Workplace Issues: Dealing with Boss

It's been a year since I was transferred to my present job but until now, I am still not comfortable dealing with our boss. Once in a while, he would visit our department and would complain bout so many things. He once told me that I should be using different cabinets for my file and this and that. I just smiled since I have nothing good to say. I know that answering back will not do any good either. I have already requested for new cabinets last year and it was rejected because of lack of budget so I do not know why he is telling me to change my cabinets if he was the one who disapproved my request. Then just this month, he visited our department again and saw this small teapot placed on top my cabinet. This teapot, requested by one of my seniors, will be used as sample for the souvenir items that will given to our clients. It is not like that I am using that and just placed that on top of my cabinet. He told me that it is a cabinet and was meant for files. It is not a refrigerator. I don't know how to respond to that sarcasm. I just smiled and told him that I can't just find another place to put that teapot. He got irritated by my answer and told me that if he finds another place for that teapot immediately he would fire me. I am a bit shocked but still manage to not take thing seriously. I didn't say anything. But honestly, I found that one too harsh. I almost cried after he left.
Have you experienced the same treatment from your boss?

I have not experienced this with my current boss. my current boss is very considerate and is not always acting upon all of us here at work. we have the liberty and freedom to do our work at our own pace - with targets and deadlines of course, but i would say she does handle us pretty well and professionally.
I have, however a former boss who was rather very hard to know what her thoughts are or what she wants from us, her direct reports. The thing is what i hate about her attitude is that when everything gets tough, and when she tells us to do something and then we do it and it is not what she wanted after all, she would then ask us to change what we did and then would even claim she did not ask us to do whatever it was we spent our time on. she has got to be kidding me!

Thank you for sharing. I know a boss who actually behave like that. You won't believe but we actually had an employee who only stayed with her for 3 days and did not report again. We post our vacancies every three months because no new employees could stand her. When I left that office, most of her staff are asking to be transferred to a different department.
Good to know that you no longer work for her. It would be very hard to work with that kind of boss. We will be so stressed everyday.

Personally, there are a lot of Bosses out there that can be Cruel and never think with some of the words they say, especially when they might tell you one thing, and then let someone else get away with the same thing they were trying to tell you not to do. It just happens, and it is frustrating, but sometimes getting up the nerve to ever say anything back only makes things worse, so maybe it your case it might just be Best to not say anything.

Thanks for your response. I know that if I answer back, I am just causing myself more trouble so I chose to keep my silence.

Jeez, wow it sounds like he is getting so upset over something so tiny! That seems really harsh to me, I don't blame you for being frustrated! I would have a hard time working for a boss like that honestly. If I were you I'd try not to take it personally, it sounds like he has his own issues! Hope things improve for you!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts hdc4free. I heard so many people talking about my boss and I knew some people who really do not like him because of his attitude towards us. When he got sick last month, people were hoping that he would finally retire. They are all wishing for early retirement. But he recovered and doing well now. And I am really hoping he would not visit us again although I know that it is quite impossible.
