sure you can resist.
I quit drinking a while back, don't have that temptation.
I am cheering for you and your decision to quit, it is very difficult but very necessary!

You can do it Debra!! Just make sure that you are replacing it with something else. Like crochet, painting, reading or taking a walk....Do one every time you want to smoke.

Hello Debra, I congratulate you for your decision of quit smoking, I quit myself, almost a year ago, after trying in vain a couple of times also. Only one who has ever smoke, knows what you're going through now. You have some rough days ahead, in my experience, second day is harder than the first one, I guess that the body begins to miss the nicotine by second day, you can try with nicotine gum, I didnĀ“t because I hate that thing, but by fourth day on, you will stop thinking in smoking anymore. Other advise I could give you is to change your routine as well, specially those moments when you usually smoke, for instance, if you use to smoke while reading, well, for the next couple of days, try not to read, or, if you smoke while you are writing here, or when you are resting in your favourite couch, etc...do something else, is easier for your mind to cope with the situation if you change more than one thing in your routine, I guess.
Keep yourself busy, and avoid tension and stress. I wish you success in your strugle to quit smoking, blessings.

I never smoked in house, because of the children. So, I would only go outside when they were occupied or their parents were home to watch them. (3 yr. old can't be left alone)
The hardest one to give up is that first one in morning, at least right now-this morning I am thinking that.
The next one will be the one right after eating supper. I cannot give up eating...so I must find something else to do afterwards.

dear
My close uncle used to smoke but then quit.He did have the motivation from his family and my father. Its great that you are quiting! Just think of how happy your life will be when you quit.I will pray that you quit easily . Quiting is a fight and i know its hard to do.When you quit you save a lot of money!Think of the things you will be able to get with the money."a penny saved is a penny earned" . Keep fighting! You are doing great.

You can do it ^_^. Think that you can and you will be able to do it. Discipline and perseverance and a love for one's health will let you achieve it. I have seen and interacted with lots of smokers that eventually survived without it.
