The fleas weren't to blame

Some of you may remember the last year war with the fleas. We tried "the natural way" with almost no results, then we went back to the chemicals and the results weren't what we expected. This year, once the warm days started, the scratching problem started, too. Although I took all the measures - I treated my dog with the monthly pipette plus a flea collar, I applied a flea collar on each street dog in the neighborhood - my dog was still scratching a lot. I couldn't see any flea on her, though the effect of the pipette (Stronghold for dogs 20-40kg) were the one we expected. I can say that because I found a dead tick on Binne, so the chemicals were working fine. So why was she scratching? We went to the vet to find the answer. First he gave Binne some pills, to see if they help. They had some antihistaminic agent but their effect was ZERO! After four days he gave her an injection with antiinflammatory. And guess what? Binne stopped scratching like she never had any problem. I can't say how happy I am for her. I think she were feeling miserable with that scratching issue she had. The vet's diagnostic was "allergic dermatitis with unknown causes". He eliminated the flea cause as neither me nor him couldn't find any flea or flea dirt on Binne. He said Binne must have that injection every two or three days. In fact, he said that if she starts scratching again, he will give her a new injection. Binne hasn't been scratching for two days now and I hope she won't need a new injection too soon. What do you know about allergic dermatitis? What do you know about the treatment? Were you ever in the situation to blame it on somebody/something with no guilt?

Hi inu, long time no see... I know nothing about allergic dermatitis, poor Binne.. But I am glad she has no fleas, even though we both had to go with the chemical solution, it is so much better to know that I am safe from those pesky little bitters.. So she has to get a shot every 2-3 days? That is going to cost a lot, isn't it? I hope someone has a solution for you that isn't expensive and helps Binne with her problem..:)

I wonder since this is an allergy if perhaps the vet can't suggest benedryl(sp?) because my neighbor's dog has allergy problems, not with her skin, but sinuses, and her vet suggested this over the counter medication for her. That not only will be less costly, but she doesn't have to get shots so often. As for my girls, I did find the perfect drop, not too expensive, about 100.00 for 6 months, (would be 100.00 per year, but I have double the dogs)but is doesn't deal with ticks, which we do keep our yard trim and don't allow them in long grass on walks and we check them regularly for ticks. Ciara was just at the vet and Penny is going this Sat and he checked Ciara for flea dirt, she is good. The drops I am using is Advantage II and I get it through this online site which makes it even less expensive because of the deals they have and since I do spend over 50.00, I get free shipping. So, you are using but flea drops and a collar on Binne? What kind of flea drops and how expensive is it?

Hello Carmela, I was thinking about you when I wrote this discussion. (I thought about you many many times, but I didn't have time to be here as I wanted to) Yes, Binne has to get that shot regularly. I just hope we will get to the point where she gets that shot less often. It's not too pleasant to go to the vet every two or three days. About the costs... yes, it will cost a lot but if that makes Binne happy, I can't refuse this effort. She feels so miserable when she scratches! I know better how it feels when you feel like scratching. I had a stupid allergy many years ago and I know how miserable it feels. How are your girls dealing with the flea problem?

From my knowledge, Benadryl is an antihistamine (I'll check it to be sure). Binne was on antihistamines for four days (Peritol) but the results were zero. Of course I wish we could find some pills that help instead of those shots. I'll ask the vet if we can try another antihistaminic instead of Peritol.

She is safe, indeed, but the scratching issue is such a nuisance! She feels miserable when she scratches herself so I must do something to help her. I am OK, I was only too busy with the construction site (we build our dream house, remember?) so I didn't have time to be here too much.

Like you I have also lots of dogs and same problem. I was also wondering before why they keep on scratching themselves when I could no longer find fleas and ticks in their bodies? At least it was already answered from your post. Thanks a lot my friend... Mobhomeir here 070212 1340hrs

I am glad I could help. Here's another information I found recently: some fatty acids or Omega-3 pills can also help in some cases of allergic dermatitis. They say there are dogs who respond well only on this kind of medication and they don't need to have those shots. So, for now, we interrupted the shots and Binne is taking fish oil. I hope the results will be satisfactory.

I hope my post will help your dogs get rid of this scratching problem. Before giving them any medicine, you should be sure you eliminated all the causes that might create the problem: any food that is unhealthy for dogs, any other possible allergen. We eliminated this possible cause from the start, as Binne eats the same food since she became an adult, but the scratching issue started only two or three months ago.

I wonder why did your vet say it is an allergic dermatitis with unknown causes. Why "unknown"? Maybe she has something in her diet that makes her scratching. Maybe she's allergic to something in her diet. The food was the first thing to suspect when a dog scratches.

Of course the vet said the same thing: what does she eat? - was his first question. When I told him she has been eating the same food since she was 6 months old, and the problem started only two or three months ago. So food has nothing to do with her scratching issue.

Hi inu- You have a big problem on your hands about Binne. I thought you were wandering around in hills along with Binne while you are up against different kind of problems. Now how old is Binne exactly? I think it may happen in case the age of your dog (if you allow me to call Binne your dog) has past 8-9 years. BTW- How are you doing, I had a chance to see you after a long time. all the best for dear Binne. take care.

Binne is two and a half. But she still has the mind of a puppy. My previous dog was quite old when she had to go. She was 13 years old at the day she had to go. I'm OK, I didn't have time to be here the way I used to, because I spend most of my "free" time on the construction site. We are building our dream house, remember?

So you are who I suspected you were! Why do you have a new account? (again?!) Of course the invitation is still available. Just wait for the house to be built and then we will be able to say we have a home to invite friends over.

My dog had a problem similar to this. She kept scratching and scratching and he skin was all red. It wasn't the fleas. The problem is still unknown since by the time we got our dog to the vet she was better. I hope your dog stays healthy this summer and that you wont have any issues with all this!

Thank you, I wish all the best for your dog, too. Do you remember what treatment was given to your dog when she got rid of the scratching issue?
