Buying strange food at abroad! How do u select?

What do you do when you go abroad and want to buy some food at supermarket? You know that may brands that you buy usually do not exist and some strange food are over there. Several time I decided to be adventurous and try new food but those were awful and put them in garbage basket. What is your suggestion?
