Australia did not win the two AFC Asian Cups they played in. They were expected to be strong challengers but only got in the quarter final stage in 2007 and was runners up in 2011. With the 2015 edition to be held in their home soil, Australia stands a chance to win it but they still have to go pass the likes of Japan, South Korea, Iran, and North Korea. They played very well in the 2006 FIFA World Cup when they reached the quarter final stage, only to lose to Italy 0-1.

The current Australian squad is a bit old. Mark Schwarzer the ever reliable goalkeeper is 39. Lucas Neill the captain and defender is 34. Harry Kewell is 33 and Tim Cahill, 32. They are the main and better known players of the team. They have served Australia well but they are not getting any younger. New players will be called up to replace them gradually but how would they perform is still a big question mark.
