Why won't it resume windows?

My laptop... my big one.. it's regular size and i love it, except that it won't resume windows.. when it times out after several hours it will go black. I turn it on and it says resuming windows but nothing happens. Just a thingy at the top (a white line up and down) blinking.. but it never turns back on.
In order to turn it back on I have to take out the battery and unplug it from its power source so it will reboot.
Any ideas as to what I can do to fix this?
One of the mylotters here helped me get my wifi back on, so maybe she knows what to do or someone else may know what to do. There is a great wealth of knowledge here on the Lot.
so... anyone know?

I think your operating system is corrupted and in need to be reformatted..

I couldn't have said it better Owlwings. I don't seem to have a reboot in there.. except to restore it to a point when it worked properly, but that doesn't work either. I need something I can do to fix it, not something drastic like that that will probably totally mess it up. I did do that once and it totally messed up and I had to spend $100 to get it fixed and from then on I never found the reformatting program... forget what it's called.
