Do you think humans are born good or evil?

Good and Evil are just used as blanket generalized terms in this discussion.
I pose this question because of a lot of my personal studies. Do you think that people are born 'good', and have to work to keep from being corrupted by the world? Or do you think that we're born 'evil' and have to work our way into being 'good'? Why do you believe this?

How can anyone be born a certain way? A baby can't be evil or good, just an innocent little child. I hate when people say we are born good or evil or gay or strait, a baby isn't born anything but male or female.

Male or female, and human. lol Sorry, I couldn't resist a little humor even on a topic that I consider to be a serious subject matter.
Then is I may ask do you believe the path the child ends up taking in life is from what the child experiences? Like Nature Vs. Nurture?

The truth is we are all born evil or imperfect upon conception. We inherited a sin from our first our first parents, adam and eve.. so if you can notice man are inclined to do bad things. So we always need to do our best to fight for our own imperfections or be good coz it is against our own inclinations. Even if we desire to do good sometimes we do the bad things.

I agree with you on the fact that sometimes good people will do bad things. I disagree with it being because of original sin. Original sin was a design by the church to explain many things, but also to oppress people and a way to put women into a negative light, making them into evil, sinful creatures. Women are the bearers of life, not the workers of the devil.

Hi Syramoon,
I am sure from your personal studies, you have figured that there is pyschological and scientific studies that have been done by others than support both 'nature' and 'nurture'.
This is an arguement that will probably continue for decades.
Scientific studies have shown that known pyschopaths have an under-developed part of the brain that processes emotions, what links us to other people, what allows us to empathise and feel others pain.
An of course, we all know the risks of our children playing on violent computer games... it can condition and numb them.
I believe that both can be the case and that neither 'nature' nor 'nurture' wins the debate but that both can contribute to a dangerous individual.

Hey Georgina,
I have came across both sides of the argument. And even some religions that say were born in sin, and have to work to be good, and vice versa. So I was just curious as to what my fellow mylotters thought. I seem to be a middle of the road person on the matter.

I don't believe in evil as a force, but some people do evil things. Whether I'm right or wrong, I'm also a great believer in nurture rather than nature in that our blueprint for how we're going to turn out in life is more or less set by age 2 or 3, and created by our carers and the environment they raise us in. I think very young children absorb and are influenced, whether positively or negatively, by so much more than we give them credit for.

I believe it has to do with your wiring. And I believe it is innate. A child has not lived yet, he can only do naughty things, but if it is innate, when he is older like seven or eight he might be triggered and hurts an animal. That is how evil starts.

This is a big one Syramoon. I guess only a psychiatrist can answer this. But killing animals is one of the signs that there might be something going on with your child. Children love animals. When you have the capability and the heart to do this as an 8 year old, it must surely be investigated.

I agree. I don't have any children, and have never known a child that has done this. I was just wondering on both a psychiatric and spiritual level what others thought on the subject. And if my eight year old did something like that, they would be getting immediate medical care.

How can we say that humans are free and is any meaningful creature, Good and evil are purely subjective ideas imposed upon us by society (someone had to say it) I say this, because I believe ideas of good and evil vary between people, and that no objective scale can be made; you could say that everyone is good by redefining what is evil, and I believe evil could be done the same way, there is no way to say what is absolutely good: I for instance believe that the existence of government is evil, in that it oppresses freedom, which I deem to be the highest goal to achieve. I also think that it is wrong to give to a charity if it doesn't directly benefit you, and that the self comes first. I am certain that there is no divine reward at the end of things. That stem cell research is 'good' in that it benefits people as a whole and through them, myself. I think my thinking altruistically is evil, in that it benefits neither person, and try to change myself to not think as such. I think this because I am alive and where I am today purely through my strength of character, and that relying on others for support that I could provide myself would weaken me, and them by taking their time and energy. I believe there are some people who are not troubled by ideas of good and evil, that they seem unnecessary to them, I think most religious people are evil for thinking with a closed mind, by insisting that you take their beliefs on their terms but at the same time refusing to reciprocate. I believe that holy books are evil in that they can be used as a tool to manipulate and steal freedom from those who fear this freedom, and then would use the majority to compel minorities into following suit. You asked what I think, there you have it. Oh, also I disbelieve that there is a soul, since it by definition defies any physical manifestation, making it a meaningless concept, but hey ho, each to their own.

