It is 98 degrees today. It is only the second day of summer. What are some ways that you beat the heat?

Second day of summer? I'm sure that is going to confuse a lot of people around the world including me. It's coming up to mid summer as far as I am concerned. Whatever, it's hot - we can agree on that. Although 98 (American) degrees is still quite cool for us. Middle forties (Celsius) is when we start feeling it! The sea isn't far away.

How do you stay cool?

Yeah, I tried that here as well, Petersum, since we do not have air-conditioning. I also turned on some fans, which only really just moved the air around but gave the illusion of making it a little cooler in the house. When the temperature reached 98 degrees Fahrenheit inside the house, however, I realized that this just was not going to work.

We close the doors, windows, and shutters as the sun comes up so that our homes stay cool throughout the day. Opening them again at evening time. But a trip to the beach on an air conditioned bus or tram is another option.

Ugh, in my country it's really hot, too. I wear loose-fitting clothes made from thinner materials (which kind of flow and give me a breeze), drink a lot of cool water or juice, try to travel on public transport vehicles which have windows to be opened and eat ice-crea, Oh, and I leave my window open (if we don't use the air conditiner, but that kind of rotates the used air, and that's not that good, so we use it rarely).

We've been lucky here so far, hasn't hit the 90s yet and actually been in the lower 80s. Later in the summer I am sure it will hit the 90s, and even break 100. On those days I'll either stay in the air condition with a nice cold jug of iced tea, or make a trip to the local mall or a movie to get a couple hours of cool air.

I am lucky to have air conditioning..but when the kids were little I didn't. So I would pack them up and go to a movie or something...someplace that did have air. Another thing I did was make lots of ice cubes and put them in front of a fan....now I see that on the weather channel they say to do this as it does help cool down the air.

It's hot here too but I live in Florida. With the kids out of school we've been heading to the pool several days a week lately. The other options we've been doing are going to the mall and walking around or going to the movies. Good luck, stay cool, and happy myLotting!!!

You and I are definitely on the same page with this one as I just checked to see if there was a recent discussion that had been started with the same title that you've used for your discussion. For us, the main thing that we will do in order to beat the heat is to spend a lot of time in the swimming pool. My mother has a swimming pool in her backyard and during the summer we will go over to her house almost ever single afternoon so that the kids (and I) can get into the pool.

We've had some pretty hot days already, too, and the next few days are supposed to be in the 100s! Not good... I have air conditioning so I'll be using that, at least some. Other ways I try to beat the heat is opening up the house in the evening when it cools off and running fans to draw in the cooler air. I close the curtains against the sun and keep the house shut up unless the indoor temperature is the same or higher than the outdoor temperature. Spritzing with water helps, as well as drinking lots of fluids and eating light. Keep the lights off, and any electronics that I can. I don't cook inside unless absolutely necessary. I make sun tea instead of brewing it, use the solar oven when I can. I wear light clothing and go barefoot, too!

I know! It's 104 degrees right now and it's only the end of June. I drink plenty of water, but the air conditioner on full blast is the only thing that really helps. Which isn't good because if everyone does this it will cause another power outage, and no one wants that.

Yes, yesterday was the Summer Solstice. It is 92 here right now. Although I have had my window open all day I usually close up doors and windows during the heat of the day(about 10:30a until 9p or so) and then I open everything up to cool it off in the house. I also turn the A/C on for afew minutes during the peak heat times if it is very hot. And I take sponge baths through out the day if it is muggy and uncomfortable. I have a fan too that I use occasionally. Getting the kids to keep the door closed during the day is a feet within itself. lol Happy Mylotting.

The pool is a major way...lol. I have also just become very much in love with a drink called Calypso Southern Peach Lemonade. I love that stuff and actually crave it now. It sounds weird and I was a little put off when my b/f brought it in to me but the moment I tasted it, I was beating the heat..lol. I might also try to spend a little more time in it than usual..it gives us a little resistance to it to do so..lol.

