Linux gets rarely frozen, it's more stable than Windows and new type of Linuxes has a very user friendly user interface too, everyone can easily use them. Also I think Microsoft's marketing policy makes it unpopular, like removing the Start button for future marketing purposes. Today, for most of the users a linux is perfectly suitable.

I think Linux is getting popular because Microsoft Windows "Sucks" and people are looking for other trouble free operating systems. This is one of the real reason. I'm using MS xp pro and it has a virus that I can't find even Microsoft has scan my computer and can't seem to get rid of this pest. MS Windows is like their Internet explorer browser just full of bugs never seems to run right always some type of problem arises with them. ...

I agree about the viruses. At some point, I became so paranoid that I no longer trust the integrity of my Windows operating system. I feel that it is somehow hacked or compromised. Anyway, after installing Ubuntu, I stopped worrying about viruses. And after a year or so of usage, I actually forgot how to scan for viruses because in a Linux-based system, there is no need for extra security. The operating system takes care of all these malware stuff.

The Popularity of Linux over Windows like has come from the blunders that have become a part of Microsofts Windows Platform. They have been trying so hard to catch up with Mac OS not realizing that they need to be innovative they aren't anymore. They are just trying to copy what Apple has done with Mac OS X. Windows had it's advantage with Windows XP being simple and cut down now they have gone the route of creating a platform that eats your resources of your computer which are largely limited. Windows Vista was the sign that Windows wasn't going to be going anywhere good and Windows 7 may of been better but Windows 8 is looking like it is going to be one huge mess. I mean it would be very similar to if Apple put IOS and Mac OS X with IOS'es interface being on top of Mac OS X's interface. Windows 8 will have what they are calling Metro as well as Aero (traditional Windows Interface from Vista). It is going to be ugly and well many people will keep using Windows but for those who realize just how bad this is going to be have a choice either move to Mac OS X which means buying all new computers which Apple PCs cost a lot of money. Or move to Linux with there current hardware and have to deal with some of the issues but have a stable platform to develop and run from. Many companies will choose to run on an stable platform and deal with driver issues which with many of the popular Linux Flavors like Ubuntu isn't an problem because of the huge community. Mac OS X is based on the same platform as Linux which is Unix while Microsoft Windows is based in a joint OS called OS/2 which they developed with IBM a very long time ago. Right now Microsoft is trying to get OS/2 to work like Unix and it isn't working out to well because OS/2 is a single user OS while Unix is built to handle 100s of users being on the same computer at the same time.

One particularly significant advantage of Linux over Windows is the apparent absence of viruses and malware. Translation: I saved hundreds of hours that I would otherwise spend on scanning my hard disk everyday. Of course, I still get viruses on my flash drive every time I use a Windows-based system. But it doesn't bother me anymore. Because of this, I must say that I have peace of mind running Ubuntu Linux.

Hello idea24share, some old versions of Linux were not user friendly. But the new versions of Linux are really user friendly. We can use them even though we have not so much experience in it. Also there may be no virus problems in Linux .
