Our country should change its name.

I might offend some People with what I will say but this is only an opinion. We now consider our country as a free country yet we are still using a name colonist gave us. Spaniards named as Filipinas and I guess the Americans anglicized the name and turned it into "The Philippines" A country named after King Phillip of Spain, generally only few Filipinos speaks Spanish nowadays and yet still uses a colonial name. In a way the name is still a colonial bondage. a change of name is a good start from breaking free from colonial mentality. for sure its not going to cure cancer of make our country first world by an instant but its a good way of showing the world we are our own now. King Phillip is not the King of Spain anymore, We are not a Spanish Colony anymore (not speaking Spanish is a clue)Why do we want to stay as a tribute to King Phillip? Just my 2 cents. Last but not the least, Philippines is hard to spell.

I agree. A new name would be a fresh start. I don't know if your fellow countryman would feel the same way because it would take some getting used to. Keep in mind, the old name helps us to remember our roots.

not really, it reminds us more that we are a slave of Spain. Taiwan is originally named Formosa. Belorus use to be named Belorussia and Bangladesh use to be named East Pakistan. Currently the colonial mentality is still strong in our country. its a good way to start stopping the colonial mentality.

I know this was attempted many times already since the term of Marcos era to this day and it has not successfully been approved. I know there was a proposal that we change our country name to "Maharlika" or something to that effect but it was always opposed in congress. As to erasing the colonial mentality I do not think it will erased anything since it is ingrained in our culture already and changing name won't remove it since it is part of our culture anymore. I have nothing against changing names but I think there are many things we have to anticipate this with. Like for example changing many things like changing our nationality name from Filipino to whatever name we will choose. Of course we need to change our Passports and it will entail a big problem for DFA to process everything when that happens. We also have to change our profile from many things like in the financial community we have this ph symbolizing our country I know this will create more confusion when we adopt a new country name. Sometimes it is better to stay as to what we have than changing something we were known for.

Actually The first attempt is Andres Bonifacio. Actually if our country changed its name its going to be a global publicity and it may actually promote tourism. There is a financial benefit. It would be a global event.

If that happened during the times of Andres then maybe we could have really change easily back then since we were just starting with our nation back then. But it was proven many times again and again that Philippines is still the preferred name for our country for some reasons our politicians are choosing right now. I think it is like a part of the DNA of our country that we cannot easily change at will.

well he got killed so he never had a chance to make his proposal happen, Its a hard transition but one of the reason we cant progress is that Filipinos are afraid of changes, That's why many are against it, I dont find it nationalistic for a free country to still use a colonial name.

I think Marcos made a proposal to name the Philippines something else but it went nowhere.

For sure if this prevailed then I guess many Visayans and Mindanaoans could have protested for this one.

Makes me wonder if visayas and mindanao already existed when Bonifacio came up with the name . But if that's the case, I think I'll go for Marcos' "maharlika" which sounds more noble.

Hi there Albert, I will not mind at all if our leaders would change the name of our country. But I am sure "many" would oppose about it because we are already accustomed to it. And with those many problems that we facing, it will surely be taken for granted. (I just hate the fact that they spell it Philippino as people from other country would refer to us..)...They should at least take some effort to find out if it spells correctly. Happy Mylotting.

"Phillippino" I hate that spelling, Foreigners kept on forcing. the people againts change wants to stay as a tribute to King Phillip, we are like the only colonial Asian country that kept the colonial name.
