My Little Brother Makes Me Feel Old

I adore my little brother, some might say because I partially raised him until he was seven. I was young too, but at the time neither of our parents were around much. After that we were separated, I went to live with Grandma in another state, and he stayed with our father, who was then just beginning AA.
We stayed in touch through the years over the phone, snail mail, and eventually the internet. And finally about two years ago, due to problems I was having I went to live with him and our father for about a year. And he was a totally different person than he had been through our communications. He was a foul mouthed, almost verbally abusive teenager. I've noticed this about a lot of teenagers, and I would scold him when he acted like that towards me. And while I was there I noticed a lot of teens act like that, I'm only about five years older than him, but I would have never acted like that when I was a teenager (or even now). He actually told me "You just don't understand because you're an adult." Now I know this is normal teen behavior - well, the part about feeling misunderstood. Most of us have been there but that combined with the fact next year he'll be graduating high school has made me feel old. It seems like forever ago since I was his age. I know a lot has happened in my life but it seems like so much longer than five years ago when I was getting ready to turn eighteen.

I know how you feel about this, because my younger brother left school yesterday, and I have to say that it doesn't feel like more than a couple of minutes since I did the same thing. I can remember exactly how I felt on that day, and the things that we did, and it was amazing. But to know that my younger brother who is a good few years younger than me is now doing the same is just unnerving. He is starting his A Levels in September and, in my mind, that is the stage of my life that I am still at, even though I have since gone and got a degree in Psychology, and am now working full time as a writer.
