Hi myLotters, look like I'm in a tough situation right now. Currently I am working in a company, which I love my job, happy with my pay and the working environment is great, plus I am sure that I can grow in the organization. Yet, my parents have been asking me to join family business, helping and running the business they doing. My feelings mixed up, I don't know what to do. I do understand that my parents are getting old and it's kind of an obligation for me to take over the business.
Dear myLotters, please help: any advice or suggestion?

I might sound cruel here but I think you should explain to your family that you want to continue to your job outside the family business. I know that you will be a helpful hand in the business but you also need to experience working with strangers or others that are not part of your family. Working for family is sometimes great and usually not bad. However, there might be times when something personal might affect the running of the family business. Tell your family that you wished to experience something outside of the family business. You can assure them that you will always consider working or the family but not at this moment. Also, you can learn things about your family business without actually participating on it (like how it can be run from an outsider’s point of view). Try to make the business a little les personal. Your family might to own the business but it can lead it to its ruin.

Do you have any siblings or cousins that might be interested in taking care of the business? Not completely, but as a partner. At least you still have a stake in the business. If you are an only child, it might seems sensible for your parents for you to take care of the business, however, you can always participate in the business even if you are working for another one. It will be tough and you will have trust issues, but if you ca make it work at the same time, you ca benefit from two avenues.

You are the best judge lucas because you know the actual position of both works comparatively besides the money aspects and not to forget the future. If you think money is not an important factor but being with parents is, I would suggest you to atay with your family because that is more important. cheers.