Hiya M.L. Like a good many others drink water and more water and splash a bit of cool water on the inside of my arms and back of knees and also in the middle of my back. Wear clothes as loosely as possible and keep right out of the direct Sunlight all you can. Right now I am writing with the Shutters almost right down to block so much heat it´s 37 to 38 degrees centigrade here today and going up and the worst is the night because it does not drop very much in comparison to how it does in other parts of the Country. No cool breeze just stifling heat. Also we have this stifling weather until Thursday of next Week. We have had lots of this already though so now we are getting used to it.xxx

It is just the start of summer in your country. Here in ours it was the start of rainy season. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking water to avoid complications by excess heat during summer.

Hello MandaLee I used to live in the southern part of the USA and the heat was oppressive all the time. The summers were especially brutal. We beat the heat with air conditioning, of course. We also had a nice pool, but sometimes that became too warm to really enjoy. We also liked making our own slip-n-slide out of giant rolls of plastic and cool well water. The boys and I really enjoyed that one. During the hottest parts of the summer, we enjoyed floating on inner-tubes down the cool, crystal clear, spring-fed rivers in North Florida. This was very refreshing. Now, I live in northern part of the USA and I haven't encountered heat yet. We haven't even turned on the air conditioning, although all of our neighbors are running theirs as if they are dying from the heat. I guess it's just what you're used to.

Also, wear cool clothes (I don't mean clothes in which I look cool, but in which I feel cool) and drinking plenty of cool liquids also seems to help. We do use a fan now and it helps. And we sleep with the windows open as it is much cooler at night.

We are running the AC to beat the heat. It is very hot. I really wish we had a pool to enjoy! I am going to save up to buy one at the end of the summer when they all go on clearance at Walmart or somewhere!

I try to make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluid but not always just water as this is actually not healthy ... we lose a lot of necessary minerals and such in our sweat and pure water will not help to replenish them, so things like Gatorade or other similar drinks are also important. I also tend to not eat as much, so I try to eat healthy things with a high water content, such as fresh fruit and vegetables. In addition, I like to eat juice pops, because they make you feel cooler than just drinking the juice but you still get the benefits of it. This might not sound like ways of "beating the heat", but I find that the heat does not bother me as much if I feel good rather than feel sick or "out of sorts".

Oh, lots of ways!! Go swimming, spray water, let the kids loose on the sprinklers, drink a lot of water or cold drinks (stay hydrated), go to the mall or grocery store (free air conditioning while shopping, ha ha), eat outside in the evenings, wear cool clothing like tank tops and shorts, go ice skating (we have indoor rinks - it's actually freezing because it they need to keep the temps low for the ice), put cool wash cloths on our heads, stay in shady areas . . . and those are just some of the ways!!

hi dear MandaLee its too cool for summertime over here. I have this week off now and it has been raining too much. But I cant complain so I could get some things done around the apartment. back to your question, normally hot weather means blinds down and windows open for the night.

98 degree is a too hot climate. Drinking a lot of water will help you a lot. During these days evaporation takes places at high rates and sweating takes place. So you need to drink a plenty of water on these days. This will help you to cool your body. Secondly have bath twice or thrice per day. This will help you a lot to feel a great relief from the hot climate.

wonder, indeed drinking plenty of water and having a few times bath in a day is a very good option to beat the heat. That's what we are doing here, when the temperature goes very high.

Wow, it was pretty bad today. I took a cool shower soon as I got up and I am heading there again before bed. We had a cold salad with veggies, hard boiled eggs seasonings and mayo. My kids wanted tortilla pizza but I said no way, no heating up the oven. I didn't open the downstairs door until around six when the sun went down to keep it cool and I rubbed ice on my neck a lot. Then my husband went and got us ice's with custard from Rita's Italian Ice place. Good thing the cat's aren't panting or I would have had to give them a cool bath. They narrowly escaped it ha ha.
