How would you take care of a virus on your computer?

Depending on the virus I would do one of two things:
1) Boot from a linux live cd and use antivirus software to clean my computer
or
2) Save my personal data off the computer, wipe the hard drive, and reinstall the operating system. If option 1 doesn't work it might be easier to just wipe everything and start off with a fresh new slate.

Virus is the main reason i don't use windows anymore (i install it on virtualbox only to run some money making programs such as gomez peer and mybrowsercash). I got tired of reinstalling stuff. It's just time consuming. Now i use linux, because not many people use linux, the virus in linux is probably zero. I'm not that tech savvy, but up to this day, i'm happy with linux.

Go linux! I myself prefer linux but hate the non-existent third party support, which is a bothersome with me as I do need access to certain programs that are Windows only.

first of all, before i assume the error is done by a virus, i do stuffs that do not involve any anti-virus software or whatsoever.
i reboot my computer, enter into the Windows Advanced Options before it starts to boot into Windows, and load the "Last know good configuration" option. if that does not work, i reboot again, and instead load the Safe Mode option. after logging in into Safe Mode, i run "msconfig" and inspect on the Start-up menu, un-checking unnecessary and suspicious start-up files, then reboot.
if that does not work again, i boot into Safe Mode again, initiate the procedures on System Restore to restore my settings back to earlier save point.
and too many procedures to mention hehe.
i think reinstalling the operating system could be the very very last resort.
good luck!

Actually I used to run antivirus programs in safe mode, which used to work really good. However lately I have been seeing "smarter" malware which infects Safe mode, or even disables it altogether! Hence the reason why I have to boot from a linux live cd to even get to a workable desktop to run antivirus programs.

Hi
Even I do the same.. I have good antivirus on my system. So most of the time I stay protected from anti virus.. If somehow my system got infected with virus, then mostly I do format the hard disk and reinstall the operating system. I guess in the end this is the best option.

Virus attacking my computer can be very frustrating. First I would look at the virus and its nature. I would apply an anti-virus towards it. If the anti-virus fail not to remove it, I would try another anti-virus and if it fails, I would meet a friend that know more about virus, if the virus still remains stubborn, I would be left with no option but to format my system

I just tend to rely on anti-virus rampant in the net and try them one by one(not all) until I obtained the best. If all of those will not of help, ill do the same on your number 2. Save my data and format my drive.
