Cumbrians At A Buffet = Pigs Round A Trough

As you know I live in Cumbria, a large county in England that is next to the country I used to live in, Lancashire. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are MANY greedy people from Lancashire who would resemble Pigs Round A Trough if they were at a buffet BUT.. Cumbrians are something else. The reason for this is their unhealthy appetite for nibbles, pastry and meat products - basically anything that is bad for us, which is why they absolutely love buffets, especially ones they don't have to pay for. Do you know what I mean? Have you seen people (usually, but not always, men) behaving like Pigs Round A Trough at buffets? I remember one year being in a hotel in Calella, Spain and a German guy would have 3 huge helpings of shredded beetroot on his plate every morning. Not a welcome sight when me and my friend Caroline were hung-over from the night before.

It really is the same anywhere. I should talk. I used to be especially bad about over eating at buffets, but I have cut out about two thirds of what I normally would put on my plate. I eat quite a bit at home as well. Trying to do better but it is hard. I do know what you are talking about though and you can seee people who can barely waddle over filling their plates. Nice reminder to me to take a bite or two of the things I like and not the whole container.

I have found that alfredo sauces in a restaurant do tend to make me ill. Too rich. Eskimo, I think you are the first person I have met who has said allergies are lucky. I love yummy food, whether I prepare it or someone else does.

I'm lucky in that I can't eat much of the food available at buffets anyway. I don't eat anything with wings (eg chicken, turkey) except midges - in Scotland it's compulsory [em]rofl[/ em]. I'm also allergic to milk and some milk products so that removes a lot of fattening cream products as well, and I just don't like soup or anything spicy, so not a lot actually left for me to eat.

Wow, Eskimo, I'm amazed you can find anything to eat on a daily basis, never mind at buffets! Poor you! As for you GardenGerty, you're so sweet. I bet you're not half as bad as you say you are with food..and even if you are, you're forgiven, so there.

hello janey! ugh, the idea of just one small helping of shredded beetroot is turning my stomach at this very moment! yes, i have absolutely seen people going crazy at a buffet! i am from the american south where eating is pretty much everything! and at every meeting or event, there is always food/buffets served! people can be quite rude about this sort of thing...but i have to admit that i really like nibbles, particularly posh nibbles...

Some people can go all wide-eyed and silly seeing a load of food laid out in front of them. Instead of pacing themselves they have to eat it all at once - usually on one plate!

I've been to Cumbria many times (usually Lake District), but not actually taken part in one of these Buffets. They sound absolutely wonderful (apart from being a pig of course!!) Free food - bring it on! Shredded beetroot sounds disgusting though.

Especially when he went back for a total of 3 helpings. I'd be throwing up!

WARNING/DISCLAIMER: This response is not for the faint hearted. If you have a weak stomach, move on. One of my exes and I were at a smorgasbord one time and he went nuts. He filled his plate high, several times and still hadn't tried everything. Shortly after, I saw him with yet another plate piled high. I asked him how he was managing to eat so much and he said he had gone to to the men's room, made himself throw up then come back for more. I believe that is the definition of gluttony.

Yes, I think you could be right there! No idea guys could throw up like that, I always thought it was a "woman" thing and the guys did it because they drank too much. My eyes have been opened my friend!

I live in Somerset and I used to live in Kent. I remember a vacation with my mom to St Lucia in the Caribbean. There was a buffet lunch on a days outing that we went on. |We sat at a table for four opposite a British couple. To begin with their plates were over flowing. The windows were open and insects were flying around. My mom and I thought they are never going to eat all that. Amazingly they did and they had seconds. It made me feel sick the quick and desperate way that they ate. It was a yucky experience I won't ever forget.

Sounds like my experiences with the Cumbrians. They are big meat-eaters and will say that something is yummy when it clearly is not (easily pleased) whereas I will complain if I get ripped off. I really don't know why some people have to eat like it's their last meal or something.

I am surprised to learn that there are so many big eaters in the world. They must have been doing hard physical work, otherwise they could be dyspeptic.

I have not seen this so I am not sure what it looks like. I do however see different buffets. I think that they are not very healthy as they promote over eating. People have a certain amount that it acceptable to eat at one sitting. I cant imagine the amount of calories that come along with this type of eating!! I have eaten at a few Chinese buffets, and in those sittings I have selected the healthier foods. And found them to be beneficial in helping me to sample different foods.

Yes, trying different foods, I like that idea too. I've seen those free salad bars as well (usually at pizza parlours) but, ordinarily, someone has to buy a massive pizza to qualify which defeats the object of eating a healthier side dish!

We have a buffet restaurant here in town and I try not to look at what the people are eating when I go there but sometimes I can't help noticing the overly piled high plates some of the people are carrying. Most of the people that go there are over weight and I don't just mean a little. I feel really skinny when I go there because I am usually the thinnest adult there. The kids like to go there sometimes so I indulge them on occasion. I try not to stuff myself though.

I suppose kids can get away with it because they are still growing. Adults can't though.
