My children like to study in the front of the television.
At the same time, they can watch the television.
I set up a full set of study furniture inside their room but it is hardly used by them.
I am really upset to them because I believe if they do their study at a right place, they can score better in their examinations.
Do you think my intention is right or not?

Each of us humans have different capability and different graphing capacity. Some children can do two things at the same time, but not studies. Doing their studies with other activities is very rare and some of them do so. I cannot do my studies by putting concentration on other things. So i used to put my full efforts to study matters during my study hours. If your child is doing good at his studies then it doesn't matter. If not you must correct him.
Every parent should give opportunity to their children to do their studies well. You should make sure that you are doing good for it and you had food a great job as a good parent.

Actually, when my children are studying, they like to turn the television at the same time.
This has become a bad habit to them. Presently, three of my children's grades are still above the average. Two of them are in high school and the youngest is at his final year of his grade school.
As a father to three of them does hope they can put in their full effort in their study so that, they will not regret later.
But, I am wondering if it will be better or worse for me to do so.

I think you should bring a change in them. As you mentioned that your child is an average one. Your child can do more when he put more efforts in his studies. So it is the time to put a change for him

I can't study when sit in front of TV. I don't think your kids can focus on study when take a seat in front of TV. Better you let them do study first and then watch TV later. My dad used to do like that. He didn't allow to turn TV on if we hadn't completed our study yet

For me, I definitely will slow down my studies or I totally lose my study mode if I turn on my television at the the same time. This is the exact problem you have too.
But my children like to do so in their studies even though I have prepared a quiet place for them to study. This alternative place is hardly to be used by them.
Since they can maintain their good grades at this moment, I shall not disturb them.
I am sure they will shift to the alternative place to study when they need it.

It's quite okay for your kids to study in front of ther television providing the show is a documentary on the subject they are studying...otherwise, they are not properly focused on their studies. Sorry Mum, you need to take charge and be the boss here.

ha! ha! I have talked to my children, they just want to have some noise so that, they can feel better at home.
May be, my home is really too quiet all of the while. But, I am sure they really need a quiet place later once they want to concentrate in their studies fully.

When I was in highschool, I used to study while listening to my favorite radio program. I was the second best in my class and had no interest whatsoever in becoming the one with best grades. Success is not only measured in grades and probably children are able to do a couple of things at the same time. Now, if grades are terrible, I`d cut TV xompletly until they change that (all depending on their learning abilities).

Your intentions are right. Definitively the concentration of your kids will be diverted when they watch TV.I am studying medicine and I went through how our brain works when it comes to memory and stuff. One of the most important thing in learning is that our full concentration is required to make a powerful memory of what we learn. For example,if we study a paragraph with 100 percent concentration and before the memory circuit completes(that is reading the paragraph twice or similar things),if we divert ourselves in other activities, this memory circuit is stopped and we have to learn from first to make the memory.Even the 50% we made from the first attempt will go to zero and thus increasing the time to make a memory.Of all the distractions, watching tv or some other visual stimuli diverts the brain more because brain responds more to visual perceptions. This finding they have applied to studying things in the form of videos or similar things.

Hi friend, good to know that you provide a great facility to your kids for their studies, but sorry to hear that they are not using it and interested in watching TV while studying it is really hard to concentrate in lessons, if they watched the TV while reading their lessons. I agree with you, if they read their lesson in a calm place without any diversions, surely they will score a good mark.

I don't know if this would work these days, but when I was a kid, we were not allowed to study in front of the TV, but had to go to our rooms. I did try is a few times, but my mother or father sent me to my room to study, so there was no real choice. It was a house rule in our family, and one that was never allowed to be broken. I also had to do piano practice every day, and that rule was upheld just as strongly. I can understand my parents doing this, because there was no point in them paying lots of money for piano lessons, if I wasn't going learn how to play for lack of practice. _Derek

It is a very good practice in your home.
But I do worry if I do the same, my children will have too much of pressure during their growing stage.
I never set any particular rules at my home. I do grumble them, to persuade them to watch less television programs and to study more at home.

