Issues between Turkey and Syria?

Ok, I"m not going to lie, I'm horrible about knowing world news and stuff like that. But I keep seeing online things about Syria going to war and that they also took down a Turkish plane. I was just wondering if anybody had any more info about what's going on over there. Ever since my boyfriend joined the army I try to keep up with that stuff because I constantly worry about where he'll be sent. If they're in a war, I just don't want him having to go there if the U.S. gets involved. Whenever I see news like that I automatically start to worry because I don't want him getting sent overseas to a dangerous place.
