Why do we have weird dreams?

When I was younger I used to dream of horror scenes, and would wake up with my heart beating rapidly. Maybe it was because of the movies that I had watched or stories that I had heard. But lately, I had dreamed of weird things, when I was not even thinking of anything unnatural. Two mornings ago, I woke up worried about what the dream was all about, I could not even understand what it's all about. But then, reality would bring me back to my senses and would assure myself that it was only a dream. Are there any of you who knows why we're having these odd dreams?
