i have been having a problem with 1 of my teeth for the past couple of weeks and every time i just take a lot of ibuprophen and the swelling will go down and it would no longer hurt. well last night/today nothing is working. the ibuprophen isnt even helping. my whole face hurts. it was hurting so bad earlier that i started to take it out on my kids and that wasnt fair to them so i got them doing something they enjoyed so i could concentrate on my mouth for a little while. well i think i took to much medicine because it had stopped hurting until i got sick and then it started to hurt really really bad. so bad that i can barely stand it now. 1 kid is asleep and the other is on her way so that is a good thing and it helps me out a lot. my husband is out of town tonight so i am alone. my grandma is so sweet she sent the lasy there with her to the store to get me more ibuprophen and mouth wash and tooth paste and some oragel to try that. it is getting late but she is still going to bring it to me. she is soooo awesome. my mom said that she would take the kids in the morning even with daddy in pain and of they get to bad she said shed take them to the park for a little while until i can get done with the dentist adn all that is IF they can see me tomorrow. god i hope they can. i cant take much more of this. it hurts so bad i am in tears and i was hoping getting my mind off of it would help so i ended up here on mylot....
when you have a toothache what do you do to ease the pain??
any suggestions??
i usually so cold water because it does help but i am getting water logged its been going on for 2 days...

Sounds like an abscess to me. I had one a while back with similar problems. Especially with swelling. Get it checked out ASAP as an abscess can be pretty dangerous to your health especially if it bursts. Problem is not much worked for me in the regards of pain relief due to my abscess pushing down hard on the nerves. One thing that worked for me (somewhat surprising) was rubbing ice between my thumb and finger (that 'web like' part of the skin joint) of the OPPOSITE hand. So if your left side of the mouth is the problem side try it on the right. Something to do with nerves I believe off the top of my head but it worked for me great. Cold but yet not freezing cold water (even luke warm water) swished around in my mouth for a few seconds - a minute also helped me. Just bring a bucket ..

Well it sucks I know that much and your issues match an abscess I had. Even the water over the tooth part of the relief. If their is swelling in the gum today you definitely need to get in to a dentist today. As I said previously if an abscess bursts it can be very dangerous to your overall health. If you let it go on for too long also it will 'drop' into your cheek quite possibly causing one half of your face to swell badly.
Good luck today, I hope you get in and seen by a dentist. Feel better soon

yes it does suck. it was hurting so bad that i was actually getting sick. now i have not ate for 2 days because i know itll hurt to bad and also i couldnt holdit down. my mom said shed watch the kids so i could go and most of them were closed for the holiday and would reopen on monday the other few that were open today do not accept the kind of insurance that i have. so now i am stuck dealing with this until monday. i have been calling my dentists number that he leaves on the voicemail for his paitients in case there is an emergency and he isnt callingm back. my cheeck hurt to the slightest touch/movement my husband said he can see where my face is swollen and he can hear it in my voice. the gums are even swollen really bad.
thank you for the concern and i will keep calling tomorrow but someone i know had some extra antibiotics from dental stuff that they didnt take and they gave them to me to help with the infection since i cant get a hold of anyone to do anything about it.

that may be the problem i have i just know that it hurts real bad and i keep getting sick and i am not sure why that is. i havent been able to go because my husband has been working everyday and i have no one to watch my kids but i did find a way to go tomorrow if they will take me so i will be up 1st thing in the morning to call them and if i can ill be taking my kids to my momma until they fix this. i just have this feeling they will send me home with antibiotics and then they make an appointment to fix it and i really truely need it fixed now. simple tasks are becoming 10 times harder to do tonight.
i will be trying that ice between my fingers here shortly. it may sound weird but at this point i will try anything. all it can do is make it better or not help at all.
when i put water over the tooth it only helps unti i swallow the water. that is why i am so water logged. i am starting to spit it out now. my grandma thinks that may be why i am getting sick because i have drank a lot of water today.

I had an abscess on one tooth and it worked for me. I rinsed with it 3-4 times a day with the solution. You can feel it foam up in your mouth so start with a smaller amount than you think you need, you can always add more.
To be honest I have not been to a dentist in 30 years. I used that solution years ago when I had the abscess and that obviated the need to go. I use a name brand mouthwash twice a day that claims to kill germs and reduce tartar build up and strengthen gums. I would have to say it works.

I think having a toothache is one of the worst pain to experience because you could hardly think or do anything. I usually just try to sleep because I can't find a good remedy for it. I usually take Mefenamic acid for the pain, but that doesn't really help all the time. It is nice to know, however that your family is willing to help you through this and I do hope it gets all better soon. I know how awful you must be feeling right now, so I just pray that whatever remedy you decide to take kicks in fast and that you have a good night rest.

i agree. this pain was so bad i was having a hard time taking care of my own kids and my husband was out of town with work. i am unable to sleep because i have kids but even last night it hurt so bad i was barely able to get any sleep. so today i was exhausted and unable to find a dentist open today due to the holiday that would accept my issurance. my husband is home now and has just let me be alone to relax and i was given some sntibiotics by someone that had them for dental work recently but never took them all so that way the swelling can go down because it is getting bad and i cant get a hold of anyone to help me so i have to deal until atleast monday. thank you for the prayers because this is just horrible and monday is so far away.
