There ARE viruses on *nix systems. Just, not as many as on Windows (hundreds on *nix as compared to hundred thousands on Windows). Sorry, it's just to claim there's no viruses or that you never have to worry about them on a non-Windows system irritates me, because it's misleading.
In any case, you might want to keep Clam AV handy even if you're using Ubuntu, maybe?

Yes, I have Clam AV installed (too make sure), use Open DNS, ant-phishing apps, and have about 6 add ons for Firefox geared toward security. Its complete overkill. If you log in as "root" in Linux, then you can have your Linux machine taken over. I know there are viruses for Linux, but compared to Windows, its no contest. Windows thousands and thousands of viruses;Linux- a handful.

My favourite free anti-virus software would have to be AVG Free Edition. It ran pretty well during the months I had it on my computer. When I upgraded it to premium though, I felt much safer and protected (I think it's worth it). AVG Free Edition can also be updated everyday and many people are starting using it.

My laptop came pre-installed with McAfree. After its expiry I bought Kaspersky. After that I stopped buying. I use MSE now. Updates itself daily, detects viruses properly which many anti viruses fail to. For Windows users, I think it is the best free anti virus. Good day!

As of now, I have used Mcafee, Kaspersky and Avira. Actually I only remember these 3 software among all other software that I used. According to me Mcafee protects your system very well. But this is recommended only if you have 1GB RAM or more. Else, only your antivirus will work in your computer and you will never be allowed to use any applications. If you dare to use them, be prepared to spend lot of time waiting for the application response!
Avira and Kaspersky are average software. Medium security and medium RAM usage!

Hi
Even I am using avast free edition from few years.. It is quite good and working very well for me so far. I have faced no problem with this anti virus, and my computer is quite safe from the virus. Its long time I haven't formatted my hard disk just because of this antivirus.

Well it's not free but my fave security suite would have to be ESET Smart Security. Always detects the things it should and able to use. Don't notice any negative impact on my system even if its updating its own program files. As for freeware protection Malwarebytes is always handy in my opinion.

As for free anti virus software, i will choose Avast Home Edition. The software is good but not very protective. Having its pro edition is better though. However, I more like using Kaspersky Anti-virus or Internet Security. This anti virus is so good and keeps virus away from my computer. In addition, i does not automatically deletes infected file unlike in Avira however, it can be disinfected. But other says, BitDefender is also a good anti virus so I just want to try it cause my Kaspersky license is going to expire.