I too never use the room that we have for doing paper work. It is the dining table that is always cluttered with papers and stuff. The room where paper work is supposed to be done is upstairs where one kind of feels lonely.

I've been studying for several years in front of the televisions m, listening music, I find my self more comfortable and keeping my attention on my things. On the other hand, sometimes I needto concentrate my self without any kind of sound or distraction, that would be depending if I'm studying for a class or a have the pressure from an exam no my back. I know the best is to find this place where you really see that is available to concentrate. Have a nice day!

I do understand that a place will affect our studies very much.
A quiet place can allow us to concentrate our study easily.
Since my children have started their bad habit to study when the television is on, I just have to accept, to observe and to advise them to change it gradually if it is necessary.

I study while there some loud music playing in the background. Loud music meaning that the volume is high, but the music that I play while studying is usually mellow, instrumental, or orchestra.
When I was still in college, people around me would really get mad at me because they can't study with the music that i'm playing, so what I do is listen with via earphones.
I have also a habit when I can't listen to music, I study and read in a moderate volume that is very irritating to those who like to study at zero noise.
Everybody has their own,way of studying, you just need to find the right one that suits them.

When I was schooling, I was not allowed to have such habit by listening music or by turning on my television at the same time when I was doing my study. I was scolded my parents because of such bad habit.
Because of this reason, I am very upset to my children in the way they study.
ha! ha! I shall adopt their habit as long as they show me the good grades in their studies.

I think you should set rules and limitations between watching TV and doing their study, so that they can be more focus. Setting up a study place on their room was a good idea but I think much better if they have study area far from their room or television so that they can be more concentrate on studying. You intention was right but need more to make it work. Most of the children nowadays loves to watch TV while studying which is not right because they more focus on watching than studying. Rules and limitations are good ideas for me to make your children to study well that they can only watch TV after finishing their homework and after reading their studies in this way you can help your children to study well at the same they will learned how to follow rules.

It is very hard for me to control them since the only two adults as my wife and myself are always not at home.
However, I always telephones them to find out their activities at homes.
Actually, the proper arrangement should be as what you are proposing. When the children are having too much of freedom, then they will do their studies in the way they wish. This is the problem my children have now. Anyway, I still can accept their studies habit if they can maintain good grades in their examinations.

First of all see his progress report, if it is going to be better. It has no matter, which place he is using for study else, you have some worry about your child.

I also had the habit of studying while watching television. But this habit didn't affect my study anyway. I always scored good marks in exam. Even I could concentrate more on studies while watching television. Each and everyone has different capabilities. You need not worry about your children. Leave them in their own way. But just tell them that they can watch television anytime and also study while watching. Also tell them that they should score high marks in exams also. They will surely study well and score high marks. Don't compell them to study always. Give them time to play also. Even you can also play with them. Always be a friend to your children.

I was having the same philosophy as you earlier.
After reading an article, I was told that a quiet environment can allow us to concentrate our study better and I started to query myself if I should change the habit of my children in their studies.
I am also worrying the change can make them worse too.
Anyhow, a better studying place has been prepared for them to use if they want to.

Make their room and furniture more interesting. Aside from the usual books and supplies, try to funk it up. I can't say something specific since I really don't know what your kids would like. I would put a small aquarium inside their room, having turtles that sure will distract them from time to time, but I would rather want them to be distracted with curiosity rather than tv crap :).

It is a very good ideal hansvmobile.
If there is enough room for me to place a small aquarium, for sure I shall do so to make the room to be more alive.
At this moment, I just managed to squeeze in few bookshelves. studying tables with table lamps and chairs inside their room.

Yes, you are right. We need to spend a lot of times to accompany and to grow our children.
I understand that they are having bad habit presently. As such, I prepared an alternative place for them to study if they w2nat to.
Presently, they still can manage their studies and I shall not restrict and disturb them too much.
