Are you patient when you experience computer problems?

Tonight I wanted to print a receipt from a website. We have printer and desktop computer upstairs and when we have to print something we use the printer in the computer room upstairs. I thought that it was going to take a couple of minutes to print that receipt, but it took me 3 hours! The wireless internet connection is extremely bad upstairs. It is not great downstairs either, but it definitely worse upstairs. I waited and waited and I couldn't open the page.
I decided to carry the printer downstairs and install it on my laptop. I managed to install it without problems, but it was impossible to print the pages. I decided to install the printer on my husband's laptop. At first I couldn't install it and then I managed to install it, but I was still unable to print the page. I was getting frustrated at that point, but I decided to try one last time.
I carried the printer upstairs and decided to be patient (I am not very good at that ) I turned on the desktop, and again I couldn't get access to the internet. I picked up a libary book, a newspaper and a sudoku book and decided that I wasn't going to leave till I had printed that receipt. I read the entire newspaper and solved a couple of sudokus and then I finally managed to print my receipt.
How patient are you when you experience computer problems? Do you get frustrated easily or do you simply keep on trying? How do you pass the time when your computer is slow?

I guess I am pretty much patient when it comes to computer problems. But I will admit that I somewhat lose it a few days ago when I my computer didn’t seem to load the driver install that I am trying to make. I am not a computer expert and I’m more into a computer user so it means that sometimes I feel like a blind person when trying to figure out the problems that my computer have.
I guess the pressure of work and the worry that I might break something also adds to the frustration of to getting things done faster than I would have liked.
As much as possible, I do not want to reinstall OS because it causes me to back every file that I have (and I own and made plenty).
I pretty much patients in figuring out the computer problem but sometimes, doing it in a trial and error method makes me a little impatient. I have to routinely check things are alright and I haven’t done anything disastrous in the course of fixing one problem. It is bad enough that I have to fix one problem, then end with another problem. As I said I an earlier discussion, I might have been hit by a Murphy ’s Law.
As of now, I just hope that there will be no more problems. I do not think my brain can handle anything that frustrating at the moment.

YOu sound like me...and I like the analoge of a computer user instead of a computer expert. I am no where near an expert! I am the poster child for "computer Challenged"! I try so hard to understand it and learn it, but for some reason, it is just over my head. If something happens, I will work on it and write down what I've done and if it works and fixes.. I know what to do next time but if not.. I'm sunk.
Like you, I just hope there will be no more problems.. at least for some time during which I can calm down and collect some confidence to go through it all again!

Like you I am a computer user, but I am not a computer expert. I am able to solve some of the basic problems that I experience, but as soon as it gets little more complicated I don't have the knowledge or the experience that I need to solve the problems and I have to ask someone for help. I also use a trial and error method when I solve problems and sometimes I accidentially make changes that I shouldn't have made and end up with another problem. Fortunately my husband's brother knows a lot about computers and he is usually able to help us when we experience a problem that we are unable to solve on our own.

I'm a patient guy and computer-literate also so in general, I can deal with computer problems quite well.
But there was a time when I was in a particularly bad mood and my computer started acting up, I took my frustration on my mouse and keyboard. I was cursing, too. And finally, I thought about getting a hammer and smashing them both. All that time, I was aware that I was angry and that my mouse and keyboard were not exactly responsible for my problems.

I can relate to that. Sometimes I lose my temper and feel like smashing the computer I felt that way when I experienced the problems with the printer that I described when I started the discussion. Fortunately I managed to control myself and save my computer from harm, but it was tempting to smash it...

@bloggeroo. I was like you when I was in my bad mood (because of the problem and I was already starving – two factors that will anyone extra grumpy). I managed to spare my wireless commuter but my external keyboard (lucky I bought one) was not spared. I am still lucky that I can still sue and it is still functioning. In that day, people were really avoiding me like a am the plague.

My computer is also slow, and I get pis*ed every time it hangs and suddenly it doesn't respond anymore. I mostly do my work online and it bothers me whenever my computer slows. I don't have enough money yet to buy a new computer or even laptop. Well how I wish I could buy one for me to work at least 24 hours a day..:)

I understand what you mean. A slow computer is really annoying when you are trying to work online. Our desktop computer is very old and it very slow. The internet connection is really bad upstairs and that just makes it even worse. My husband's laptop is also old and slow, but at least the internet connection is a little better because we are able to use the wireless internet connection downstairs.

Yup. There are days like that when things are not going well and it gets on our nerves. I had a few episodes myself when I was so close to pulverizing my mouse and keyboard with a hammer. Of course, I didn't. The thought of going out to buy replacements probably stopped me from the momentary insanity.

Haha.. you are absolutely right bloggeroo.. sometimes it came to a point that I would slap the side of my monitor everytime it slow down. I hate it when I experienced it. So much for planning for a laptop because I do not have enough money to buy one.. so maybe I will just have to settle on my current pc for the mean time.

I am a very patient person... do crafts and stuff like that all the time with problems. But with a PC... my patience doesn't last long. Granted it is only cause of my lack of knowledge for the geeks parts of a PC, but still... I do what the screen tells me to do, I do what the pop up windows tell me to do, I do what little I know to do, I ask others and do what they tell me to do... and still....the problem isn't solved! At the moment I have a problem that when I print out coupons....for over a year I printed them out from the same sites and did it regularly every other week and all was fine with the world. Then last February something happened...haven't a clue what, but for some strange reason...the coupons didn't print to my printer. I had changed nothing (I am on the "illierate" side of PC workings!) and they printed fine last week, but this week... nothing. I did all the screens said, I downloaded when they said to, I did it all.. and still the coupons wouldn't print to my printer. BUT... I'd go to other sites, and print things out and they printed out fine. I changed coupon sites.. and no coupons will print from any coupon site... but I have no problem printing from any other site or Word doc. What the......? I have spent hours asking and researching and trying, deleting, clearing, booting, downloading, uploading, you name it I have tried it and still...now in July and just tried again last night... can't print coupons!!!
Patience? I have it, I just dont' have any coupons!!!!!!!

