Rumors about you...

I just hate it when someone talks about unverified information about other people. Just yesterday my neighbor asked me if we're moving to the city. Of course, I told her that we're not. She said that she heard from another neighbor that we're moving because my husband got a better job in the city. Crazy. I don't know where they got the news. Good thing that the rumor is quite positive. But I wonder, what if it was a negative one. Oh my, I just can't imagine. Has someone ever spread a rumor about you? How did you react to it?

I found out some people at work thought I had ADHD or some such. I wasn't really offended, just curious, and set them straight.

@rohvannyn. I am quite curious. Who in the world thought that and why?? Who is qualified to make such a conjecture?

@sallypup A well meaning coworker. Not sure why - observation of behavior, I guess. Either way, it wasn't that big of an issue after I set him straight - he apologized.

@Rohvannyn So you had an excess of energy? You were a squirrel in a squirrel cage?

I hate rumors! I always make sure I know the story before I say something about it. My hubby and I have a male friend that we have both known for 15 years and he is my best friend. When my hubby was deployed people would see me and my friend out drinking and say I was cheating on my hubby. They all saw all 3 of us out when he was home so what is the big deal going out with just my friend! He was my strength when my hubby was overseas. A lot of people when he came home told him your wife was out a lot with that guy. And he'd say I know she told me and I trust her :) Love my hubby

Hello jsae29! Rumors can be damaging and they can hurt our self-esteem to a great extent. They give you hardly any chance to fight back or at least to explain your side. It's sad that there are people who survive by spreading rumors around. Most rumors out there appear to be believable and that is why they spread. People retell these stories that they believe themselves. I have experienced being the subject of gossips. It's not easy. It's but normal that initial reactions cause us to be angry, defensive and even counterattack. But I know that this way of responding to the rumors oftentimes make matters worse. Most of the time, I just stay calm and let the rumor run its course. Fanning the fire won't help. Constructive responses, based on my own experience, are more effective than becoming defensive, irate or depressed. In your case, just like what you have said, is positive so there is really no need to worry.
