all of my husbands family basically lives in New York and most of mine live down here. he would love to move back up there it has been over 10 years since he went up there to see them. i have considered this more than once but i have lived here all my life and i know nothing else. it would be a nice change and from what i undertand it is a lot diffrent up there than here. i wouldnt until i no longer have the responsibilities that i have now but at the same time i would be moving so far away and wouldnt be able to just call someone up for help that i already know because i would be tp far away but it would be a great way to start over fresh and new.
have you ever moved from somewhere you knew all about to an unknown place? how well did you adapt?

Hi crazzydolphin,
I am "up here" in the north right now, and I can't wait to get out of here. I plan on moving south, even farther south than North Carolina as soon as possible.
We have winter up here and it gets cold; some days the high temperature is in the teens or single digits, before windchill. The traffic is horrible, the roads are horrible as well. When I visit my family that moved to Florida, there are no potholes, and you don't have to plan what time you are leaving for somewhere to avoid traffic. The solution to every traffic problem here seems to be put up red lights; I have to travel through 5 of them just to go 2.5 miles to a shopping center. There are 3 in the 6 miles to the local shopping center that my family uses in Florida. Fuel is about $0.20 cheaper on average there too. My parents bought a new car in Florida, it has over 28,000 miles on it, still has it's original tires/brakes/exhaust at 3 years old. I drive about 5000 miles/year, and I have used 1 set of brakes due to wear and corrosion pitting, and 2 mufflers and tailpipes because they rust out due to road salt usage.
The other poster who mentioned that it costs more to live up here is definitely correct, the cost of living is higher, and you have to fix many things due to exposure to elements. Sure you get hurricanes down there, but they are sporadic and give you enough warning when they do come that you can get out of their way. We get tornados, and you have mere minutes to seek shelter when they touch down.
Will I adapt to life in the south, you darn right I will, and if I ever falter, I'll just remind myself what I left behind.

I do think you get paid a bit higher up here, so even though the cost of living is higher, it seems to work out in the end. As to if you would like it here you just might; I know people that have moved south only to move back up here in a relatively short time because they liked it here better. Certain things just appeal to different people.
The education system for example is rumored to be better up here, but we have no children so that is not a concern. And with my family in Florida I am there all the time, and I stay at their house so the vacation resembles home life more than if I stayed at a hotel or resort. There are benefits and drawbacks to anywhere that you choose to live, it;s just that the benefits in the south outweigh any potential drawbacks, for me anyway.

i am not sure if i would like it but we are spose to be saving for a trip up there and i am sure by doing this i will have a better idea on if i like it because i have never really been any where excpet on vacations but that was always to florida or georgia so i have never really got the chance to go up north except to my cousin is missouri.
i have 2 kids so education is important to me but i also want something that we will all enjoy. i am not sure which will weigh out to be more for me i guess i wont know until the time actually gets here but it isnt a bad idea to think about.

my husband told me about the winters up there. here where i live if we get ice the schools are delayed. if there are a few flakes sticking to the ground they usually close the schools. from what he said up there they go to school no matter what. we are not prepared for snow here. i love the cold weather so that wouldnt bother me all that much lol.
wow there are a lot of diffrences between here and there...it would take a lot to get use to it.
we had 1 tornado here a while back but it isnt something we worry about all the time. i didnt like that at all.
my grandma told me that now isnt the best time for us to move there and i dont plan on it any time soon but t may be in my future. cost of living i know is higher but while working you also get paid a higher rate (i think donth hold me to that but that is what i was told) to accomdate the higher prices.
sounds like i will not like it up there that much but i guess i will adapt some how if that is what we end up deciding to do.

