What is Love and What is love making?

Time and again i heard people saying 'I love you' and some say ' Let's make love tonight'. What do we really mean when we say, we love someone. I am afraid we often mistaken our liking to one another to be love. On the other hand why should a couple claimingto love each other need to make love?
