Sometimes when my wife and i are sitting watching the soaps on TV my mind disengages from the humdrum of fictional "reality" programming and i contemplate the world we live in. Many renowned authors have toyed with the idea of a utopian lifestyle and to be honest it does seem like a perfectly plausable existence. Surely all mankind needs as a society to survive is the food we consume and the structural abodes we call our homes? Is it not our governments that decree that we need exports and imports and are these not all based on greed to make our countries (and private buissinessmen) richer? If everyone took turns to farm the land could we not self support a nation by sharing the spoils? There is more than enough food to share free of charge, think of all the food supermarkets throw out because of 'end off' dates that are perfectly edible. Authors, poets, thinkers and architects would all still flourish in a society like this without the need for poverty, people feeling worthless in minimum wage jobs and no wars. You do away with money and you do away hostility. Your thoughts please?

Hello ajk111 You are definately advocating a utopian society. Like you, I agree that it would seems a logical thing to do. Why, indeed, can't we live together and share all that we have instead of worrying about having more than the other fellow? I wouldn't go so far as to blame the present situation on our governments, especially in my country, because the government in my country is theoretically 'of the people, for the people and by the people.' Therefore, it's not the government's fault, but the people's fault. I think it's more a question of greed. And fear, which leads to greed and hatred. This may be supported / fueled by the government as it helps to support the system already in place, which benefits the people in government.

I've started a utopian system in my house where i take everybody's wages and give them enough food to survive. it's working very well from my point of view

You sound like a brilliant economist. We should pool our resources. I bet that we could make a trip to the local pub!

Here is a thought. What if we are at the moment living in paradise with hell right around the corner. It sounds like my neighbourhood. I refuse to discuss alternative food producing methods with anyone that does not have a very large garden. It is not an easy job, does require skill and knowledge, time to nurture a proper soil and becoming in our changing climate complicated to manage for the average dude and petite lady friend. What is left is produce that does require a lot of energy to bring to market. Energy means money and economics is a discussion on its own. There has never been in human history anything without it. The only exceptions are perhaps communes and cooperatives but even they as models were still interactive with the rest of the world. I think the solution requires Godly intervention and I am not just kidding. However, for the purpose of discussion, I’ll play along here. I just hope you don’t mind me sitting under the tree, in the lawn chair sipping lemon aid while you smash down the weeds and bothersome insects with your hoe. I may not always be there either to watch because I want to run off to an air conditioned store to buy some banana’s (as I like a good banana) as they don’t produce well in my neighbourhood, at least not yet! Please, don't get hostile with me because I do like it even though it might not be for much longer?

Don’t give up on your idea or dreams, I think there will be many that will want a share in it too. Recently, I watched a documentary on what the future holds for farming. It is not a rosy picture. We could all be facing a world food shortage along with lack of fresh water ahead. One thing the documentary did look at was Cuba for solutions. They have low energy need small farm operations to feed the population as compared to high energy big industry in other countries and it was suggesting that this could work well in other places too. Something to think about as bigger doesn’t always mean better. Thanks for the compliment but I don’t know it all that’s for sure.

Actually socialism and communalism was thought to be Utopian too but it has failed in most countries where it was enforced. I dont believe in utopia. Greeks had two words- u-topos and eu-topos. One of them means a perfect place and the other means a place which cannot be. (I learned this from Sopranos) so in my view, capitalism is best. utopia is a very nice idea but sadly not practical as human nature is too selifh and greedy to make it a reality. if we were all angels then im sure we would have been living in paradise.
