A giant black moth parked itself just outside my front door at the top of the wall several days ago; this moth was about six inches across and four or five inches long with a very large head. It almost looked like a bird. I was very careful when going out and in so as not to disturb it. It was there for a couple of days and then when I went out it was on the porch pavement dead. Some research show that it was most likely a Giant Black Witch Moth that has a normal habitat in the tropics and ranges up into Southern Texas. So it has a normal habitat that is is very wet. So this one must have been blown way of course for it to be here in the hot dry Albuquerque, NM area. The humidity has been very low and the temperature has been around 98 F. So I am sure that the weather is what killed. The photo shows a male and a female and the one that was here must have been an extra large male.

We have a large brown moth around here about the same size. They are Sphinx Months but we call them Hummingbird Moths, because they are about the size of a hummingbird, and when they are flying/feeding they look like hummingbirds.

Force of habit is a wonderful thing! I just spent several minutes wondering which TV show you were talking about. Oops!
