I saw a deer

I was driving out to a friend's house in the country and when we were about to her place there was a big deer standing in the middle of the street. Now, if it were dusk or dawn it wouldn't have surprised me, but it was the middle of the afternoon! She looked at us. I slowed down and looked at her until she turned and ran back into the trees. I think my friend's area may have a bit more wild life in it since the fires last year ruined a lot of the surrounding areas. I know she probably likes to see deer, its the predators she worries about with her cats.

That's how it is here as well and I love it. I actually want to move further up north into the country or wild.

I don't often see wild animals near the areas I'm in normally, but I was outside town where this friend lived. I don't see her as much as I would like because she works different days/hours than I do.

Its hard as we get older to get together with others. When I use to work midnights I never saw anyone as my schedule was opposite as theirs. Its nice to go on hikes and see nature as well. I know some people around here get moose, and deer going through their backyard. I would love that right now I'm rather close to a main road and most big animals stay clear.

About 15 years ago I was driving through an area I used to live when I saw 3 animals come out of a yard, I thought at first they were Great Danes, but on closer view they were deer!

We have had deer downtown and foxes as well. I know it it neat to see them. Just as long as you do not "see them" up close and personal with your car. I do wonder how safe my cats are from the foxes and coyotes, and shoot, even from the possums. I have had a possum walk in my backdoor one morning when I had it open for the cats to go out.

No doubt you do have them. Just because we do not see them does not mean they are not there.

I only mean downtown, and that really is only a square mile or so, the rest of town, that's a whole other story.

We don't have deer downtown, but Austin is a big city - but I've seen deer and foxes inside the city limits... I'm sure there are smaller wildlife down town since there are a couple of creeks that run thought Austin.

hi ElicBxn the picture I have often seen in my mind was engraved there during a horrible fire season in Tustin Ca a little over four years b ack when we sill lived at El Dorado Gardens apts. the fire came right down to the city l imits. Traffic was stopped on the main Newport Blv. traffic stopped and people just watched. it was horrible as the ppor animals were so panicked they no longer were afraid of people, they just wanted to not be burned any more. the fire came so close it was just yards from our apt complexes then the wind changed and the firefighters finally got it under control . animal rescue people had to come with a bevy of trucks, calm the deer down and transport them back up into the Tustin hills where the fire was out. No cars hit them mor did anyone run into each other the scene was so wild people just stopped and watched It was so scary and those deer were so pathetic too I still weep thinking about it. in the wild fires they have statistics on how many people were injured, how many properties damaged but no one thinks about the wild life whose lives were disrupted.

I know a lady who's ex is a highway patrol guy who's hit about a dozen deer, they have a special grill from his car because of it! These roads where he's at have big ditches on either side because when it rains it tends to stand, so these deer would jump out of these ditches and he'd hit them because they'd do it right in front of him! My dad was involved with 3 cars and a deer when I was a child - the deer actually was hit by the first 2 cars and then he only kind of bounced off dad's car damaging the front fender and taking off the rear view mirror. And the poor deer survived that. When the highway patrol showed up he told the patrol man he needed to put the deer out of its misery.

A deer jumped out from between two houses in the pitch black one night while I was driving and ran right in front of my car. We collided. It caused damage to my grill, my hood, my left quarter panel, my left headlight, left running light and my windshield. The poor thing had broken it's back and was flopping around in the middle of the road. I jumped out of my car and stopped traffic coming both ways until the police showed up. The poor thing seemed to be quite alert but could not move it's hind end. It finally dragged itself down a small hill and laid down, probably waiting to die. The police shot it to put it out of it's misery, too. It's amazing what they can survive.

Awwww, how adorable! How I would love to see a deer. There are many in this country but they're very secretive. Probably like your lot. We did see a wild fox though once, in broad daylight, on one of our drives into the countryside a few years ago. It stopped to look at us too, then ran off. Gorgeous!

I'm used to the local deer, and this one, tho only about 20 miles away, was way bigger than the local ones - probably the difference between living in a more marginal area like Austin with the hills and poorer soil and that deer living in a woodland area.

You are really lucky that you actually noticed that deer in time...Those animals can really do some distructive damage to an automobile... Besides what does one do when they hit sometime as large as a deer?..fortunately I have not had that experience.

Yeah, from the ages of 14-16 we lived in front of a heavily wooded area. We would see deer, but one time a coyote got ahold of my sister's kitten.

wow what an experience!i never saw a deer up close and personal. i just saw them in movies and in my food web worksheets. i am not that familiar with that organism and we don't have deers in our area too. i just happened to know some facts about deers. When we encounter the deer in the wild, our breath catches - we are transfixed by their graceful features and delicate movements. The deer is linked to the arts, specifically poetry and music in ancient Celtic animal lore due to its graceful form. The Celts also believed that deer were associated with the fairie realm, and would lead troops of fairies - hundreds of them trailing behind them as the stag cut a path through the forest.

