Bagel Problems!

I have been trying to make home made bagels for months now. I have to do everything by had because I do not have a stand mixer and I really can't afford one. The problem I am having is that the bagels are really dense, but they still taste good. I wish they could be more airy inside the bagel and still taste as good. Any ideas on why my bagels are coming out so dense would be helpful.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you because I don't normally bake anything. I just wanted to say that i thought this was a sort of unique thing to be trying to bake, and by hand. I've heard of people trying to bake a lot of things but this is the one thing I hadn't heard before until now! Of course I don't normally look around for people baking things, so, who knows how common it actually is. My only suggestion is either having less... of some ingredient or more of a liquid! But don't take my advice, if I tried it, I'm sure they'd all turn out hard as rocks.

Its okay, the first time I tried to make these I was so lost, since the first time when I found out you needed to boil the bagels before you bake them. I was like I am supposed to do what, but it was actually really cool and they are easier to make and fun to make. Though I think I am having problems with the dough during the kneading process.

Oh, I would not have even thought about boiling in the process. Well I hope that someone on here can give you some advice for it and if you get it down nicely, maybe you could let your friends try to see what they think.
