The main thing you have to consider is the processor, RAM & graphic card. I prefer AMD which does better in gaming. Check for the following also
Nvidia 9600GT
4GB of DDR2 RAM
ASUS motherboard
500W PSU
2x 300GB maxtor HDD SATA
The brand and speed of RAM that you purchase has virtually no impact on game perfomance; just make sure you buy 4 gigabytes.
In conclusion, the best gaming PCs only operate accordingly your entire system is equipped with sufficient parts, that are configured properly and maintained on average basis. You can't expect to buy a fast processor and purchase a minimal amount of memory supported by your motherboard, which will create a bottle neck in you system

Theres no such thing as a 'best config' for gaming. Unless you have money falling out of every pocket and sock....
Really it comes down to one major thing, what kind of games you would be playing. A lower spec machine may play games you want to play where as it wouldn't be playing an up-to date FPS for example. You need to know the kind of games you want to be playing and what kind of system specs they need. Once you know that take a look at setting yourself a budget. Once you have a budget set for how much you want to spend then you can start looking at hardware.