Have you found a solution to the problem about the coupons that you couldn't print? It is strange that you are able to print from other sites and unable to print the coupons. I don't know what the problem could be, but it sounds like a frustrating situation. I finally managed to solve the problem that I had when I started this discussion, but I tend to lose my patience in situations like that especially when I try lots of different methods without any success. I wish I was more patient

Hi porcospino
There are two kinds of computer problems that I encounter - one with my PC and devices (at home) and other due to my providers of Internet (like non connectivity, slow speed etc).
For almost all major problems of computer and gadgets at home, I know a simpler way out - format and reinstall. That resolves almost all issues that I have ever faced. If these are some hardware problems like a burnt out UPS or even a monitor - well, I have no choice but to rely on my providers as I am not an electrician.
For the Internet and 3rd party - I am quite more impatient but then, almost all of the times, nothing helps - they all work at their pace and never get me online when I do need it (maybe that is the way they expect I would grow and learn to have more of patience).

I think that the problems that you can do something about like reformatting and reinstalling are less frustrating than the problems that you can't change like a bad internet connection. I am not that good at solving computer problems, but I can solve some of the basic problems that I experience. The internet connection problems I can't change, so I guess it is great place to learn patience That is something that I really have to learn because I tend to get impatient when things don't work straight away.

You sound like me. I also like things to be done quickly and I get impatient when things don't work. I think that I need to learn to become more patient instead of getting angry and frustrated. It is much better to take things slowly and try to find a solution in a quiet way, but I am NOT good at that

I sort peoples computer problems out as a paying hobby so I can understand where you are coming from. [sigh] It is hard to be patient with something as dumb as a computer!
What I find fascinating about problem solving is the need to think 'outside the box' as they say and try all the angles. There is often nothing written down and certainly Windows error messages are rarely a help and often misleading.
Maybe if you could have hit the Print Scrn key and saved a picture of the receipt to memory, then pasted it into a graphics program like MS Paint, then saved as a file onto a usb memory stick and taken that up to the computer connected to the printer and printed the picture of the receipt off from there. Maybe that would have saved time? Hard to tell without all the facts.
But well done you to persevere and get the job done ..... eventually.

I hadn't thought about that, but I think that would have been a possibility. I will keep in time for next time, because I think that the problems with the internet connection will continue at least when I try to use the internet upstairs I was really happy last night when I finally managed to print the receipt, I thought that it was going to take 10 minutes, but I was wrong

I'm very patient especially when kicking it. Just kidding
But I am pretty patient with problems because to me their like a puzzle. I'm always curious to find out WHY their was a problem and what caused it. So most times their fun for me. I'm weird I know :)

I think that is a great attitude, I could learn something from that. I am much too impatient and I just get annoyed when things don't work. When I couldn't print that receipt I tried different things like carrying the printer downstairs, but that was no success and eventually I decided to use the computer upstairs and simple spend as much time as I had to. I read the newspaper and solved some sudokus while I was waiting for the computer and eventually I managed to print the receipt. Next time I will try to handle things more calmly instead of getting angry and impatient.

Well most of the time when my computer goes out of control, i loose my anger and suddenly jump into one conclusion or the other. It is because they tend to strike when i am busy doing my assignments or some tasks on my PC.

Hi- As I have told you once before that i am using a fast connection so there is not much problems most of the times but yes it makes me mad once it gets slower because I am not used to it. My normal speed is 1Gb and as soon as goes lower than that it creates irritation for me. thanks for a nice one. Cheers.

Yes, I remember that we talked about that in another discussion. I also find a low speed irritating. In our house it is almost impossible to use the internet upstairs. Everything takes so much longer, the pages don't load and I often have to start over because I lose the internet connection completely. I have started reading upstairs in front of the computer. I get to too frustrated or impatient if I just stare at the slow computer, so I prefer to do something while I am waiting.

Yes, still patient even I always do things on rush, and I experienced problem in my computer. I always try and try on how I can solve the problem instead of doing nothing or complaining on what's happening. I just won't let myself carried away so I can still solve the problem and continue doing important things on my computer. When my computer is slow I usually gave it a time to scan, clean some files, back up and many other things to help it become faster again.

It sounds like you are much more patient than I am I think that I could learn something from you, because I tend to get impatient when I experience computer problems. When I started this discussions I experienced some problems with my printer and it took me several hours to print out a receipt. I got frustrated because nothing seemed to work, but next time a similar thing happens I will try to handle the situation in a better and simply try to solve the problems. I hope that I can learn to control my temper

I do get very frustrated when something comes up, but usually I do not have problems because I havve been using computers since a young age. I clear out unnecessary files and avoid downloading odd programs, so haven't really had problems with computers in a while.

That is great. I started using computers when I was in my early 20's, but I am not that great at solving computer problems. I can use the internet without problems, write, edit pictures and those things, but when something isn't working I am not very good at finding the problem or solving it. I often ask a relative or a friend for advice when something isn't working, but late at night I am unable to call them so I have to find or try to find my own answers to the problems that I experience.

My laptop is getting slower and slower as the days pass. It is old already. It has been with me for almost four years. My friend said that this is natural for laptops and I have to sell it so I could buy a new one. I do not really feel like selling it though. Usually, people who buy second hand goods want it at a really cheap price. So, I still stick to my laptop. I try to be patient with it :) Sometimes, it takes too long to open so I restart it. Happy mylotting.
