When I was in high school, I joined an outreach program organized by our school. We went to a less-fortunate community to give the people some canned goods and old clothes. In one area, I noticed that there was a house being constructed. So I asked a person who owns the house and how can they afford to build a house. She told me that the house is own by family who earns by collecting recyclable materials on the street. And I was told that the family did not spend much on their house because the people in the community contributed materials and some volunteered to help build the house. I was so surprised with what the person told me. People who do not have enough to spend for their own living are giving to people who has no connection to them. I came to realize that often times poor people are more generous than rich people. Why do you think it's the case? Why are poor people in many cases more generous than rich people?

I think a lot of times it is because poor people know what it is like to be in the situations. They have been there and done that.

Hi Thoroughrob, I think you pretty much summed it up in a nutshell. I notice that at yardsales, poorer people tend to sell their stuff so much cheaper than the wealthier ones. I think they just don't even really know that their prices are so much higher than the others. Their stuff is more expensive to begin with and so their prices are probably actually in accordance with their worth??

I think they are more appreciative of those that help them when they are in need so they want to help others to return the favor. The little things mean a lot to them. Sometimes people with a lot of money forget how fortunate they are and don't stop to think of helping others

I agree. Sometimes, they give because of experience of giving to because they are expecting something in rerun. I guess it depends on eth experience. If people feel that they wish to contribute even not by monetary means, they will still give whatever they ca – time or labor would often suffice. It’s not really the matter of money but the thought. Some rich people only give because they feel that it would lessen the taxes imposed on them while others are really charitable. It depends o the person who gives it.

You are right many middle class persons or poor persons are more generous than rich person. Some time rich persons loves their money and middle class persons always ready for paying their money to charity. Poor persons nature is good but some rich persons nature is also not good.

There are many reasons why people become generous to other people. Back in college i have a friend who have a rich father, but i see him as generous person too. He often donate either money or stuff that he no longer use to other people, so i think not all rich people are jerks. On the other hand, not all poor people are genuine when they contributing something to other people. I see that some people want other people to know that they are generous, while other people want to mock you when you're not there. The second one happen to me. I got helped by someone who at first i think it was a genuine gesture, while later on i find out that he mocking me behind my back. Some people help other people with hope that one day if he's in a situation, he can ask help from the people they helped. The problem is when at the time they needed our help is the time when we're unable to help, then they often make us feel like ungrateful person.

I think that poor people know better what it means to be in need, and that is why they are more generous. They tend to share even the smallest things, because they think more about the others, instead of thinking about themselves. And that is a good thing, because it is pretty hard to find generous people nowadays.

Because the knew how it is to have nothing. They know how it feels to almost beg for food just to live. Poor people know better than rich people on how to live a happy satisfied life. Though there are two kinds of poor people as for me: those who challenge themselves and strive harder and those who just waited for for the generosity of others and is satisfied of being poor. Actually the feeling is indescribable when a poor person get successful. My uncle is just a messenger in a company but really worked hard and stayed in that job so that he can send his kids to school. Now... 2 of his sons are architect and the his youngest son is recently in school taking up nursing. I am so proud with my uncle. He is a really good dad! May the Lord bless him with more and good healthy life.

I think the reason behind that is because, these kind of people most likely know and experienced to have nothing. They know how it feels like compared to those rich people.

Because poor people can understand fully how does it feels being a poor. Rich people only feel empathy and sympathize the poor. Rich people can give donations and help to poor people, but they never knew the real feeling how hard it is to be a poor one. Therefore, poor people can easily relate with poor ones because they know how hard it is.

Not all rich people are not generous. but , I guess some people who are not rich and give some of what they have is because they understand more what is being poor and more in need. I guess we have to give always from what we have not what is left. Do you understand? we have to have a plate of food for this person not give her the leftovers. I like this topic , is about sharing and I love sharing.