You are talking to a person who thought I was evil from age 7 til? A few years ago! As a soap opera watcher I know a person can be one and turn into another! Are there real people who are born good? Yes. Are there people who are born bad? Maybe. But I think they were nice at first and then they were screwed over and they Become evil. But then again A good person can become good and there is hope an evil person can become good. So I guess my answer is yes!

I believe we are born to be good and partially evil. If the world surrounded by good people life could be boring, we never learn from our mistakes and from others mistakes. We slowly develop and find our self trough others contribution of mistakes. We become challenge and pursue life. With no obstacle we might not live as happy now. Good and Bad people play a big part in this world.

Hi,
Very interesting question. It made me ponder.I do not think humans are born evil.Rather they are born neutral with neither goodness or evil in them.In my opinion, they learn from their parents and also from everything they see around them. The way they are nurtured determines whether a person grows up to be good or evil. When a baby is born it does not know anything. All the values he is endowed with are come from his parents and through socialization, his school, college, employed life etc. What he sees he learns and thus either becomes wicked or good.

I feel that when a person is born your neither good or evil. How does a baby know what good or evil is they have no understanding of the world till they start learning and growing. Someones good can be another person evil or someones evil can be another person good it just depends on how your raise and how you see things.
When your born its a clean slate.

I don't think I could give an general answer for all the humanity. Some people are good, some are evil. The fact is that we all have good in evil in us, it depends on us which one we let prevail. This is a question many philosophers tried to find and answer to. Some said that man is good and the society corrupts him. Some said the contrary. I think that each of us is different.

Muslims do not believe in Original Sin and therefore I believe I am born with a clean slate. And how can one possibly be born evil? You haven't tasted the world yet; this is the time of innocence. Toddlers and children can be naughty, but evil? I don't think so. You do however hear now and again that some young kids kill their pets. Now that is something to look into; it could be a sign of something worse to come.

I think there's a way why a certain person gone "good" or "evil". We are born as a "good" person since we are learning most of the things when we are young, and it's up to us to maintain that goodness in anyway.
Some person tend to be "Evil" is because of the nature and environment he is living or what lifestyle he sees in his community.
The bottomline is, We are born "good" and it is up to the persons around you how to craft you to be "good" or "evil".

Well, human nature is good or evil or no,i don't know, but i believe that the man is good, evil is a existence certain injustice forced out of.evil is the environment to create,is a belief decision of good and evil.i hope all of us use our good heart to treat others, and we should hold an optimistic attitude to face the life of good and evil.

Its all about how your brought up, the life you have lived the character building stuff!
you could have a miserable / terrible life then it could be the fact you cant get over your past and your like a ticking time bomb waiting to blow, or a rosey life and building your character later on like a slowly tickin time bomb,
so the way i see it it's the buttons we push and the roads we have to go down that make the devil come out, and sometime's accidents happen,
but mailny i think its the lacking of essentials needed growing up !

Yes some people are born good and some people are born bad. Bad people are to go in the right way due to fear of police. Education cant make a bad a true one. A bad always tends to go bad. Its a bads nature. I think those people are really educated who are born good even if they dont have any education. I think educated people are born educated.

Your question is really esoteric. Many behavioral scientists hold that human beings are good when they are born, but with the ages raising, they gradually learn much from people around and even media such as TV, video and so on good and eveil, because they don't have the ability to recognize which is good. So to be good is the most important for us.

I believe humans are born in between good and evil, then the evilness or goodness withen us only developes as we grow, for me it only depends on how we are introduce/d to the world or how our parents or the grown ups have cultivated us by the morals they teach/taught us. I believe this because when we are born and start growing into a baby we don't really know what we are doing, wither it is/was good or bad until we are grown enough to understand.

In my opinion there is no such thing as human born good or born bad people are what life makes them, or in other words people become good or bad depending on the experiences they have, the other people in their life, and mostly their parents and way of living.