Yeah, deer aren't really something you'd find there since most of the larger animals were imported by people settling there. They are beautiful. I was just so surprised that one was out at that time of day since they normally browse at dusk and dawn.

That's really cool! I always get nervous when I spot deer at the side of the road, especially when it's late or after dark and they are feeding there at the side of the freeway. I mean, you're going like 80 miles an hour and they could just jump out at any second and then BAM!! So, that's good reason to be nervous about seeing them. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

I agree, but this was in the middle of the day on a small country neighborhood road. I've never had a close encounter on a major freeway, but I have on a country highway. Fortunately, I spotter her first.

I love seeing deer. For a while, we saw them fairly often as new housing developments were going up taking the deer woods with them. It was sad to see since our part of New Jersey had always been rural. Now it all exurbs. I hate it!

would you believe that in 2007 when I visited New Jersey I saw a handsome stag and a family of wild turkeys? I saw more wild life in that week visit to NJ than I normally do in several months in Texas!

The last few years, the town of Taylor has been having a problem - here's the news about them - apparently this year they managed to push them to an area park... http://austin.ynn.com/content/212280/nesting-birds-cause-headaches-in-taylor

The turkeys have really gone crazy this year. In one town, they've begun attacking people in their own yards. They're all over the place. Almost like Canadian geese, but not quite so bad yet. Hopefully they won't be.

We have deer out here where I live. When you go out on the turnpike or the highways they will be in the wooded type/country areas. It's kind of scary because they are right there at the side of the road and you could hit them if they ran out.

I live in a heavily wooded area so i am used to see ing deer in the fields. During hunting season, You need to be careful of having them jump across the higheay when you drive. I don't usually see that many deer in the summer months. Yesterday morning, I was eating breakfast and I looked out the kitchen window and there stood the biggest deer I ever saw. At first I thought it was a dog. that really gave a jumpstart to my day. I was a little worried because we have two out side dogs and cats that like to roam around. i was afraid of interaction with the deer, but it turned out just fine.

I've never seen a deer near my house, tho parts of town have a real problem with them. They are tearing up a field nearby so I'm getting some of the smaller wildlife in my yard, I've seen an opossum.

My friend had built a pen for them, but in the last year it had "sprung a leak" but the hole was in the top so dogs or coyotes couldn't get in and hurt them.

As long as there are deer and other displaced critters, the predators aren't very apt to go for the cats. It's when there isn't anything to hunt or if the predator is old they will go for domesticated animals. Around our area it is common for the deer to be in the middle of the roads, driveways, and in our yards. Since the feed is scarce they will go anywhere for a bite to eat. Deer prefer green food and right now all the available food is dry, so they aren't very interested. What is really fun in our area is when the turkeys are looking for mates. They will respond to anything that closely resembles a turkey call. I have gobbled at them, honked my car horn at them, blew raspberries at them and they have happily answered my call. In fact they have followed my car after I have honked my horn at them, with their tail feathers in full display to impress the female that called them...unfortunately it isn't easy to mate with a Suburu Station wagon!

We have some wooded areas and see deer fairly often even in city limits. We hit one on the interstate 5 or 6 years ago. Just yesterday a 16 year old we know hit a deer on the interstate north of here. He is ok, but it busted the radiator and so the car in not drivable. My husband was able to give him and his dad a ride back to the city.

There are areas in town where deer are considered a garden pest, but not around me. It always kind of surprises me a bit that I don't see more wildlife because I do have 2 pretty large wooded fields near my house, not really large enough to support deer, but smaller critters.

We used to see deer frequently when there was an open field behind the houses across the street. Now that area is filled with houses, we don't see any more deer and not as much other wildlife. I liked to see the deer but am glad that my landscaping is safe from them. Now, if I could convince the squirrels and rabbits that I didn't plant my garden just for them. I didn't know squirrels ate tomatoes, but that is what my husband saw.

I never saw deer when I was growing up in an area, but about 15 years ago I was driving in that area about midnight and spotted 3 deer - I think the increased housing in the hills had driven them down into the neighborhoods.

There are those to worry about for sure. I bet the fires did drive the animals closer. I see alot of deer here but the natural predators of the area are quite rare now. Coyotes are the most common I guess now. I think they reintroduced Timber Wolves a while back. There is a place they are limited to though...a controlled area where they can't venture further than the fences allow. Eventually they will let them go but for now they are fenced. Bears are another thing. We can go to Cades Cove here and see them in the early morning..they warn you not to feed them though.

I never hear about bears in Texas, and I think I've seen coyotes around Austin, but not really inside the city limit. Yeah, not too many predators left, especially around large cities like Austin.

We humans are more and more invading wild animals territories. Like the deer and other wild animals. That probaly would explain seeing a deer in the city during the day. Coyotes are invading city and towns, too. Raccoons are known to do that, too. As long as us human keep building closer and closer to the wild life this will keep on happening.

My friend lives out in the country - so really it wasn't so much that I saw a deer, it was the time of day. And that it was stopped in the middle of the road and watched us, before it decided to turn and run.
