You didn't say if the fish are babies. I do agree with the other posters, if we are talking about adults, then its easy to tell the difference. If you have babies, then you have to wait until they are large enough to tell.

You probably have lots of babies now. I do agree Mollies are easy to breed and they have lots of babies. Have fun with the fish.

i think they are adult enough. the smallest molly is about 1 inch long and i bought them in a pet shop. Yesterday i saw one of the molly sniffing the bottom of the other fish. I've done a research about mollies and if I'm not mistaken they are mating already. I love fishes and I want to breed more varieties but first I want to learn more about mollies and how to breed them because they said molly is the easiest fish to breed. And thanks to those who responded my post i really appreciate your help.

Look at the anal fin. The anal fin on a molly fish is located on the belly of the fish; it's the fin closest to the tail. On a male, the anal fin is elongated and tubular in shape. This is because the anal fin on the male contains an organ that is meant to deposit sperm in the female. The female's anal fin is fan shaped. Examine the body shape. The body of a female molly fish in profile is rounded than that of the male. The male tends to have a body that is slightly longer and thinner.Inspect the coloration. In most types of molly fish, the males are more brightly colored and showy than the females. That means that although both male and female might be orange, the male is a more vibrant hue.

I agree with everything that was mentioned above and just to add, in live bearing fishes like mollies, guppies etc..., the male is at times always ( but there are exceptions) smaller when they are both adults. When observing as what was mentioned with fins, observe adult mollies when they swim together, the male molly is most of the times behind the female and always trying to arouse her sexually.

If the male chasing the female is it a sign that they're both ready? I have swordtail and blue moon fish and they grew more than inch only. I had it last year, summer and until now they are so tiny compared to the one i gave to our neighbors. Anyway, i fed them with food that i bought at the public market. Does it affect their growth? Do i need to buy new fish food in pet shops?