Too funny, I moved from New York to North Carolina. At first I did not want to move here because of my friends and family were up there. It was tough but once I gave it a chance I started to like it here. Now I miss NY still but I like it here and I am okay with being here.
There are many differences between the two. NY is very fast paced in most places, traffic is horrible there, things are much more expensive there, the education system is better in NY, and of course the ACCENT is completely different, Lol.
I miss NY a lot, if I could afford it up there I would move back. But sadly there is no way I will have that kind of money.
I hope if you do move there that you will adapt quickly. And I hope you like it as much as I always did. =)

that is pretty funny. my husband, his mom, and his older brother moved down here from new york. my husband said that a lot of people have been doing that.
i did hear that the education system was way better than they are here. and yes the accents are WAY diffrent lol. even tho it has been a long time since my husband lived there i can still catch his accent every once in a while. he told me ill ge made fun of when i get there haha but that is ok with me. he also said after a while i will adapt to their accent in some way.
i have a question for you.....have you ever heard of down younder???
i am asking because my husband was like down where?? he had never heard of that until he moved here.
he really misses NY a lot to and that is why he hopes to move back there but he did say he wouldnt go until he found a job and he knew that we could afford it. we also do not have the money right now but we are planning to visit there within the next year to go meet his broter and his sister.
thank you i am sure i will enjoy once i get there and get use to it but it will be a few years atleast before we move there.

Many people have been moving down South, it is cheaper and in most places the people are nicer here.
My accent comes out when I am angry. My husband laughs and says oh she is angry, the NY is coming out of her! LOL.
I never heard of down yonder either until we moved here. When people first said it here I was like down where? What? Lol!
That is great that your moving there and I wish all of you the best of luck when you do move! That is good that he is waiting until he finds a job because it is expensive there. My grandma had a 1 bedroom basement apartment and she was paying $1,000 per month. It might not be that expensive in all parts of NY but where I was it was a fortune! I have a 4 bedroom 2 bath house for $700 per month here, BIG difference, Lol.
But if your husband finds a good job you should be fine. =)

i have noticed that a lot of them are moving down here. i think everyone keeps a little bit of their accent no matter what. it is just a matter of when it comes out. you can really tell it when he gets to talking to his family. i guess because theirs is so diffrent than ours.
i had to ask about the down yonder lol because it was so funny when we had that talk with him. he had never heard of it at all. i was so use to saying it that i couldnt believe he never heard of it before. but that goes to show how different each place is to live. i am sure that there are some things they say in New York that you will never hear down here in North Carolina.
i heard they are pretty expensive like that. my husband is hoping to get a job with his grandfather to help save up the money for a place up there. he said when his mom and his step-dad moved here his step-dad came down a few months ahead of her and the kids. that way he could work and save up money and then he had the money to move them all up there. he has mentioned this and its not a bad idea i would just miss him like crazzy lol. if he gets the job with his grandfather i am sure they would let us stay there while he got some money saved up. not sure this is a possibility any more but that is an option we are looking into.

I have lived in NC all of my life. At one point I really wanted to move to Ft. Walton Beach in Florida. I had a job all lined up and everything. I was very determined to move but everything for rent was so much more expensive down there than it was here. I also had 3 boys and was a single parent at the time and I knew that if I had problems I would not be able to pick up the phone and my family would be over to help out. My ex-husband was from NY and I have visited in the summer and the winter and I can honestly tell you that they would have to pay me to move up to that snow and ice up there!!! I think I will stick with the south.

hi crazzydolphin! mr. psychoartist and our princess and i have moved to minnesota from georgia about three months ago...we were excited but nervous about the change...the people here have been very nice and we love our new house and town which is like mayberry but in the north...we miss the southern food though! and our families...we talk to our families almost every day on facebook or email or phone which is great! i know at one time in history if we moved up here we would not be able to stay in touch so easily! so that is one good thing for you if your family is on line...we could even skype but we haven't done that yet...in some ways we thought of our move as an adventure and i think moving from nc to ny would also be quite an adventure!

i want to move to sort of have a fresh start on things. to start our new life together as a family and maybe make things easier for us. i think that we need change and by getting out of this area we can have all that. i am very nervous because if we do that is very far from my family but its like you said almost everyone from my famly is on facebook so that is a plus. i just know that it would hurt some of them if i moved so far away. i am sure i will miss the southern food since that is all that i have known but i think i can adapt and get past that i hear NY has some awesome food lol. it will definately be an adventure for me that is for sure.
