Are You Afraid to Return Things?

The other day I went to Wal-Mart with my garage sale money burning a hole in my purse. I decided to see if I could find a kiddie pool where I could at least cool off on these hot days. We are having triple digit weather and I am dying with no air conditioning to speak of.
Well, I found a round inflatable "family pool" that was 80 inches in diameter for under $30 so I thought 80 inches was big enough, my daughter and I should be nice and comfy in that. I bought the 80 inch round pool and put it in my car, then ran to the dollar store to pick up my daughter.
She decided that she needed to go back to Wal-Mart for something and I decided while we were there to look for a misting personal fan. Well, I'm cruising through the isles by the pools and other water stuff and found another "family pool" for three dollars less than the one I had bought...and, get this...it was actually larger. This one was 120 inches long and about 4 feet wide. Not round but oblong. So I sent my daughter out to bring in the one I had bought and we exchanged them and got my $3 back!
Now, I know there are some folks who would have just shrugged off that extra $3 and not wanted to deal with returning the one they bought. I was like that once, myself, and know what it's like to feel that way. You're embarrassed to return something you bought for something better unless the thing you bought is defective. Sometimes even if something is defective we are reluctant to return it for whatever reason.
Do you advocate for yourself in these situations or just let it slide and swallow the frustration? It took me a long time to become assertive enough to insist on getting what I paid for. In restaurants, for example, if your order isn't quite right, do you insist they fix it or just eat their mistake? How far do you go when you are dissatisfied with a product or service?

I would have retuned the pool too - especially if it was just in the car. My husband likes to give me a hard time about taking my time, looking around, and price checking. This situation is exactly why I do that no one should be embarrassed about returning items. It's your money, you spent and you should always be satisfied with our purchases.

I find that a lot depends on the situation. It's easier to return something to a brick and mortar store than to mail it back, especially if I have to pay the postage. Still, I have to admit that I have gotten bolder in my old age.

Very true. I still hate returning things though. I just returned 2 items through the mail, that was actually easier than going back to the store lol

Yeah, some mail order stores will even pay the return postage. I know Amazon does which is why I frequent them more often than not.

I don't have a problem at all returning something. When asked if there was anything wrong with it, I just tell them that I realized it wasn't what I was looking for or whatever. If there is something wrong with it then I really have no problem returning it unless it was something so inexpensive as to not be worth the hassle.
As for returning food in a restaurant, it all depends. I try not to complain much. I know they work hard and if it's not terrible then I'll just deal with it. I'm not overly fussy with my food anyway. I have sent a steak back to be cooked a bit more before but if they brought me fries instead of mashed potatoes or the wrong vegetable or something minor like that then I wouldn't say anything.

I agree with you on Olive Garden! I have been in there about 3 times and honestly, I don't understand the hype. I really did not think they were that great at all.
Oh and those tips added in...!! I hate that we, the public, are literally paying the employees of these places anyway. The people that own these places get away with having to pay very little on their payroll and the waitresses rely on us for tips. I always feel so bad that unless they are extremely rude, I tip.

Having been a waitress I know how important those tips are but I also think that the matter of to tip or not and how much is between me and the wait staff, not the proprietor! If I have good service I will leave a generous tip...up to 30%. But poor service will get little or no tip from me and that is as it should be. That is exactly the purpose of the tip, to encourage good service from the wait staff. When the employer adds it in to the total bill, it becomes a surcharge, not a tip.

i would take it back for sure. we need to watch every penny so i have no problem doing stuff like that. we recently bought a piece of metal that my hubby thought he needed to fix our screen door, but turns out that he didn't need and rather than keeping it, i got him to take i back. it was $14 bucks that would have been just sitting around in a useless piece of metal.

I hear you. I can't tell you how many construction items I found in my shed when I bought this place. Some of it I could use but most of it I just gave to my handyman. Too bad I couldn't have sold it all.
I also have a couple of railing braces that I bought years back, still in the packages they came in. Wish I had returned them at the time. Now I try to sell them at yard sales but no one buys them.

I am with you, return, return, return! There was nothing wrong with returning it for the better deal. I don't blame you one bit. Good deals are hard to come by these days and if you can get a better one go for it. I don't think I have ever had any problems about returning something that I did not find lived up to my expectations. I do hope that you will enjoy that pool.

Yes, I know what you mean. Personally, shopping is a real chore for me so I often want to get in and out of the store as quickly as possible. It's just too physically taxing on me, even with a motorized shopping cart. But when I can, I will get the best deal there is. I was thrilled to be able to exchange the pool and the one we got is awesome as far as the size goes. Just perfect.

hi dear alaskanray, I am still learning to be confident enough to get refunds or exchange. My husband is good at this. he just got me a backpack from Aldi which was on sale and when I saw it I said, in the flyer it was blue and here it sits green which doesnt match my clothes. I mostly wear blue.......
Hubby decided to take it back and get it refunded. He was successful.
Just recently I think I made some progress. Once when I bought cherries at a street vendors place. The first time I bought them they were wonderful, almost no bad ones in the big brown bag I got me.
second time one day later another guy worked at the place and I wanted cherries again. Nothing visible there they arent in good condition so I paid and went to the station to get the train home. While I waited I decided to start eating and guess what? One good one, two bad ones to the trash, one good one, three bad ones to the trash and on it went.
Next day I went there again and complained. They first tried to say something about they were cheap in the late afternoon anyways and I then said but I dont have two Euro to throw in the trash, it ended up with me giving me the money back and bickering amongst themselves about that money back for me.
Second incident was just about two weeks ago. I went to a supermarket near work to shop for a few items, then I went to the cash register and the cashier dropped a cream cheese on the floor just put it back to my purchases. I refused to accept that cause it could have a minor tear he wouldnt see immediately. He first had said he gets me a new one, then said its not damaged and I wont get a new one. I said I refuse accepting this as moments ago he had said he gets me a new one and now refuses claiming he has no time with only two more customers following behind me. He started insulting me but by then I insisted on my money back. He tried to set pressure on me saying I never experienced anything like this in 10 years. I just looked at him and said so young man then its about time you do. Finally he handed me the money........ Success........

Good for you! It took me a long time to learn to be assertive without being aggressive. It's such a delicate balance. Thank goodness we have plenty of time in this life to learn these things, eh?
I'm glad you have such a good husband who can do what you can't, too.
