Hello mylotters,
Just a couple of years ago CDs was considered as one of the best media to transfer data between computers. But now there are so many alternatives for it like DVD, pendrives etc.
My question is, Do you still use CDs?
I could say I still use it. It suits me in many situations. What about you mylotters?
CD's can be broken easily when it gets bend from your pockets or from your bag. Did you ever lost such CD's containing important datas ?
Please share!

I still use CDs for backing up certain things a DVD disc would be a waste to use for. I'm not gonna back up 700MB of data onto a single DVD 4GB disc. To me its a waste. They can break just as easily as CDs. Lately though I haven't been using much of either.

True but certain things I like to keep separate. Other times im I'm giving someone a copy of something below DVD size I'd use just a normal CD for them.

Yes CD is the best way to take up a back up of the entire system. If we are using external drives and all, they are not much safe so as to have the better security. Because sometimes it may be easily effected by virus..

Hello thewonderboy
Yes, I still use Compact Discs, mostly for music. I have a huge collection of Compact Discs and I enjoy listening to them. I have been thinking about transferring them all to my computer and placing the music on a pendrive or something similar, but I have not done it because it seems it would be so time consuming. I suppose in time this is what I will need to do, though.
Peace

Yes, thewonderboy, I believe that the CD technology will cease to exist, as has happened to the floppy disc and to the VHS tape. What do you think?

I do yet. I even listen to CDs in my car yet. My hubby has an I pod and hooks that up in the car all the time to listen to music. I have an I Pod but only listen to it on walks or as i work out at the gym. I also play computer games on CDs and watch DVDs yet.

Hello Lauraleigh99 , definitely using CDs is really enjoyable in some particular occasions. We need not allow it to be wiped off from the world.

Yes, I still use CDs mostly for installers/drivers. I usually make a backup of my installers/drivers so that if ever they wear off or got damaged, I still have a backup. Most drivers/installers are fitted in a CD that's why I use CD instead of DVD, especially for bootable CDs. But for saving data and personal documents, I usually save it in a flashdrive or external harddrive. Or I also sometimes save it into DVD since the things you have saved in DVD cannot be change or get a virus not like in flashdrives and external harddrives which is very prone. Yes, sometimes, I am having a hard time finding the correct CD/DVD especially when I forget to put a label on it. So it is a good habit to always put a label on your burned disks. Good day!

Sometimes I just forget to label some of my CD's and I find hard to recognize each of them. I need to insert each of the CD and need to look the contents and It is very difficult. So we need to label them when we copy anything to it.
Did you ever lost any of the CD's ? Did any of them get into pieces ?

CD is good to store content and it will not be affected by virus when we use in another computer which is affected by virus. But of late I send the material through internet and use it in another centre. that is more convenient. pendrives are also used by a few. I do not use pendrive for using in others computers. I normally take my laptop and use it in other training centres. good day.

yes. that is another option. I do have a 300gb external hard drive. I use it rarely. It is because my work load is not mush and I can manage by transferring thro pen drive to other laptops.

Hello arunr175, I also have so many CDs in my collection. Labeling all those CDs are really important. Otherwise we need not be able to recognize them later .

Hi,
Yes I do use CDs to store my photos and movies or to store important software files. Though pen drives can be used for these purposes, I feel pendrives or external hard drives are prone to contain more viruses and after every transaction it requires a virus scan tobe performed. Besides, when the data is less and if the data need not be updated, then CDs are preferrable!

Hello padu19, I normally use DVD to store data permanently. Because it has larger capacity compared to CDs. I use CDs to store if the data is very less in its size .

I have never had a broken CD or DVD because of bad packaging. And I do use these re-writables even today. They are quite useful to store data for long and I have no intentions of stopping using them.
I do have CDs or DVDs that get scratched at times due to too much of use but then everything has a time - somethings go great and some dont.
For the pen drives, they are fine today as they come in larger capacities at lesser prices.

Yes, a re writable disc do almost same thing as a pendrive at low cost. Moreover it is more secure form viruses and other errors. There is no need to worry about a file written in a Re-writable disc .

I mostly use dropbox to transfer data between computers now that there's internet everywhere. However, I still use CDs to make LiveCDs for various linux distros, since I still have a box of about 50 lying around.

Well, I must tell you that for many years I used pre-recorded audio CDs. Even those voids in order to copy the data. Today, do not use them anymore!
Precisely for the reason that you mentioned in your discussion, or because of the advent of DVD, the pen-drives and other electronic media, much more versatile than disks from 12 centimeters diameter!

Hello alberello, so many people has stopped to use the CDs. I agree that the main reason is the popularity of pendrive, dvd etc..

wb, i am still using CD even though i am using DVD and pen drive for my data transfer. I will use CD for low quantity data. If the data is high, i will use DVD or pen drive to store. Always i keep my CD in a safe place, so i don't worry about the breakages.

Hello vidhya , it is really an effective way to use CDs when the quantity is less and we need not modify the data in future. This is the main reason why still we all use it .

I only use CD's for movies and videos to watch, I do think the advance from CD's to flash drives has put CD's farther out of date. Whenever I want to back up information or carry a presentation anywhere I use a memory stick.

Yes you are right. CD is one of the best way to back up your files to have more security. It is sure that the data in a cd will not lost until it is broken or damaged. That's why it has achieved such a popularity .

Yes. But I have read some where that we can also burn images to pendrive and can access at the time of boot process. Did you know it ?

But i do more downloading nowadays, since its not cluttering my house.

Me too. I love to play original music cd's. Some illegal version may have cut down the lines and lyrics. So I prefer to buy them for the proper use in the future itself..
It will be an addition to my music cd collection..

I don't use CD's or DVDs. I use pen drive more. I don't use computer much than to download my favorite songs, movies, internet and all that. Just some basics for a simple person.. I use pen drives to give movies etc. to my friends.,, I mean it's easier with pen drives right . But I would like to keep collection of the movies i downloaded from internet. Then I would need a DVD to keep them safe

I use CD's for music still because I'm old school and it reminds me of records I suspect. Anything else, files, I just put on my cheap stick I bought and use the usb port, simple to use. The other thing is if you want to give someone something you can throw a usb stick at them like a baseball, something that doesn't work very well with cd's.

I listen music through the PC or youtube. If the PC is off, I might use my amplifier and CD player. I have a very nice collection. And all the CDs from my favourite rocker, OZZY!
