Our new GGranddaughter is due next week, this baby's Grandmother has decieded to make a quilt for the baby made of different fabric pieces from the families involved. A shirt from Grandpa, a piece of her Daddy's baby pillow, supplied by her Dad's Mom, left over fabric from her cousin's quilt, etc. This seems like a great idea but Grandma underestimated just how long it would take to collect these little
memories from each person who wanted to share in this quilt. I figure I will have to help sew this and just maybe we can get it together by her first Christmas, or maybe by the time she starts school. Has your family ever done a project like this?

That's a great idea! Though I think the hard part would be like you mentioned getting all the pieces together and in time. A project like that can take some time to do. I would say like you said first Christmas, Baptisim, or even wait until she would be old enough to understand. It's a great gesture but you know kids are kids and trash stuff so this project would be better off stored for a few years.

My grandmother sewed a quilt made from my dad's graduation suit and various pieces from her other adult children's clothing. I loved that quilt! Unfortunately, it has been lost or worn out long ago but I'll always remember it and how good it felt on a cold winter's night over my blankets.
I make a quilt for my father in law from a wool blanket his mother has given us. I used the blanket as stuffing. He was a bit teary when I gave it to him.
Quilts are very special if you put a lot of love into them. I hope your granddaughter enjoys hers for a long, long time.

I am not much a quilter...I am not talented in that area but there was one time that I cross-stitched the baby, name, length..all the info at birth. I added balloons on there and teddy bears. I think I will cross-stitch something for my new grandchild. It sounds funny saying that..lol.

I think this is a beautiful idea. My family has never done such a thing although many of them have made individual crafts for the babies of the family. I guess that the strong feeling of family must be bigger than the need of a personal accomplisment. I congratulate you and your people

I have family members who make blankets by knitting or crocheting. Nobody in my family is a big quilter. I think this baby quilt made from different memories of different family members is such a wonderful idea. It is something this child can cherish forever and perhaps hand down to their own child.

Goodluck for the granddaughter :)
we never have such a great and sweet project like that in family, and none even have thought about it. Its a good idea, I think. When its done, the Granddaughter will grow up by knowing that she gt love from all family member, and it will give her good environment to live. Good luck for the project :)

hi savypat! this is a wonderful meaningful idea...i have a couple of baby quilts that people made for my baby who is now twenty years old, and they really are special! my grandparents were quilters and made several quilts together for members of the family...i have never quilted before but i am now hoping to start a quilt for christmas for my son out of different plaid flannel shirt patches and a denim/jean back, i think he will like it while he is away from home at college..i remember watching my mother and her parents quilt together when i was a child, they had a huge quilting frame that they had in their living room ceiling and let down to work on...it is a happy memory for me! happy quilting!
